Will of Elizabeth Batten Widow of Dorchester

In the Name of God Amen:

This is the Will and Testament of me Elizabeth BATTEN of Dorchester in the County of Dorset Widow made and published this Sixth day of April in the year of our Lord One Thousand seven Hundred and Fifty Eight (hereby revoking and making void all Wills by me heretofore made) as follows:-

First I give: and devise All that my Messuage or Dwellinghouse with the appurtenances situate lying and being in the warrenship? (wardenship?) of Pimperne within the Parish of Blandford Forum in the said County of Dorset unto Robert LAMBERT of Dorchester aforesaid Gentleman his heirs and assigns for ever.

Also I give: and bequeath unto John BATTEN of Dorchester aforesaid carpenter the sum of six hundred pounds ⁽⁶⁾

Also I give: and bequeath unto Eleanor, sister of the said John Batten and now wife of John SANDERSON of London coachman to his Majesty the sum of two hundred pounds ⁽⁵⁾

Also I give: and bequeath unto my kinswoman Mary the wife of Stephen WILLIAMS, late Mary YEATMAN Spinster, the sum of one hundred pounds ⁽⁴⁾

Also I give: and bequeath unto my kinswoman Ann YEATMAN the sum of one hundred pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto my kinswoman Mrs VINCENT (late YEATMAN) of Fontmell in the said County of Dorset the sum of one hundred pounds ⁽⁷⁾

Also I give: and bequeath unto Mrs Tomazine FORD of Lyme Regis in the said County of Dorset widow, formerly Thomazine PURCHASE spinster the sum of one fifty pounds ⁽³⁾

Also I give: and bequeath unto Robert STICKLAND son of Nathaniel STICKLAND of Dorchester aforesaid Gentleman the sum of Fifty pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto John TEMPLEMAN son of William TEMPLEMAN late of Dorchester aforesaid gentleman deceased the sum of Fifty pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto Harry SHORTO of Dorchester aforesaid Gentleman the sum of Fifty pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto Mary TUCKER the daughter of William TUCKER late of Dorchester aforesaid Blacksmith deceased the sum of Fifty pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto Elizabeth BEAVIS the daughter of Robert BEAVIS late of Dorchester aforesaid Inn Keeper deceased the sum of Fifty pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto Edmund BOWER of Dorchester aforesaid InnKeeper the sum of Twenty pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto Thomas COOMBES of Dorchester aforesaid InnKeeper the sum of Twenty pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto James COOMBES of Dorchester aforesaid Apothecary the sum of Twenty pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto John OLDIS of Dorchester aforesaid Button Maker the sum of Twenty pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto Sarah PURCHASE Spinster the daughter of Mrs Sarah PURCHASE late of Dorchester aforesaid widow deceased the sum of Twenty pounds

Also : it is my Will and I do hereby direct that me Executrix herein after named do distribute the sum of Five pounds as soon as conveiniently she can after my decease to and amongst such poor inhabitants of the Parish of All Saints in the Town of Dorchester aforesaid as are not relieved by the said Parish to the best of her

Also I give: and bequeath unto my Cousin John YEATMAN of Sturminster Newton castle in the said County of Dorset woolstapler the sum of one hundred pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto my Cousin [Blank space] daughter of my late Cousin Joan BANGER late of Charminster in the said County of Dorset widow deceased, and now the wife of Hugh FREEMAN shepherd to Mr Thomas NICHOLLS of Burton within the said parish of Charminster in the said County of Dorset the sum of Twenty pounds and to Elizabeth her daughter the sum of Ten pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto Martha the wife of the said Nathaniel STICKLAND , my late servant the sum of Fifty pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto Martha the daughter of the Reverend GUPPY of Winterbourne Saint Martin in the said County of Dorset the sum of Twenty Pounds

Also I give: unto Agnes SEWARD of Dorchester aforesaid widow Also I give: unto Elizabeth THORNTON of the same place widow and Also I give unto Mary GUPPY spinster (one other of the daughters of the said Mr GUPPY and to each of them a ring of Five pounds value to be delivered to them the said Agnes SEWARD, Elizabeth THORNTON and Mary GUPPY respectively within one month next after my decease

Also I give: and bequeath unto John BANGER son of the above named Joan BANGER the sum of Ten pounds

Also I give: and bequeath unto Elizabeth MEADWAY my servant the sum of twenty pounds

And to this my Will I do make the said Eleanor LAMBERT Sole Executrix

Thomas by due providence Archbishop of Canterbury primate of all England and Metropolitan Joan well beloved in Christ, The Reverend John HUBBOCK and John COLESON Nathaniel TEMPLEMAN and Richard TEMPLEMAN Clerke in the County of DorsetGreeting Whereas Elizabeth BATTEN late of Dorchester in the county of Dorset Widow deceased having whilst living and at the time of her death goods chattles and credits in divers diocesee or Jurisdictions sufficient to found the jurisdiction of our Perogative Court of canterbury did make her last Will hereunto annexed and did dispose in name Eleanor LAMBERT (wife of Robert LAMBERT) sole executrix. and afterwards died. We do therefore empower you jointly severally to swear the said executive as well of the truth of the said Will as of faithful performance thereof and to make a true and perfect inventory of all and singular the goods chattles and credits of the deceased, and to render a just and true account thereof and to exhit the same into the Registry of our said Prereogative Court of Canterbury and you are hereby joined further to do in the premises as shall be needful, and that (such oath being administered) you duly transmit to the Commisary of our said Court or his surrogate the said Will and all our proceedings thereon subcribed with the papers hand writing of onen or more of you on or befor ethe last day of September next ensuing, together with these presents Provided nevertheless that this Commission shall be of no effect unless so transmitted before the said time. Given at London the Twelfth day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and sixty One and in the third year of our translation

Letter of Administration 1776: ⁽²⁾

Know all men by these presents that we Robert LAMBERT of Dorchester in the County of Dorset Gentleman; and Thomas BRYER of the same place Gentleman held and firmly bound unto John Walker Clerk Master of Arts Archdeacon of the Archdeaconry of Dorset lawfully constituted in the sum of Two Hundred Pounds of good and lawful money of Great Britain to be paid to the said John Walker or his certain attorney his executors administrators or assigns to make which payment well and truley We bind ourselves and each of us bu himself our and each of our heirs executors and administrators firmly by these presents sealed with our seals Dated the [Blank] day of [Blank] in the year of our Lord One thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Six

The condition of this obligation is such that if the above bound Robert LAMBERT Administrator of all and singular the goods chattles and credits of Elizabeth BATTEN late of Dorchester in the Archdeaconry of Dorset aforesaid Widow deceased which was last administered by Elianor LAMBERT the late executrix named in the last Will and Testament of the said deceased and since also deceased, do make or cause to be made a true and perfect Inventory of all and singular the goods chattles and credits of the said deceased unadministered as aforesaid which have or shall come to the hands possession or knowledge of the said Robert LAMBERT or into the hands or possession of other person or persons for him and the same so made do exhibit or cause to be exhibited into the Registry of the Archdeaconry of Dorset aforesaid at or before the last day of November next ensuing and the same goods chattles and credits do well and truly administer that is to say do pay the debts which the said deceased did owe at the time of her death and the the legacies contained in the said Will annexed to the said Letter of Administration so to him committed as far as the goods chattles and credits of the said Elizabeth Batten deceased unadministered as aforesaid will thereunto extend and the law charge him And further do make or cause to be made a true or just account of his said administration when he shall thereunto be lawfully required Then this obligation to be void and of non effect or else to remain in full force and virtue

(1). Elizabeth BATTEN was buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 20 Feb 1761

(2). Eleanor the wife of Mr Robert LAMBERT was buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 2nd May 1776

(3). James FORDE and Tamisan PURCHAS [i.e. Thomazine PURCHASE] of Lyme were married on 15th Feb 1747/8 at St Michaels church in Lyme Regis

(4). Mary YEATMAN married Stephen WILLIAMS at St Marys Church Sturminster Newton on 29th April 1746

(5). A Mr John SANDERSON of Saram & Mrs Elner BATEY (Sic) of Dorchester were married at St Georges church Fordington on 15th Oct 1726

(6). Mr John BATTEN and Elizabeth GREY both of Dorchester were married at St Peters Church Dorchester on 27 Nov 1725

(7). An Elizabeth YEATMAN married a Joseph VINCENT at Sturminster Newton on 27th April 1747
