Nov 19 - Commenced keeping the Log Book today.

Not a very full school this week. Rev C. MAYO present at the opening of the school. Children on the whole very good.

Nov 20 - Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES visited the school this afternoon and examined the girls’ needlework, and heard the children sing.

Nov 22 - School has been opened every morning this week by the Rev C.H. MAYO. Children on the whole pretty good, had to punish a few for coming late.

Nov 29 - Admitted four children this week.

Dec 6 - Gave notice that there would be a week’s holiday occasioned by my having to go to Salisbury for the Certificate examination.

Dec 16 - Broke up on Friday for the customary Christmas holiday.

Jan 6 - Had to punish a boy for playing truant because he couldn’t say his gospel.

Jan 13 - Mr MAYO measured on Wednesday forthe new curtains ordered by Mr TRYARTHEN. Later in the morning Mr MAYO brought two ladies ? the school. They examined the needlework. Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES visited the school on Friday morning. Mr MAYO was present at the same time.

Jan 23 - Girls beenbusy making the new curtains in the afternoons this week. Had occasion to punish the infants on Wednesday for being noisy; which I did by keeping them in for a quarter of an hour after the elder ones were dismissed.

Jan 31 - … on Thursday and Friday owing tothe snow the attendance was not so good. S. CURTIS asked to leave the school at11 o’clock on Tuesday to assist her mother in washing.

Feb 7 - School not nearly so well attendedthis week owing to the snowstorms.

Feb 14 - Mr MAYO has been taking the 1^st Class to Geography this week. Several times girls not nearly so attentive as they ought to have been.

Feb 22 - The new curtains were put up on Tuesday, it seems to be much more convenient with them.

Feb 28 - Very severe snowstorms on Monday and Tuesday. Hannah BALSOME absent this week, also Julia WHITTAKER from the 1^st Class.

Mar 7 - Had to punish Sarah CURTIS for disobedience on Monday afternoon. Mr MAYO as usual has paid us a visit each day of this week.

Mar 14 - Lydia CURTIS was very tiresome on Thursday morning.

Mar 21 - On Monday last Mr MAYO gave the children a half-holiday in consequence of a very disagreeable smell that came from Mr SAMPSON’s; on the whole the children have been pretty good this week.

Mar 28 - I admitted two fresh children on Monday last and on Tuesday another little girl. Had to punish ?Tom ?DOWN for impertinence on Friday afternoon.

Apr 4 - Admitted a little boy on Monday morning. Bessie YOUNG asked for leave on Tuesday which I gave her.

Apr 11 - Robert and Kate COOMBS admitted on Monday morning. The 2^nd and 3^rd Classes did their Arithmetic badly on Wednesday. Kept both classes in to do their work after school.

Apr 18 - Bessie WHITTAKER and Annie PERRISdid their sums so badly in the morning of Wednesday that they were kept in to do the same after school. John RIDOUT also kept in to write his Dictation five times for writing the same so imperfectly in the morning lessons. On Thursday the children had a school feast.

Apr 25 - Sarah CURTIS asked to go out at 11 o’clock on Wednesday. John CHIPP absent on Friday morning, also Hannah BALSOME. Admitted a little boy from Holnest on Monday morning.

May 9 - On Monday being a wet day there were very few children present. Sarah CURTIS asked on Tuesday to assist her mother in washing. Miss COSENS and two other ladies paid us a visit on Thursday afternoon, they examined the needlework. Julia WHITTAKER is returned to school this week after being absent nearly three months. John and Sarah CHIPP absent potato planting.

May 16 - There have been several children absent this week with the chicken-pox. A gentle-man came in to see us on Wednesday accompanied by Mr MAYO. Sarah J. WHITTAKER was absent on Wednesday and Thursday sick. Fanny DOWN also absent on Friday sick.

May 23 - Julia WHITTAKER and Hannah BALSOME have both been absent all the week.

May 30 - Hannah BALSOME again absent from school this week. Admitted John and Charles LOCK on Monday.

Jun 13 - Admitted two fresh children on Monday both under three years of age.

Jun 27 - Fanny DOWN was kept in to do her sums on Tuesday and again on Friday. She seems to be very stupid over them. [Attendance] not so good as last week owing to the hay-making having begun.

Jul 4 - Several children again absent thisweek owing to the hay-making.

Jul 11 - Lydia CURTIS absent this week being sick. Gave Bessie YOUNG a half-holiday on Monday to go to Sherborne.

Jul 18 - Mr MAYO gave us a holiday on Tuesday. All four of the GILLINGHAMs absent this week also Thomas DEACON. Miss COSENS and two other ladies paid us a visit on Friday afternoon. [This seems to happen quite regularly.]

Jul 25 - Lydia CURTIS absent on Tuesday to go to Weymouth to see the doctor. Thomas DOWN absent this week.

Aug 1 - Had to punish William PERRIS on Tuesday for playing truant on Monday afternoon. Thomas DOWN absent this week bird keeping. Average this week 50.7.

Aug 8 - John CHIPP absent this week to assist Mr SAMPSON to finish hay-making.

Aug 17 - several children absent this week. Had to punish Chas GILLINGHAM on Tuesday for playing truant on Monday which I did by keeping him in the whole of the dinner hour. Both Harry RIDOUT and George PERRIS have been very tiresome all the week. We break up this afternoon (Friday) for the harvest holidays of three weeks.

Sep 12 - B. GILLINGHAM obliged to stay at home all the week to have her shoes mended. Admitted a little girl on Monday.

Oct 3 - On Monday the bad readers read extra while the girls engaged in their needlework.

Oct 10 - Needlework being very backward was forced to let the girls work at it Friday morning.

Oct 17 - The attendance has not been so well this week owing to the Fair held in Sherborne. … On Friday morning Sarah PERROTT and Dorcas YOUNG’s arithmetic being bad kept them in to do the same after school. Gave Arthur YOUNG and William PERRIS permission to wash ink-wells and point pencils at 4.15 on Friday afternoon.

Oct 24 - The school was inspected on Monday morning by Mr MORGAN. Sarah and Emily CHIPP and Fanny DOWN had a punishment lesson on Friday morning for talking. Thomas DOWN asked for and obtained permission to go rabbiting on Friday afternoon. Averagethis week 54.6.

Oct 31 - Gave monitor a half holiday on Monday to go to Sherborne. S. CHIPP absent on Thursday morning to go to Sherborne to meet her cousin. Punished J. RIDOUT for deceit on Friday.

Nov 7 - Admitted a fresh girl on Monday.

Summary of H.M. Inspector’s Report, received Nov 1873:

‘The school is in good order and well taught.’

A Ball-frame and a box of form and colour appear to be required for the infants.

Nov 14 - It being a very wet day on Monday several children were absent. John CHIPP has returned to school again this week, having been absent since Oct 20^th. Admitted four boys on Monday morning. Average not so goodthis week as the measels [sic] are in the parish and a few children kept at home in consequence. 42.7.

Nov 21 - The measels are still in the parish several children absent in consequence. John CHIPP asked permission to be absent on Thursday morning to go to Yetminster with the butter.

Nov 28 - Great many children absent this week owing to the measels. John CHIPP has left our school to go to Sherborne ‘to be finished off’. Tom DOWN did not bring his letter on Monday ad ordered; therefore he was kept in to do the same after school.

Dec 12 - Measels still very bad 37.9.

Dec 19 - Measels worse this week than last.

Jan 9 - Several children still absent owing to the measels. Sarah CURTIS absent this week to assist her mother. Average 34.8.

Jan 16 - Arthur YOUNG has returned to school this week after an absence of several weeks. Had occasion to punish Fanny WHITTAKER for telling an untruth on Wednesday. Measels much better this week, only the WHITTAKERs absent with them.

Jan 23 - Lydia and john CURTIS absent this week owing to severe colds. Monitor obliged to be sent home on Monday being ill. Ada YOUNG supplied her place for the day. Sarah Jane, Bessie and Emma WHITTAKER still absent not being recovered fro measels.

Jan 30 - Admitted two fresh children on Monday. Broke up on Friday for a week’s holiday on the occasionof the church being re-opened.

Feb 13 - Gave monitor a day’s holiday on Thursday to go and set about a situation. Lydia CURTIS supplied her place for the day.

Feb 20 - Gave holiday on Monday (in order that the school room might be prepared for a concert in aid of the Church) and Tuesday (in order that it might be put to rights again) owing to which the attendance has been very bad this week. Average 33.

Feb 27 - Gave Sarah PEROTT and Dorcas YOUNG an extra Arithmetic lesson on Thursday and Friday as they did their sums very badly in the morning. Allowed john RIDOUT to teach the 1^st Standard their Tables on Wednesday and Friday instead of their usual reading lesson in the afternoon. Average 51.9.

Mar 6 - Lydia CURTIS obliged to stay at home this week owing to her being ill. Sarah CURTIS and Ada YOUNG also absent on Thursday to attend the Confirmation. Sarah CHIPP and Fanny DOWN had a punishment lesson on Friday for talking.

Mar 13 - Several children absent this week having the mumps and one or two the chicken-pox. Obliged to allow monitor to stay at home on Friday as she was ill.

Mar 20 - Several children again absent this week having the mumps. Had occasion to punish R. ?COOMBS for telling a false-hood on Wednesday. Average this week 48.

Mar 27 - On Wednesday a lady from Glenwoodpaid us a visit and examined the needlework. Average 30.9.

Apr 10 - several children late on Tuesday afternoon for being which they were given a punishment lesson to learn after school. Lydia CURTIS home sick this week. A. YOUNG also absent on Wednesday morning to go hunting.

Apr 24 - No school kept on Thursday afternoon owing to a fire happening just above the school.

May 1 - Admitted 4 fresh children on Monday.

May 8 - One name added to the register this week.

Jun 4 - Several children punished for talking on Monday and Wednesday. Average for this week 54.2.

Jun 12 - Mr MAYO has visited us every morning this week.

Jun 19 - Several children punished this week for talking. School was visited on Monday by Miss COSENS [who seems to appear fairly regularly, sometimes with other ladies]. Admitted a fresh girl on Monday who was 11 yrs old and had never been to a day school before.

Jul 3 - E. SMITH sent home on Thursday afternoon to have her head cleaned. Six children kept in for being late on Friday afternoon.

Jul 10 - Monitor obliged to go home several times this week, her nose bleeding. Ada YOUNG supplied her place.

Jul 17 - Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES paid us a visit on Thursday morning.

Jul 24 - Punished a boy for telling an untruth on Friday.

Jul 31 - A strange gentleman came into the school on Thursday and asked permission to hear the 1^st Class read - which he did.

Sep 4 - children very talkative and noisy, obliged to punish several children in consequence. Gave notice on Friday that there would be no school in the afternoon as the Vicar intended giving the Sunday scholars a tea. Children seem to have forgotten a good deal in the holidays.

Sep 11 - Gave the monitor permission to be absent on Thursday afternoon to have a tooth drawn.

Sep 18 - Infants rather noisy this week, kept them in several times after the school has been over.

Oct 9 - Standard 1 being rather tiresome with their work this week, they have had several extra lessons after school time. Allowed Sarah CHIPP and Ada YOUNG to take their marking home to do some in the evenings this week.

Oct 16 - Owing to the Fair there were veryfew children present on Monday. In consequence of this Mr MAYO gave us a holiday on Tuesday.

Oct 23 - The Vicar gave a holiday on Friday.

Oct 27 - Punished F. DOWN fortalking on Wednesday afternoon. Harry RIDOUT sent home to have his hair brushed on Friday morning. Several children absent this week potato picking.

Nov 13 - Emma WHITTAKER obliged to stay athome all this week being ill.

Summary of H.M. Inspector’s Report, received November 12^th, 1874:

The school is in good order, and has passed a creditable examination.

G. PERRIS and G. GILLINGHAM, having been returned last year as over six, were disqualified by age for further examination under Article 19/B/1

Nov 25 - Such a few children being presentthis morning (Wednesday) owing to the fever being so prevalent in the parish, Mr MAYO thought it was wise to close the school until it was better.

Dec 24 - The Xmas holidays begin today. No school has been held since Nov 25^th on account of the fever still existing in the parish. There have been about 30 cases of Scarlet fever. Mistress resigned charge of the school today.

Jan 11 - I Eva STENT commenced my duties in this school on this day. Number present only 18 on account of the children who have had the fever not being allowed to return yet.

Jan 15 - Attendance very poorall the week. Average 18.

Jan 18 - Numbers rather larger this morning, opened with 27. The monitor also returned to her duties.

Jan 21 - Punished Harry RIDOUT.

Jan 22 - The boys have been exceedingly troublesome all the week.

Jan 27 - Harry RIDOUT has been exceedingly troublesome today.

Jan 28 - Allowed John RIDOUT to leave early to go to Sherborne.

Jan 29 - Gave Arthur YOUNG leave to go to Sherborne.

Feb 2 - Gave the monitor Bessie YOUNG leave to attend a funeral this afternoon.

Feb 3 - Miss WEST visited the school this afternoon and taught the children a new song.

Feb 5 - Miss WEST again visited the school.

Feb 10 - Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES visited the school this afternoon.

Feb 15 - Miss COSENS and Miss SIMMONDS visited the school this afternoon.

Feb 16 - Miss COSENS and some friends visited the school again this afternoon and heard the children sing.

Feb 17 - The boys continue exceedingly troublesome, particularly John and Harry RIDOUT.

Feb 27 - The school has been very small indeed all week owing to the weather and to many of the children having bad colds.

Mar 5 - The school has been closed this week on account of the illness of the Mistress.

Mar 12 - The school has been open this week but the children have been taught by the Revd C.H. MAYO.

Mar 15 - School was opened today with 35 children which is a larger number than has attended since the Xmas vacation.

Apr 16 - The children have this week commenced learning their poetry (Grey’s Elegy) for the Inspector.

Apr 19 - This morning taught Stan: II Compound Multiplication by three figures. John and Frederick BAULCH have given much trouble.

May 24 - Admitted 10 fresh scholars this morning. Number present 59.

May 30 - Admitted one fresh scholar.

Jun 1 - Bessie YOUNG absent from school for two hours this morning on account of her nose bleeding.

Jun 15 - Behaviour on the whole better - not so much trouble with the boys. Have had to be very strict about punctual attendance.

Jun 26 - Attendance varies from 45 to 55.

Jul 9 - Have allowed the boysto go to play once this week.

Jul 21 - Mr SAMPSON and another gentleman visited the school this morning.

Jul 24 - The school has been smaller this week owing to the bad weather.

Jul 30 - This week Miss WEST has visited the school three times and assisted in the singing. On Thursday the Sunday School Children had their treat, when the Revd C.H. MAYO took them to High Stoy.

Sep 15 - Allowed Arthur YOUNG to leave at 11.30 this morning.

Oct 8 - The Government Examination takes place on Monday. This year the school has laboured under much disadvantage owing to the fever which prevailed so long in the village.

Oct 25 - Miss COSENS and Miss GAMBLIN visited the school this afternoon and heard the children sing.

Oct 29 - The attendance on Wednesday and Thursday was very small owing to the inclemency of the weather.

Nov 5 - The attendance has been very fair this week considering how wet the weather has been.

Dec 14 - Miss GAMBLIN visited the school this afternoon and heard the children sing, and expressed herself much pleased with their improvement.

Dec 16 - The Vicar gave a holiday today that we might be able to attend the opening of Folke Church.

Dec 21 - Miss WEST just looked into the school this morning but did not stay as we were in the middle of a Grammar Lesson.

Jan 11 - Allowed Harry RIDOUT to leave early this afternoon to go to Sherborne.

Jan 13 - Miss COSENS visited the school today.

Jan 18 - Miss RHODES visited the school this morning. The first class are making very fair progress with their Arithmetic. The 1^st Standard can do Addition fairly well.

Jan 31 - Miss WEST visited the school this afternoon and gave the children a singing lesson and taught them some new songs.

Feb 1 - The Vicar took the Scripture as usual this morning and afterwards visited the school in company with Mr HIGHAM. Admitted two fresh scholars this afternoon viz: John YOUNG and Charles PITMAN.

Feb 4 - The attendance has been unusually good this week - admitted William PERRIS on Monday. Average 57.6.

Feb 22 - obliged to punish Harry RIDOUT for impertinence.

Mar 3 - Kept in A. PERRIS, E. CHIPP and S. PERROTT to learn their geography.

Mar 7 - Again obliged to keep in A. PERRISto do her lessons. Annie BARTLETT has left the school to go to service.

Mar 18 - Had occasion to punish John CURTIS for disobedience. Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES visited the school on Wednesday afternoon.

Mar 22 - Miss COSENS, Mrs COSENS and Miss RHODES visited the school this afternoon - they examined the girls’ sewing and heard the children sing - they considered them much improved in the latter. Began to teach a new Round.

Mar 23 - Miss COSENS and some friends visited the school this afternoon.

Mar 31 - Was obliged to send for Mr MAYO this afternoon on account of the bad behaviour of one of the boys named Frederick BAULCH.

Apr 28 - Numbers of the scholars has been very small all week on account of potato planting.

May 1 - Admitted a fresh scholar named Fanny YOUNG.

May 8 - Emily CHIPP absent onTuesday and Wednesday.

May 11 - Fanny YOUNG absent all the week. Jane DAVIDGE returned this week after 10 weeks absence.

May 15 - Admitted two children today Bessie and Harry HANNAM. William and Henry YOUNG returned to school. William YOUNGR17;s behaviour is bad in the extreme.

May 22 - Admitted one new pupil.

Jun 7 - The Vicar gave a holiday on account of its being Burton Club.

Jun 29 - The Vicar gave a whole holiday today and the Sunday School Scholars had their annual treat in the afternoon.

Jun 30 - Elizabeth YOUNG the monitor resigned today - she has left in consequence of having a better situation.

Jul 2 - Martha Annie HANN has been appointed in Elizabeth YOUNG’s place and has commenced her duties today. Several boys absent this week on account of the Hay-making.

Jul 10 - The Vicar kept school today as the Mistress wished to have a holiday.

Jul 14 - There has been a very poor attendance this week owing to the Haymaking and also to a number of children gone to visit the Camp.

Jul 23 - William YOUNG continues to give much trouble.

Sep 1 - Susan and George SMITH absent on account of illness.

Sep 4 - Admitted Frances Clara HANNAM this morning.

Sep 11 - John YOUNG returned to school this week after several month’s absence. George HANNand Harry RIDOUT have been particularly troublesome.

Sep 15 - Kept in George HANN and Harry RIDOUT this afternoon for bad behaviour.

Sep 18 - Admitted Henry MILESthis morning.

Oct 2 - Commenced the new registers today.

Oct 17 - The Vicar gave a holiday today on account of the Fair in Sherborne which draws away so many children from the school.

Oct 27 - Miss BURDETT/BINDETT visited the school today and was much pleased with the needlework.

Nov 13 - John CURTIS returned to school today after three weeks absence on account of illness. Sarah CHIPP absent this week.

Summary of H.M. Inspector’s Report, received Novr 14. 1876:

The school is in a fair state of general efficiency, and has passed a fair examination in the Elementary Subjects. Some of the reading was scarcely up to the mark. Needlework highly creditable.

A new set of books is required.

Miss STENT will shortly receive her certificate.

Nov 30 - B. WHITTAKER returned to school this week.

Dec 7 - The Revd C.H. WOOD, D.I., examinedthe school this afternoon and the children passed a satisfactory examination.

Dec 22 - Christmas Holidays commence today. The Mistress resigned the charge of Long Burton School today.

Jan 16 - 2 new children admitted.

Jan 17 - School opened every morning by the Rev C.H. MAYO.

Jan 19 - Mrs HOUGHTON visited the school and examined the girls’ needlework.

Jan 22 - Emily CHIPP returned to school this week. William FRANCIS and William DAVIDGE gave much trouble.

Jan 29 - Charles PITMAN returned to school.

Feb 5 - The MILES returned to school for the first time since the holidays.

Feb 7 - 3 or 4 of the younger children at home with bad colds.

Feb 8 - The Vicar had to reprove the children for improper conduct after school hours.

Feb 23 - Two fresh boys admitted viz: Walter and George JOLLIFFE.

Mar 2 - Gave the monitor a half holiday. Fanny DOWN taught her class that afternoon. Emily CHIPP absent for 2 days with Rheumatism.

Mar 11 - Punished children for coming late by giving them some spelling to learn.

Mar 12 - Allowed Harry RIDOUT to leave school at 11.30 to go to Ryewater.

Mar 16 - Mrs MARLOW and Mrs DAWKINS from Salisbury visited the school and heard the children sing.

Mar 21 - Charles LOCK admitted into the school. Edwin MILES absent all the week.

Mar 26 - Edwin MILES returned to school.

Mar 27 - William absent all week.

Mar 28 - Allowed the girls towork every afternoon to finish Mr MAYO’s work.

Apr 16 - On account of the rain only 21 children were present.

May 14 - Mr and Mrs COLLINS visited the school and gave each of the children a bun.

May ?20 - Sent William YOUNG from school for misconduct. Admitted Jessie BARTER into the school.

May 29 - Allowed Sarah PERROTT to leave school at 4 o’clock to go into Sherborne.

Jun 1 - Only 16 children present in the morning on account of the inclemency of the weather. Fanny and Judith DOWN began their examination work. The Parish Doctor vaccinated several infants in the schoolroom this afternoon. [After talking to Patrick PEAD, an expert on the history of vaccination, it appears that this vaccination would be for smallpox. A common practice of the time was to preserve cowpox from a cowpox lesion on a cow. This was in the form of dried cowpox infection on a silk thread. This thread was then cut into short lengths. A length of thread was inserted under the skin of the arm of the child, andthe insertion bound up. The child would develop a cowpox lesion. Recovery from this usually mild illness would lead to resistance to smallpox. Benjamin JESTY, of Yetminster, is believed to have been the first person to use vaccination against smallpox by cowpox in 1774.]

Jun 3 - Mr MAYO brought in a Lady and Gentleman to hear the children sing. Two boys Edwin and James MITCHELL were admitted into the school this week. The DAVIDGEs also returned.

Jun 5 - Miss COSENS and Miss COLLINS visited the school and gave the 3^rd Standard a dictation lesson.

Jun 11 - The DAVIDGEs were absent all the week.

Jun 12 - Allowed Harry RIDOUTto leave school at 4 o’clock to go into Sherborne.

Jun 14 - Reproved monitor for neglecting her duties and having such a disorderly class.

Jun 15 - Punished the infants by keeping them in after school.

Jun 19 - Punished the infants by keeping them in after school. Several of the children absent on accountof Haymaking.

Jun 27 - Gave the monitor a half holiday and allowed Susan SMITH to teach the infants.

Jun 28 - The Vicar gave a half holiday on account of it being Coronation day.

Jun 29 - Taught the Vth and III standards the way to cut out a child’s dress in the half size (in paper).

Jul 3 - Allowed Fanny DOWN and Emily CHIPP to leave school at 4 o’clock to go to Sherborne.

Jul 4 - Kept Annie PERRIS after school to work Arithmetic which ought to have been done in school time. Children continue to make ordinary progress and George HANN to give much trouble.

Jul 12 - Miss STENT visited the school.

Jul 16 - Several children absent this week haymaking.

Jul 20 - Allowed Christina BOW to leave school at 4 o’clock to go to Sherborne.

Jul 27 - Jessie BARTER still absent haymaking also the DAVIDGEs. Wednesday the Vicar gave a whole Holiday on account of it’s being St James’ Day, when the Sunday School Children had their feast on his lawn. Sent children home at 4 o’clockon Friday because I had a sick headache. Had to reprove Monitor several times this week for neglecting her duties.

Aug 3 - Miss COSENS visited the school twice this week and taught children a new song. Monitor stillvery negligent. John CURTIS, George HANN and Harry RIDOUT have given much trouble this week. Jesse BARTE still absent hay-making.= The school has broken up today for the Harvest holiday which lasts 4 weeks.

Sep 3 - Recommenced school today after Harvest Vacation. Several children absent gleaning.

Oct 3 - Miss COSENS and Miss STONE came into school at 4 o’clock and listened to the children singing.

Oct 4 - Allowed Flora FOOT to leave schoolat 3 o’clock therefore her attendance mark was cancelled. Thomas PARKS was admitted into the school on Monday. Mrs GLYN came in Friday afternoon to see the Examination needlework.

Oct 8 - Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES came in this afternoon to hear the children sing. The Vicar has been absent all the week. Allowed the First Class girls to do their examination knitting for ¾ of an hour each morning.

Oct 10 - Allowed Emily CHIPP to leave school at 3 o’clock to go to Sherbrone.

Oct 12 - Opened school at 1.30 instead of 2 as usual.

Oct 15 - several children were absent on account of the Fair in Sherborne.

Oct 16 - School inspected and children examined in the morning. In the afternoon a holiday was given by the Vicar.

Oct 17 - The Vicar gave to each child who passed in every subject a three-penny Juice as a reward.

Oct 18 - Had occasion to punish Thomas LAVER for impertinence.

Oct 22 - The numbers have been much higher this week owing to the Notices which have been sent to several parents who have been in the habit of keeping their children from school. Thomas PARKS has left school again. George HANN having passed the VI Standard has been employed several times this week in hearing the 2^nd Standard read.

Nov 1 - Allowed George HANN to leave school at 11 o’clock to go to Yetminster. The DAVIDGEs are still absent. Charles LOCK was admitted again this week. Kept all the backward children after school every day for half an hour to read and work Arithmetic.

Nov 2 : Summary of H.M. Inspector’s report:

The children have not done as well as last year.The reading still continues slovenly and there is a falling off in Arithmetic, but the Mistress will probably do better with assistance. Great attention is needed in the extra subjects. Needlework as last year is very good.

Nov 14 - Miss COSENS, Miss HIGHMORE and Miss RHODES visited the school on Monday morning. The DAVIDGEs and MITCHELLs have returned and Mary HANNAM has been admitted this week. Numbers much higher this week, 62 and 64 children present on Tuesday morning and afternoon.

Nov 19 - The DAVIDGEs and WHITTAKERs have returned but the former are very irregular in theit attendance. Allowed John SPILLARS to leave school at 4 o’clock on Friday afternoon.

Dec 7 - Charles PITMAN has left the school this week having gone to a distant parish to live. Allowed George and Walter JOLLIFFE to leave school at 3.30 on Thursday afternoon as they were required at home.

Feb 22 - School opened all week the same as usual, the Vicar being present every day except Thursday. Jesse BARTE absent from school all the week. John SPILLAR is gone to work.The four MILES’s have left the school on account of their Parents changing dairies.

Mar 22 - Emily and Robert CHIPP have been absent all the week on account of their mother changing house. Has occasion to keep Sarah PERROTT after school on Thursday to work [her] sums which [she] worked wrongly in school time. Admitted John and Susan YORK this week.

Mar 29 - Admitted William andHarry LODER this week from Withey Tree Farm. The registers were not marked on Friday morning only 13 children being pres ent on account of the severity of the weather, the Vicar gave a half holiday in the afternoon.

Apr 5 - The BARTERs are still absent scaring birds. Robert CHIPP has returned this week. Admitted Edward LODER this week. Two of the LOCKs are ill with measles, therefore John LOCK has not been allowed to come.

Apr 12 - The DAVIDGEs and BARTERs are still absent and the LOCKs have not yet recovered from measles. Allowed George HANN to leave school at 11 o’clock to help his father at home.

May 24 _ The girls have commenced their needlework for the Weymouth Exhibition and also for the Examination this week.

The DAVIDGEs continue to come very irregularly. Jesse BARTER has been absent all the week, also Charlotte PERROTT. Mr TURNER came into the school on Friday afternoon to vaccinate some infants. Jun 28 - Admitted Alice NORTHOVER this week, gave George HANN half holiday on Wednesday because he had a sick headache. Several children have been absent this week on account of the hay-making. The Vicar has kindly given the children a holiday this afternoon being Coronation day.

Jul 5 - Admitted Elizabeth DOWN and Eliz: EDWARDS this week. Annie PERRIS has left school to help her mother at home but will come back for the Examination. Judith DOWN has also left to go and stay with her sister. She will come back for the examination. William BARTLETT and Albert WHITTAKER have not been for 4 days this week on account of sickness. Average for thisweek 52.7.

Jul 12 - Admitted E. DOWN andE. EDWARDS this week. Allowed A. NORTHOVER to leave school at 3 o’clock on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.

Jul 19 - The Vicar gave the chn: a half holiday on Tuesday afternoon on account of the Sunday Scholars School Feast which took place on his lawn. Jesse and Alfred BARTER are still at home helping their uncle in the hayfield.

‘I beg to inform you that the Local Authority authorizes the teacher of each Elementary School in the Union to make an entry in the child’s School Book of the date of the child’s birth, on production to him or her, the said teacher, of a baptismal certificate, an extract from the Vaccination Register, or such other evidence as he, or she, may consider sufficient; but that the entry, when once made, must not be altered.’

Jul 26 - The STAINERs and PERROTTs continue very irregular and George PERRIS is always late for school. Kept the 2^nd and 3^rd Standards after school every day for Dictation on account of their writing being badly done. Sep 2 - reopened school today, 45 children present. The WHITTAKERs have been absent all the week, also the DEACONs.

Sep 9 - Rev ?S. STONE from N. Devon visited the school on Tuesday afternoon in company Mr and Mrs COSENS, Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES. The Rev ?S. STONE examined the children’s copy books and heard them sing a few songs. On Thursday the Vicar gave a half holiday on account of the ‘Harvest Tea’ whichwas held in Mr WILLIAMS barn. Flora FOOT is still absent on account of her father being ill.

Sep 15 - George HANN was absent on Thursday afternoon and all day Friday on account of his eye being very bad. Edith STAINER, Richard and Walter are still absent, also Flora FOOT. Kept the bad readers after school to read every day this week.

Sep 20 - Miss COSENS, Mr and Mrs COLLINS and Miss RHODES came into school on Monday morning. Miss RHODES brought a picture of the ‘Farm Yard’ (which she has kindly drawn and painted for the school) on Monday morning.

Sep 27 - Examined the 1^st Class infants in Arithmetic - result very satisfactory with the exception of George PIKE and Harry GILLINGHAM. Flora FOOT and Charlotte PERROTT have returned this week.

Oct 4 - Rev C.H. MAYO sent over 1 dozen new slates, 1 dozen new penholders and a dozen of Gill’s Geography books.

Oct 11 - Admitted Edwin, Emily and Anna BURGESS. Edith STAINER has returned this week. Kept all the worst readers after school to read every day this week. Took Susan SMITH and Annie PERRIS in the evenings to Arithmetic, Grammar etc.

Oct 18 - Admitted Katharine FESTING on Wednesday.

Oct 25 - Admitted Elizabeth HANN this week. Taught the 3^rd Standard compound addition and subtraction, IVth Standard reduction of Avoirdupois weight, Vth Standard Practice by farthings, pence and shillings, also Billsof Parcel, VIth Standard learn Fractions as far as addition. Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES very kindly managed the school on Monday afternoon that the mistress might have a holiday. Taught the 4^th Standard the way to parse sentences fully.

Nov 1 - Admitted Amy MILES this week. The children are progressing favourably with their new Standard work. Average for the week 57.5.

Nov 8 - Miss COSENS, Miss RHODES and Miss GAMLEN came into school on Tuesday afternoon during the singing lesson and examined the needlework which was shown at the examination. Miss BRAINE and another lady came in and looked at the same on Thursday afternoon and said it was above the usual standard. Received my Parchment Certificate on Wednesday.

Nov 9 - Summary of HMI report:

It is a very pleasing school. The children are tidy and orderly, and the instruction is given in a satisfactory and successful manner. The needlework deserves considerable praise.

More books should be provided.

The scholar numbered 39 on the examination schedule is disqualified (Article 29).

H. RIDOUT has not fulfilled the conditions entitling him to the repayment of his fees by the Department.

Feb 14 - Gave Standard III an examination in Arithmetic on Thursday. Emily PERRIS did very badly on account of inattention when the rules are be ing taught.

Mar 7 - First Class commenced learning their Repetition last Tuesday for the Examination and the II Standard have begun their new Samplers for the Examination.

Mar 14 - The 1^st Standard have begun marking Samplers to be shewn in the next Examination. Edwin BURGESS has returned this week after having been away 3 weeks bird ?starving. The Vicar gave us a half holiday Thursday afternoon in order that we might go and see the Steeple Chase at Leweston.

Mar 21 - George GILLINGHAM has been absentall the week being employed in the Gardens at Leweston. Miss COSENS and Miss HIGHMORE came into school on Thursday. Taught chn: a new song ‘Poor old Joe’.

Mar 28 - Had occasion to keep Harry RIDOUTafter school on Friday for irreverence during the Prayers. Emily BURGESS has returned this week.

Apr 4 - George GILLINGHAM and John SPILLARS are gone to work. Edwin BURGESS is still away bird scaring.

Apr 10 - Admitted 3 fresh children this week viz: George, Frederick and Lucy HAYWARD.

Apr 21 - Admitted Arthur GOULD, Jane PIKE and 2 more of the HAYWARDs. The Vicar gave a half holiday on Tuesday afternoon that the room might be prepared for the entertainment in the evening.

Apr 28 - May 2 - The Rev C.H. MAYO kept school for Mistress until Wednesday afternoon and then Miss RHODES and Miss HIGHMORE kindly took charge of the children. On Thursday Mr and Mrs WHITE came into school, heard the children sing several songs with which they were most pleased and gave them all some cake.

May 9 - Admitted Kate DAVIDGE.

May 16 - Admitted Edmund and William WILLEY from Stockbridge and had to cross Charlotte WHITTAKER off the books on account of her dying so suddenly with Croup. Allowed Fanny DOWN toleave school at 4 o’clock on Wednesday to go to Sherborne. Louisa and Xtina BOW have been absent all the week on account of sickness.

May 23 - Emily CHIPP is still absent with Gout in her foot.

May 29 - Admitted George LOCK and allowed Kate HANN to come for a week, her name was not entered on the books because she is under 3.

Jun 6 - There was a whole holiday on Thursday on account of the villagers holding their annual Club.

Jun 13 - Flora FOOT has returned again after a very long absence.

Jun 20 - Edmund and William WILLEY have been absent all week.

Jul 4 - The WILLEYs have returned this week after a fortnight’s absence. Miss COSENS, Miss RHODES, Mrs and Miss STONE came into school on Wednesday afternoon and examined the needlework.

Jul 11 - The Vicar and Teachers opened school on Monday as the mistress went home and did not return until quarter to 11. Admitted Ida CHAFEY this week. Allowed George HANN a whole holiday on Friday to go to Yeovil with his mother. Numbers have been higher this week than they have ever been before the average being 69.3.

Jul 18 - The Vicar gave a half holiday on Tuesday to prepare the room for an entertainment in the evening. Allowed Margaret DOWN to leave school at 3 o’clock on Thursday, therefore her attendance mark was cancelled as was also H. RIDOUT’s on Tuesday morning. Robert CHIPP and W. WILLEY have been absent all week. Harry RIDOUT continues to be exceedingly troublesome, also J. YORK.

The order is good, and the teaching careful and very fairly successful, throughout the school. Needlework has received much attention and deserves special mention. The answers in Grammar were readilyand intelligently given, but in Geography they were not so good.

Mar 19 - Lizzie HANN died on Sunday last therefore her name has been taken off the Registers. The children came into school Friday afternoon at 1.30 so that they might go and sing 2 hymns at their little, loved companion’s Funeral. Several children are away working in Allotment gardens.

Mar 25 - fanny DOWN has been absent for 3 days. Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES came into school on Wednesday afternoon and heard the children sing some songs, with which they were very pleased.

Jun 18 - There was a whole holiday on Wednesday the Vicar very kindly took the Choirs of Long Burton and Holnest for an excursion to Weymouth. The LOCKs have been present all week, the PIKEs have been absent.

Jun 25 - The PIKEs have been present all the week, the YOUNGs are still absent with Hooping cough. William BARTLETT has left the school his Friends having gone to reside at Henstridge.

Jul 2 - Admitted Maud BROWN on Tuesday. Allowed Bessie HANN to go home at 11 o’clock therefore her attendance mark was cancelled. The Vicar gave a whole holiday on Thursday because the Teachers went to the Centenary at Salisbury.

Jul 16 - The Revd Richardson REID from Adelaide, Australia, came into school on Tuesday morning and heard the chn: sing some songs with which he was very much pleased. Miss COSENS, Miss HIGHMORE, Miss LIVETT and Miss RHODES came in as the children were singing and stayed to listen to them.

Jul 23 - Harry LODER and john MARSH have been particularly troublesome this week. Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES came into school this morning. John LOCK has returned this week but Bessie RIDOUT and George SHORT have been absent all week.

Jul 30 - The school has broken up today for the Harvest Holidays which last a month. The Vicar gave a half holiday on Wednesday on account of the Sunday School treat. Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES came into school this morning and Miss PHILPOT and Miss SAVAGE on Thursday afternoon.

Sep 3 - Re-opened the school after a month’s vacation. Numbers small. Many children away gleaning. Admitted Oliver WILLS and Walter WATTS on Monday. Averagefor the week 53.8.

Sep 10 - Numbers have been much higher this week owing to the Officer going to some of the parents. Average for the week 62.6.

Mirs COSENS, Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES came into school and heard the children sing some songs on Wednesday. George and Walter WILLS have given great trouble and been very impudent all the week, being instructed to do so by their mother at home, which they themselves confessed.

Sep 24 - The WHITEs are still absent, alsoEllen SPILLARS with a bad eye. Ida CHAFEY has been twice this week. The attendance officer called this morning. Average for the week 64.8.

Oct 1 - George and Alice PIKE left the village on Monday and Annie YOUNG died on Monday night, having been taken ill in school on Friday morning. Mrs WHITE and Mrs and Miss AUSTEN came into school on Wednesday afternoon with Miss COSENS and examined the Examination Needlework and heard the children sing.

Oct 8 - Admitted Jane GILLINGHAM this week. Had occasion to keep 3^rd Standard in after school today to learn some Geography.

Jan 7 - Reopened the school on Wednesday morning, numbers have been exceedingly small all the wek - average for the week being 24. The Vicar gave up the school on Monday and Tuesday for a Public Tea which is held every year. Admitted George BROWN and George BURGESS on Wednesday.

Jan 14 - Readmitted George COX this week. Kate CROCKER has returned having been absent all last week. Taught 4^th Standard Compound Reduction, Vth Standard Practice with shillings, pence and farthings - and Simple proportion, IVth Standard Vulgar Fractions - G.C.M., L.C.M., improper and proper Fractions and addition.

Summary of H.M. Inspector’s Report:

The order is good and the instruction, except inthe First Standard, most satisfactory on the whole. Two sets of books should be provided for all the Standards.

Taught VI Standard Multipli cation and Division of Fractions and the first 4 rules of Decimals; IV Standard reduction of Weights and Measure Troy, Apothecaries Cloth and Time.

Feb 4 - The attendances have been much better this week owing to the change in the weather, the average being 49.5. Sarah COX, Ada and Kate COOMBES are still at home and Kate CROCKER has left. Taught the VI Standard 3 more rules in Arithmetic and the 5^th Standard Practice with pounds, shillings, pence and farthings. Taught the 5^th Stan dard analysis of sentences and the 4^th Standard parsing of simple sentences, and reduction.

Feb 21 - The LODERs have left the school, their home is now at such a distance as to render attendance impossible.

Feb 25 - The Vicar gave a holiday on Friday morning to enable the children to witness the annual ‘meet’ at Leweston. F. DOWN has been absent from school all the week owing to illness.

Mar 3 - School commenced at 1.30 today instead of the usual time, and the children were dismissed at 3.45 as the schoolroom was required for a tea-meeting. F. DOWN is still absent from illness. Average for the week 48.7.

Mar 14 - I, Elizabeth MANTELL, commenced my duties in this school on this day. Number present 50. The Vicar opened the school and gave the Scripture Lesson to the First Class. Miss RHODES and two other ladies visited the school in the afternoon. [These visits occur regularly in some form or other, not all transcribed here.]

Mar 17 - Miss RHODES visited the school inthe morning and brought some work for the girls.

Mar 21 - Admitted three new children. Alice WHITTAKER returned to this school after a long absence during which time she had been to service.

May 6 - Fanny DOWN, P.T., has taken Standard I this week and great improvement, especially in the writing, has been made in the class during the past week.

May 9 - Louisa BOW, monitress, was absent this afternoon.

May 11 - Attendance specially good this morning 75 being present. Allowed Class I to say their recitation instead of having the usual singing lesson. George COX returned after an absence of 11 weeks on account of illness. Bessie RIDOUT allowed to leave school a little earlier this morning as her mother wanted her.

May 13 - The attendance has been very good throughout the week. The average for this week (70.1) exceeds that for any week for the past eighteen months. Standard I still continues to improve in their work and behaviour.

May 20 - Admitted one girl this week. George and Maud BROWN have left as their parents have removed to Wimborne.

May 24 - Allowed First Class girls to work Arithmetic instead of doing needlework this afternoon.

May 26 - Allowed Thomas DEACON to leave school earlier this morning - cancelled his attendance mark in consequence. Marked registers at 1.30 and closed school at 3.30 this afternoon as a large number of the children are to go to a ‘Band of Hope’ meeting at 4.15.

Several complaints have been made, by the Attendance Officer, to her father but she is still absent.

‘The general results of this year’s Examination are fair. The Spelling of the three lower Standards should be better, and the Arithmetic of the Infants need attention. Geography is weak. Pains have been taken with the Needlework. The supply of Reading Books wants renewing; and another black-board and easel, some Books for the Infants, and one or two doormats are wanted.

F. DOWN has passed fairly. She should be informed that she is now qualified under Article 79; but can only qualify herself under Article 60 by passing satisfactorily under Article 91.

Apr 23 - Admitted Elizabeth SHORT, Rosa DRAPER, Gerard and Thomas WELCH this morning and readmitted Richard DRAPER. 80 children were present this afternoon.

Apr 27 - On Wednesday morning 82 children were present but only 41 this morning on account of wet weather. Took John YOUNG’s name off the register as he has been absent at work two months. Charles and Alfred BATTEN have left. Took Samuel LOCK’s name off R11; he has been absent four weeks.

Apr 30 - Transferred David GOULD’s name to Register 2, also Charles PIKE’s. Readmitted Charles BATTEN.

May 3 - The Rev C.H. MAYO gave the children a holiday, it being Ascension Day.

May 4 - Mistress went home to attend her Father’s Funeral. Fanny DOWN, Ex. P.Teacher, left in charge of school.

May 11 - Mistress returned. Samuel LOCK was readmitted on Monday May 7^th after an absence of 5 weeks, during which time he was at work. The number of children present was very small on Thursday on account of the inclement weather.

May 16 - School closed today on account ofit being the Anniversary of the Club.

May 18 - Took Henry WHITE’s name offas he has been at work eight weeks.

May 21 - Transferred Albert ANTHONY’s name to Register 2. Admitted Albert TRIM and Florence TRIM.

Dec 20 - The Vicar came in the afternoon and distributed the money prizes to those who had attended over 300 times in the past year. Notice was given that after the holidays the school fees would be raised; all children in future to pay 2d per week except farmers’ children who will pay 3d. Miss COSENS and Miss RHODES visited.

‘ The Elementary Subjects have been on the whole well done. The Poetry has also been carefully learnt, and the Grammar is fair, but Geography is rather weak.

Jan 5 - School reopened. All children who come in time for prayers are to receive a red attendance mark. At the end of theyear the red marks alone will be counted in awarding the prizes for regular attendance.

‘This school has passed a good examination. Comparing the results with those of last year there is an advance in the percentage of passes in the Elementary Subjects, and an improvement in the Grammar and geography. The order is quite satisfactory. The Infant Class has made progress during the year and is now in a very fairly efficient state. Mar 16 - The Assistant Mistress resumed her duties today after an absence of six weeks.

Apr 16 - The Vicar visited this afternoon. Attendance dropped today to 59 for no palpable reason.

May 4 - Sent a list of children who have attended irregularly to the attendance officer.

May 11 - The children in Standard V seem to be very dull over their arithmetic; though they have received plenty of instruction. The other Standards are making fair progress.

May 27 - A holiday was given today as it was the anniversary of the Long Burton Club.

Jun 4 - As there was a ?Forester’s Fete in Sherborne, the Vicar kindly gave the school a half holiday.

Jul 10 - The attendance has again been very low throughout the week, owing to the haymaking. Average 62. A half holiday was given on Monday for the S. School treat.

Jul 14 - Standard III can do their sums well but are rather careless.

Jul 29 - A holiday was given today, as the children belonging to the Band of Hope went for an excursion to Bournemouth.

Sep 2 - Children assembled at 1pm as Captain DIGBY had provided a tea for them at 4pm but so few children came to school that I dismissed them again.

Sep 16 - George LOCK, Charles BATTEN and Kate WHITTAKER played truant yesterday afternoon. They were punished by being kept in an hour.

Oct 4 - A wet day, consequently poor attendance.

Oct 12 - Numbers low owing to the fair in Sherborne.

Oct 20 - The 5^th Standard children are exceedingly stupid and careless over their sums. I have had to keep them back nearly an hour both yesterday and today to finish their sums.

Oct 23 - A very wet morning, only 34 children came to school; they were dismissed and the registers not marked, by the Manager’s consent.

Nov 6 - The attendance has been very low this week owing to the weather.

Nov 10 - several of the 5^th Standard children were kept in to work their sums; they are exceedingly dull over this arithmetic, although they have received special attention in that subject. Standards II, IV and IV show more intelligence.

Nov 13 - Kate GILLINGHAM and Lydia WILLIS are attending very irregularly, also Robert and George LOCK. The attendance officer has not visited the school for more than six months.

Nov 16 - Standard V children again kept infor arithmetic. Kate and Jane GILLINGHAM away from school this afternoon for no reason whatever.

Nov 26 - The Vicar stayed all morning and assisted with the instruction as the Mistress was not well.

Dec 9 - The school was examined in the morning by Mr GORDON, H.M.I., assisted by Mr S.M. MORGAN. A half holiday was given in the afternoon at the Inspector’s request.

Dec 11 - The Vicar gave away the prizes for attendance this afternoon. The two children who had attended most regularly were George SHORT and Jane SHERSTON; each of them having attended 436 timesout of 440 that the school had been opened.

‘Mixed School: The results of the examination are again very creditable.

Infants’ Class: The Infant Class is efficient.’

Jan 20 - There was a snowstorm this morning, consequently the attendance was low.

Jan 22 - Standard IV have been taught Compound Long Division this week, and Standard III Compound Subtraction. Took the names of Lydia WILLIS and Matilda SPILLARS from the registers.

Jan 29 - Owing to the snow this week the attendance has been very low. Weekly average 47.6.

Feb 2 - Prolonged the arithmetic lesson in Standard III as the children were so careless.

Feb 12 - Punished several boys on Wednesday for a repeated act of disobedience.

Feb 19 - A great many of the infants are kept from school by bad colds. Emily and Albert COX have not attended school since Xmas. They were reported to the Attendance Officer three weeks ago.

Mar 5 - The weather has been very unfavourable this week. On Monday 30 children attended, on Wednesday 42 and on Friday when it snowed all day only 27 attended.

Apr 1 - Taught Simple Proportion to Standard V and taught Standard VI to work sums by first Principles.

Apr 2 - The children attend very irregularly. Weekly average 62.

May 3 - Admitted two infants.

May 7 - The assistant Mistress has been absent from her duties this week owing to illness.

May 15 - The Assistant Mistress resumed her duties on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday afternoon was wet, only 48 children attended.

May 18 - A wet  morning, only 49 present. Admitted Beatrice CURTIS.

May 24 - Admitted Mary BROWN.

May 31 - Admitted Joseph DEACON. The 5^th Standard are very backward in their arithmetic as they attend so irregularly.

Jun 10 - The Assistant Mistress and the Monitress had a holiday this afternoon to enable them to attend a Choral Festival in Sherborne Abbey.

Jun 16 - A holiday was given today as the club held their annual festival.

Jul 2 - The attendance has been lower thisweek owing to the haymaking.

Jul 6 - Most of the elder boys are kept from school to assist with the haymaking.

Aug 25 - Mrs ARMSTRONG, a lady who is staying in the village for a few weeks, visited the school this morning.

Aug 30 - Received some new reading books from the Vicar viz: 12 Historical Readers for Standard V, 12 Infant Readers and 4 Geographical Readers, also some copy and exercise books. Took the names of George MULLETT, Louise HEWITT, Kate WHITTAKER and Mary BROWN from the register.

Sep 7 - Mrs ARMSTRONG visited and heard the children sing some songs.

Sep 14 - The 4^th Standard boys are backward in spelling.

Sep 14 - Because Bertha PUCKETT was told that she would be required to take her turn in assisting to sweep the schoolroom, her father came to me and threatened to re move her from the school.

Sep 20 - The Vicar says that if any child does not take her turn in sweeping the school she must pay an extra penny per week.

Sep 27 - Bertha PUCKETT has begun to pay 4d per week, so she will not be required to sweep the room.

Oct 10 - Attendance lower than usual owing to the annual Fair in Sherborne.

Oct 11 - A half holiday was given as most of the children were going to the fair in Sherborne.

Oct 15 - Weekly average only 56.

Oct 21 - Examined Standards III-VI in arithmetic with very fair results. Fred WILLS and Ellen DEACON require special attention.

Nov 5 - A very wet day, but the attendancewas good.

Nov 12 - This has been a very wet week, therefore the attendance has not been so good as last week.

Nov 23 - Kept Standard IV back to read, as some of them read very indifferently.

Dec 8 - Robert TRIM will not be presented to H.M. Inspector for examination, on account of intellectual deficiency.

‘The order is good, and a very good percentage of passes has been reached. Handwriting is rather poor. English and geography are pretty good. Needlework is creditable, and the Infants’ Class is in nice order.’

Jan 13 - The Vicar gave a half holiday so that the children might go to Holnest to see Mr DRAX’s funeral.

Jan 14 - The attendance has been low this week, average 50.7.

Jan 25 - Taught Standard IV Reduction (Avoirdupois weight).

Feb 4 - Charlotte PERROTT, the Infants Teacher, has been absent from her duties since Monday owing to a bad throat.

Feb 15 - The school has been kept on sincelast Monday by the Assistant Mistress, Miss DOWN, as the Mistress has been home owing to the death of her mother. Mistress resumed her duties today.

Feb 18 - The Vicar has kindly taken my Scripture class with his own this week as I have not been well.

Feb 21 - Charlotte PERROTT, the Infants Teacher, asked leave of absence this afternoon that she might go to Sherborne to seethe doctor.

Feb 25 - Charlotte PERROTT has been absentfrom her duties since Monday.

Mar 4 - The Infants have been taught by Martha WHITTAKER as Charlotte PERROTT is not well enough to resume her duties.

Mar 7 - Charlotte PERROTT resumed her duties today.

 Mar 14 - Charlotte PERROTT asked leave of absence this afternoon to go to Sherborne to see the doctor.

Mar 15 - As there was very deep snow and only 19 children came to school they were dismissed for the day and the registers were not marked.

Mar 16 - Only 26 children came in the morning and 12 in the afternoon, so they were dismissed again and the registers not marked.

Mar 17 - As the attendance was so small this morning owing to deep snow the school was closed for the rest of the week.

Mar 20 - Opened school this morning with a poor attendance owing to the bad state of the roads.

Mar 22 - A number of children were absent from school this afternoon, as there was a tea at the chapel.

Mar 28 - Took the names of John, Herbert and Arthur YEATMAN from the registers, as they have left the village.

Apr 18 - Admitted two infants Bessie DEACON and Tom PEACH.

Apr 21 - The Attendance Officer called at the school at my request and promised to compel some of the children to attend more regularly.

Apr 29 - Received a medical certificate tothe effect that owing to some disease of the eyes Henry LOCK must not attend school for the present. Admitted three children to the infant class.

May 13 - Admitted three children this week.

May 18 - A wet day.

May 20 - Standard IV can now parse simple sentences pretty correctly.

May 27 - Mistress away Thursday and Friday. School was kept on by the Assistant Mistress. Weekly average 66.2.

Jun 1 - The Assistant Mistress has a holiday to go to the Agricultural Show at Dorchester. Of the six children who were sent in for the Written Examination in Religious Knowledge on May 7^th four have been successful. Gertrude CURTIS and Jane SHERSTON being placed in the 1^st Class and Martha WHITTAKERand George SHORT in the 2^nd.

Jun 2 4 - The attendance has been down this week owing to haymaking.

Jun 28 - A day’s holiday was given as the club held their anniversary.

Jul 7 - Assistant obtained leave of absence this afternoon.

Jul 11 - Assistant had leave of absence to attend her aunt’s funeral. The rev Mr TOMLINSON visited the school.

Jul 27 - A whole holiday was given as the Band of Hope has their excursion to Seaton.

Aug 29 - Reopened school today. Admitted four new children in the Infants’ Class and took four names from the register.

Aug 30 - Attendance good. 73 present.

Sep 2 - The weather was very unfavourable, consequently the attendance was much lower. 54 present.

Sep 9 - Have reported several children to the Attendance Officer as they have not attended since the holidays.

Sep 16 - The attendance has not been good this week. Some children have been absent owing to sickness. The WHITEs of Holnest and Albert STAINER have not returned since the holidays.

Oct 3 - The CHAMBERLAINs, WHITEs and Albert STAINER attend very irregularly, they have been repeatedly reported to the Attendance Officer.

Oct 14 - Commenced fires this week as it has been very cold. Albert STAINER is still absent, he has only made 103 attendances this year.

Oct 17 - A great many children absent owing to Sherborne Fair.

Oct 21 - Albert STAINER is still absent.

Oct 25 - Some of the IV Standard children write very carelessly, they will require special attention. Two new maps have been provided - North and South America.

Nov 1 - It was so very wet and rough this morning that only 18 children came to school. They were dismissed again, and the registers were not marked. Only 36 present this afternoon.

Nov 10 - The boys in Standard IV need special attention to their reading.

Nov 21 - Received 2 dozen new slates for the school, and the new registers.

Dec 2 - Gave a lesson on Longitude to the 1^st Class.

Dec 9 - Some of the 1^st class Infants are rather backward in the subtraction of numbers.

Dec 12 - Alfred HANN, Herbert HANN and John WHITE, boys in Standards IV, III and I respectively, have been kept from school and employed in beating covers today by the keeper at Holnest park. The Vicar has sent notice of it to the Attendance Officer, requesting him to take steps in this matter.

14 Dec - School examined by Mr BUTT. A half holiday given in the afternoon.

Jan 6 - Summary of the Inspector’s Report:

‘The children are very orderly, and have again passed, on the whole, a really good examination. The percentage is a high one, and the quality of the passes in the lower standards is generally good. In the upper standards the work is not quite so successful, spelling in the fourth Standard being weak, and bare passes preponderating in the arithmetic of the fourth, sixth and seventh Standards. English is fairly good and Geography fair. In this last subject the answering in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh Standards is not general enough. Needlework is well done and the Infants very fairly prepared in their work.’

Jan 9 - School reopened. Have decided that, for the present, the first Standard shall remain in the classroom, and be taught by Charlotte PERROTT with the Infants as the number of Infants is so very small.

Jan 13 - The percentage of passes at the late examination was 95. Only one boy failed in two subjects viz: ?Wasley BIRD in Writing and Arithmetic; the other failures, seven in number, were in Writing.

Jan 17 - Gave the Vicar the list of the new reading books required for the school. Took the names of Annie BIRD, Mary GOULD, Tom WELCH and Ethel WELCH from the registers, the two former having left school and the WELCHs gone from the village. Martha WHITTAKER’s name is also taken off as she has passed Standard VII.

Jan 31 - John and Emily WHITE of Holnest have been absent from school for a month; they were reported to the Attendance Officer more than a week ago.

Feb 1 - The snow was rather deep so many children did not attend. 24 came in the morning and 27 in the afternoon.

Oct 4 - Sent Ernest COX home as he is suffering from a disease of the skin.

Oct 5 - Harry WILLS who is in the 6^th Standard attends very irregularly - he has made only one attendance during the last week. Took Rose MORRIS’ name fromthe register as her parents have left the village.

Oct 12 - Miss DOWN has taken Standard I this week instead of Standard III which was taught by the Mistress. The change was made so that Miss DOWN might work up Standard I in Arithmetic, some of them being rather backward.

Oct 15 - Attendance lower than last week, some of the children having gone to Sherborne Fair. Took Harry WILLS’ name from the register as he has left school.

Oct 16 - A half holiday was given as a great many of the children wanted to go to Sherborne Fair.

Oct 26 - There has been much better attendance this week, and the children are more punctual than they were. Weekly average 65.5.

Nov 7 - Commenced fires today, as it is very cold.

Nov 9 - This has been a very wet week, but attendance has been good. Weekly average 65.9.

Nov 13 - Owing to heavy rains the road was flooded this morning, only 34 children present.

Nov 30 - The attendance throughout the year has been lower than usual, partly owing to the exceptionally wet summer.

Dec 4 - Two boys are kept from school, being employed by a keeper at Holnest Park in beating the woods for those who are shooting. The same boys (Alfred HANN and John WHITE) were kept away for the same purpose just previous to the last examination.

Dec 20 - The Sanitary Inspector visited the school.

Jan 9 - Summary of the Inspector’s report:

The discipline is very satisfactory, and the results in Reading, Writing and Arithmetic are very creditable. English and geography are good,as a whole, though Grammar in the fourth standard and Geography in the third standard are below the mark. Needlework is well taught, and the infantsR 17; classes are receiving due attention.

Expenditure on money prizes is inadmissible under Article 99, and should not again appear in the Account given on Form IX.

Oct 1 - Jane SHERSTON is away from school owing to bad sight.

Oct 7 - Mr BIRD has complained that the Infants Teacher Charlotte PERROTT struck one of his children on the head with a slate on Friday afternoon. On making strict enquiry I find that the statement is quite untrue, the child having been struck by one of her sisters in the dinner hour. I have sent a note to Mr BIRD to that effect.

Oct 11 - The BIRDs have not been sent to school this week. Their parents evidently take the children’s part in spite of my letter informing them of the strict enquiry made both by the Vicar and myself.

Oct 18 - This has been a rather poor week for attendance owing to the Sherborne Pack Monday Fair. A half holiday was given on Tuesday afternoon as so many children were going to Sherborne. The BIRDs are still absent.

Oct 21 - The BIRDs have returned to school.

Nov 13 - The Bishop of Salisbury visited the school this morning, accompanied by the Vicar, and heard the children sing a hymn.

Dec 2 - Charlotte PERROTT absent through illness.

Dec 3 - Charlotte PERROTT absent today. The infants were taught by the Mistress with the help of one of the elder girls.

Dec 6 - The Infants’ Teacher Charlotte PERROTT has been absent from her duties the whole week. Standard I and the upper division of the Infants taught by Mistress with Standards IV, V, VI and VII. The lower division of the Infants taught by the elder girls in turn.

Dec 13 - The Monitress Charlotte PERROTT is still too ill to attend to her duties.

Dec 17 - Commenced afternoon school at 1 p.m. and closed at 3.20 so that the room might be cleaned before dark.

Dec 19 - At the examination yesterday there were only three failures viz Minnie SMITH Standard II in Arithmetic, Henry ANTHONY Standard III Arithmetic, Olive WILLS Standard V Writing. The passes were atthe rate of 98 per cent. As the school has done so well theVicar has given an extra day’s holiday. School closed today (Thursday) for the Xmas holidays.

Jan 6 - Summary of H.M. Inspector’s report:

‘The results are most creditable to Teachers and children alike. The way in which the Arithmetic has been done deserves a special word of praise.’

Feb 23 - Ada RIDOUT returned to school this morning after an absence of seven weeks on account of a bad throat. Admitted Arthur TAPPER.

Feb 25 - Florence TRIM was withdrawn from school before the expiration of the regulation two hours so her attendance was cancelled.

Feb 27 - The children were examined in thework of the past quarter instead of working as usual. The results were fairly satisfactory. The arithmetic of Ethel COOMBS in Standard IV, the reading of James WILLIS in Standard V, and the work generally of Albert COX in Standard II require special attention.

Mar 4 - This morning a bar of the playground gate was found chopped to pieces and another had been cut. It is evidently the work of some mischievous boy and the Vicar is trying to find out who did it.

Mar 10 - School closed today on account ofthe snow, which prevented the children from coming.

Mar 13 - No school since Monday on accountof the weather.

Mar 16 - School reopened today, but on account of the rain and the bad state of the roads only 29 were present this morning, and this afternoon 33.

Mar 18 - This morning the new drawing materials came together with 8 new Geographical readers for Standard II and 1 doz: Arithmetic books for Standard III.

Mar 19 - The monitress, Charlotte PERROTT,was absent this afternoon from illness.

Mar 23 - Charlotte PERROTT was absent today, so the Infants and Standard I were taught by the mistress and assistant.

Mar 24 - The children had no play this morning on account of coming in from play noisily yesterday. William WALLIS and Charles DAY ran home yesterday without doing a task given them for talking and playing during school time, so today have to write yesterday’s task and an additional hundred lines. Have also sent a note to William’s father to tell him of the misconduct.

Mar 26 - We have not been keeping strictlyto the Time Table this week. Once or twice lessons have been altered for the sake of convenience as the monitress has been away all the week ill. This morning the Vicar found that another stave of the playground gate had been cut. It was cut before on March 4^th.

Apr 6 - The Vicar brought a dozen new slates for the drawing of Standard I. All the Standard V boys were kept in this afternoon to work two sums because they had wasted their time in Arithmetic lesson. Charlotte PERROTT being still away the Infants and Standard I have to be taught by the mistress and assistant. Removed the names of Susan HANN and Emily WHITE from the register. The parents of the former have left the village and the latter has not been since the last examination. James CHEHEY’s name removed.

Apr 7/8 - Another stave of the school gatehas been cut, a reward is offered for the discovery of the offender. Readmitted Walter and Ellen SANSOM. The former os eight years old and cannot read such words as ‘it’ and ‘as̵7;. He is equally backward in the other subjects.

Apr 13 - On Saturday the small gate was found cut in spite of the offered reward. Bessie STAINER has been employed as temporary monitress in the place of Charlotte PERROTT, who is still in hospital.

May 13 - All the WALLIS family were absentfrom school this afternoon.

May 14 - The school gate was again found cut this morning. The WALLISes were absent again this afternoon.

May 22 - Kept all the IV and V Standard boys in to write 100 lines for being idle and inattentive during the singing lesson.

May 25 - Readmitted Jane LOCK, who has returned home. She left the parish for ten weeks.

May 26 - Removed Louis WALLIS’ name from the register. He has only been one week since being admitted, but has had a cold and is not coming until he is a little older.

May 27 - A whole holiday given on account of it being Club day.

Jun 1 - The registers were marked and the first lesson taken by the assistant as the mistress did not come to school until a quarter to eleven. Began marking the registers according to the New Code this morning, that is with an ‘O’ instead of ‘a’ for absentees.

Jun 10 - Amy RIDOUT was withdrawn from school before the expiration of two hours, soher attendance was cancelled. Both Amy RIDOUT and William WALLIS came in the afternoon just as the registers were closed, so lost their mark.

Jun 11 - The assistant left school at half past two this afternoon in order to attend the Choral Festival at Sherborne. On this account the mistress was unable to give the Infants their usual object lesson.

Jun 16 - Another bar of the gate was found broken off this morning.

Jun 22 - The assistant was unable to be at school on account of being ill. On this account the boys did not have Drawing in the afternoon but had Arithmetic and Reading instead. The Infants had Poetry instead of singing.

Jun 23 - The assistant is still ill. During the dinner hour some boys still further broke the gate by throwing great stones at it. The Vicar was not able to investigate the matter being away from home. It will be done tomorrow.

Jun 24 - The assistant was able to come to school today at ten o’clock.

Jun 26 - The attendance was very poor this morning. A great many children are gone to Sherborne to see the circus.

Jun 29 - The Infants were kept in from play this morning because of their disorderly behaviour. Admitted Lucy ORAM.

Jun 30 - Mr MAYO brought over an abacus for the Infants and Bacon’s Drawing Chart for Standards I and II this morning.

Jul 3 - This afternoon the III Standard (Drawing) boys began to draw in books. Till now they have been using loose sheets of paper because the books ordered were out of print. The rain this week has made the attendance very poor. Removed Eliz: HUSKINSON’s name from the registers. She has left the village.

Jul 15 - As this was the day of the Sunday School treat the registers were closed at half past one and school ended at half past three.

Dec 7 - As the rain had got into the Classroom during the night the Infants had to be taught today in the schoolroom. They could not therefore have their usual singing lesson this afternoon. They had repetition. Lancelot VINCENT withdrawn from school at eleven o’clock so cancelled his attendance mark.

Dec 9 - This morning the Vicar brought another new picture for the Schoolroom.

Dec 10 - This afternoon the Vicar came in to hear the upper standards say their poetry. Jane LOCK is very imperfect in hers owing to her irregular attendance.

Dec 11 - Charles DAY kept in and punished for having come into school in a disorderly manner this morning.

Dec 16 - The Infants had their last lesson this afternoon in the Schoolroom, that the Classroom might be cleaned.

Dec 18 - The result of the Drawing examination ‘Good’.

Dec 21 - The children were arranged in their new standards this morning. James WILLSis to remain another year in Standard V and Albert COX in Standard II. All the others have moved up. Removed the names of Arthur and George RIGGS from the registers as their parents have left the village.

Dec 23 - The attendance was very poor this afternoon, only 43 present.

Dec 24 - Only 36 were present this morning. At twelve we closed for the Christmas holidays which last for a fortnight.

School opened again this morning after the holidays, instead of Monday as at first intended on account of an entertainment being held on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Very few children were present, many being ill. The Assistant is ill with Influenza.

Jan 14 - The Assistant and Monitress were both away today, the latter on account of her mother’s illness. Only 28 children present this afternoon.

Jan 15 - The Montress was at school this morning but the Assistant is still confinedto her bed. Removed Frederick TRIM’s name from the register. He has passed Standard IV and is now gone to work. Only 25 present this afternoon. Weekly average 28.8.

Jan 18 - Summary of the Inspector’s Report:

R16;The school work is of fair average quality throughout. The order is pretty good.’

The school account sheet has been put up in the Church porch. Frederick TRIM has left work and returned to school for another year. Only 22 present this morning. The Assistant still away ill.

Jan 19 - Many of the children are ill, and many absent on account of a flood, this afternoon. Only 18 present.

Jan 22 - The boys have not had drawing this week, as, owing to the absence of the Assistant, the Mistress was not able to give them suff icient attention. Weekly average 28.3.

Jan 26 - Ada RIDOUT returned to school after an absence of six weeks. Admitted Robert and Annie GALTON this afternoon. The children were not allowed to play this afternoon for coming in disorderly in the morning.

Jan 26 - None of the BIRDs have yet returned to school and some of the children are still ill.

Jan 28 - The Assistant returned to school this morning.

Feb 2 - James WILLS was caned this morning for flagrant disobedience and he will not be allowed any play for the rest of the week.

Feb 5 - The attendance was not so good this morning, perhaps owing to the storm which fell at school time.

Feb 8 - Removed Frederick TRIM’s name from the registers. He has left the village. Walter SANSOM left school at half past eleven because he was unwell, so cancelled his attendance. Sidney WILLS was marked absent by mistake this afternoon.

Feb 11 - Agnes BIRD was allowed to leave school before twelve so cancelled her attendance.

Oct 28 - Unavoidably detained Monday (at Mr DAY’s, Shaftesbury) therefore called the register at 10.30am and dismissed at 12.30.Commenced fires in school yesterday. A new stove being erected in large classroom.

Nov 4 - The drawing exam was held on Wednesday - 21 were examined, Thomas CHENEY the only one absent owing to illness. Withdrew Emily STANFIELD’s name from the register. She is required at home.

Nov 18 - Attendance greatly increased. Started model drawing forSt V today. Rev MAYO brought the new Registers for ensuing year, also new admission register.

Nov 25 - Beatrice CURTIS (monitor) absent Thursday afternoon on account of illness. Miss SHERSTON took her place and with a slight deviation fromTime Table managed all the Standards. The report of drawing examination came Monday, ‘Good’ being obtained. Annie DAY and Minnie SMITH swept school.

Dec 2 - Withdrawn Willie TRIM’s name from register. I expelled him from Sunday School for bad manners, therefore his reason for leaving day school (Standard VI).

The two lower standards have done very fairly, but in other respects the work of the school is decidedly poor. Classwork is fair. Singing by note must improve to earn the Grant another years. The offices need attention. So large an Infants’ Class clearly requires more experienced teaching.

May 26 - Received 1 doz lead pencils. Holiday on Wed: it being the Annual Meeting of the Song Club. Have given  Miss SHERSTON charge of the Infants and Beatrice CURTIS is assisting with the lower standards.

Jun 2 - Emma and Blanche BURR gone to Bournemouth for a week. James WALLIS returned to school after a week’s absence with a bad leg.

Jun 16 - Willie TRIM, James WALLIS, Thomas GRANGER, Thomas SYMES, Rose GILLINGHAM, Louisa DUNFORD, Sarah COX, Rose SANSOM and Ada RIDOUT have been transferred from Classroom into 1^st Standard to try and reduce the average attendance in Infant room. Was told before the children ‘I must leave’ (by the Rector) as I refused to acquiesce with his demands as regards Frank GILLINGHAM’s insubordination. Received my 3 months notice the same morning (12^th).

Jan 12 - Less than 40 children present. School Staff reduced on account of resignation of Miss DOWN, Assistant, (Dec: 22^nd 1893).

Summary of Inspector’s Report:

The discipline is satisfactory, but the results are not very first rate. The elementary subjects are but just fair, taken as a whole, the second and third standards being very weak in Spelling and the third, fourth and fifth standards in Arithmetic. The paperwork generally needs a lot of attention, Handwriting and figures being poor as a rule. English has improved and is fairly good, but Geography is only fair and no maps have been attempted. Singing by Note is passable and Needlework creditable. The Infant classes are making fair progress.

The class room is below the minimum size required by Rule 7 of Schedule VIII of the Code and should be enlarged.

The special attention of the Managers is requested to the enclosed Form 69.

Jan 11 - Re-opened the school on Monday Jan 7^th with very few scholars. Snow kept some away. Readmitted Kate SARTIN.

Jan 18 - School closed on Monday and Tuesday. Also Wednesday morning on account of snow and rain. Wednesday afternoon only 31 in attendance which were registered. Average very low indeed. No excuse for absence the latter part of the week. Average35.2.

Summary of Inspector’s Report:

The order is very satisfactory and, considering the sickness which has prevailed during the year, the children have acquitted themselves very fairly in Elementary Subjects. …. Classwork has greatly improved and Singing by Note, except in the first Division. Needlework is well done, and the infants’ Classes are progressing fairly well. …

J. SHERSTON has passed fairly, but should attend to Geography. No payment can be made under Article 102 for her as she is not required to make up the minimum staff of the school.

Jul 15 - Have carefully examined the children and find many of them are quite unfit for the standard in which they are at present. Standards II and III are especially bad in spelling and arithmetic, and consequently have been obliged to reduce several children to a lower standard. Writing throughout the school is bad, also singing by note.

Sep 7 - Examined the Infants yesterday and found them especially weak in reading and arithmetic. Their writing is fairly good. Mary CHAMBERLAIN withdrawn.

Sep 23 - Received on Monday September 16^th 1 ½ dozen ‘Royal English History Readers’ (Tudor Period) for the 1^st class. Examined the Infants on Friday. They have improved in reading and writing, but  are very weak in arithmetic.

Oct 18 - James WALLIS has not been able to write or draw for three weeks, as he has a bad thumb. Attendance still very poor. Standard III have improved very much in Arithmetic, but their spelling is still bad.

Oct 25 - On Wednesday afternoon school began at 1 o’;clock and closed at 3:15, as the room was required for a concert in the evening. William BRAKE has been absent for three weeks, on account of his mother being ill.

Nov 11 - Mr GALE organizing visitor for the Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education, examined the school on Wednesday (November 6^th) Holiday given in the afternoon. William BAKE has returned to school after an absence of four weeks. The low average of last week was owing to the heavy rain.

Nov 15 - Revd Canon MAYO attended on Monday and Tuesday taking the 1^st class in Scripture, and called yesterday afternoon with Mr GALE’s report. Standard III Arithmetic and Spelling, and Standard II Spelling were the weakest points. Class work, English and History were on the whole good. The work ofthe Infants’ Class shows a decided improvement.

Dec 13 - School examined by Mr BUTT, H.M.I., yesterday. Holiday given in the afternoon. Have given Jane SHERSTON release from school duties from Dec: 12^th to Dec: 17^th in order to attend the scholarship examination at Sherborne next week.

Jan 10 - Reopened the school on Monday Jan: 6^th. Mary BIRD, Agnes BIRD, Kate WILLS, Ada RIDOUT, Walter SANSOM (Mixed) and Elizabeth LOCK (Infant) withdrawn December 12^th 1895. Elizabeth LOCK has gone home. Re-arranged the classes on Monday, and began to work by the new Time Table.. Opened school on Thursday afternoon at 1 o’clock, and closed at 3.15pm, as room was required for Temperance Tea and meeting.

Summary of the Inspector’s Report:

The school has suffered much this year from sickness and change of Teachers, but has passed a fairly good examination under the circumstances. Arithmetic is very weak. The discipline is very good. The ventilation of the Infant Room requires some attention.

Sep 25 - Withdrawn Rose SANSOM, Kate SANSOM (Stan: II) and Lucy SANSOM (Stan: I) as their parents are leaving the District. The average has fallen again this week, owing to so much rain.

Oct 2 - School was open on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock and closed at 3.15pm as the room was wanted for a concert in the evening. The attendance has improved this week, the average being 51.

Oct 12 - Rose SANSOM and Kate SANSOM who left the village on Sept: 29^th, returned again on Oct: 5^th, came to school for one attendance, and on Oct: 9^th left again for North Wootton. Albert WILLIAMS (Infant) withdrawn on Oct: 5^th, as his parents have gone to Sherborne to live. The attendance last week was very poor, owing tothe stormy weather. Only 30 children present this morning on account of the Fair at Sherborne.

Oct 19 - The average attendance was only 35.7 for the week ending Oct: 16^th, ’96. Many of the children were kept at home to help in the gardens.

Oct 24 - Sent the names of thirteen children who have attendee school very irregularly to Mr TULK, school attendance officer, yesterday.

Oct 30 - William BAKE has been unable to write or draw for a week, on account of a burn on his right arm. Thomas CHENEY has been absent from school for three weeks, with a bad neck.

Nov 16 - Examined the Infants on Friday. They show great improvement in all their work, especially in Arithmetic. Reading is the weakest point. Bessie COX left school on Tuesday as she has gone to London.

Nov 20 - Examined the Infants this morning and find they have improved in Reading, and alsoin Arithmetic (Subtraction).

Dec 4 - … only 30 scholars present this morning, and 22 this afternoon owing to the rough weather.

Jan 7 - The school was reopened on Monday Jan 4^th, by the Assistant, as Mistress did not return from home until Monday evening, on account of a death in the family. Harry COX (Stand: VI), Annie DAY and Jane ANTHONY (Stand: V), Rebecca VINCENT (Infant) withdrawn Dec: 18^th ’96.

Jan 9 - Average attendance for week ending Jan: 8^th 1897 =3D 37.9. So much rain during the past week accounts for the low average.

Jan 21 - Gave Miss SHERSTON holiday on Monday afternoon. Blanche BURR has been absent from school all the week on account of illness. The attendance throughout the week has been very low indeed, owing to the cold weather, and the absence of five 1^st Class boys, Arthur CURTIS, Cecil RIDOUT, Tom CHENEY, John GILLINGHAM and William BRAKE, the last four being employed in cover beatingat Holnest.

Summary of the Inspector’s Report:

The discipline and tone are very satisfactory and a good year’s work has been done. The results of the examination in the elementary subjects are very fair, in class work they are good. Needlework is taught very creditably, and the infant classes are making due progress.

Feb 5 - … heavy rain on Tuesday and today. On Tuesday there were only 17 children present in the morning, and 22 in the afternoon. This morning there were 19, and this afternoon 23.

Feb 15 - Stanley RAYS was absent all last week with a bad leg. Have taken Susan WILLS’ name off the registers, as she has gone to London for two mo nths. Arthur CURTIS (Stand: VII) has returned to school this morning after an abs ence of six weeks.

Feb 23 - Stanley RAYS has returned to school. Beatrice CURTIS (Monitress) was absenton Thursday and Friday as she was not well.

Mar 2 - Readmitted Ernest FELL, and admitted Reginald PIKE (Infants) yesterday, March 1^st.

Mar 3 - Unable to have school this morning as only 7 children came, owing to heavy storm.

Mar 8 - On account of continuation of tremendous gale, school was not opened until Thursday afternoon, when 29 children were present. Margaret HAYWARD and Annie HAYWARD returned to school this morning after an absence of some weeks.

Mar 26 - There is only one boy, Cecil RIDOUT, in Standard VI and he is doing fairly well. Mr TULK called this afternoon, and took the names of John GILLINGHAM and Tom CHAMBERLAIN who have attended school very irregularly.

Apr 6 - Admitted on Monday March 29^th Lily ELSWORTH (Stand I), Elsie ELSWORTH, Arthur ELSWORTH and Evelina GILLINGHAM (Infants). The average attendance 46.5.

Apr 12 - Received for School 4 dozen exercise books, 6 dozen copy books, box of pens, box of chalk, and box of slate pencils. Standard III have commenced doing their arithmetic on paper. Admitted this morning Reginald BARTER (Stand IV) and Betram BARTER (Infant). Five GILLINGHAMs are absent from school by Doctor’s order, as Arthur GILLINGHAM has scarlet fever.

Apr 27 - Admitted Edith F.E. BAIGENT (Infant).

May 3 - The attendance today has been much better. There were 53 children present this morning, and 55 this afternoon. The GILLINGHAMs have not yet returned to school. Re-admitted Susan WILLS (Stand VII) and admitted Edward Frank TULK (Infant) this morning.

May 11 - The GILLINGHAMs returned to school yesterday.

May 17 - The children in the VI and VII Standards attend very irregularly, consequently their work is very unsatisfactory. Tom CHENEY age 13 years returned to school this morning for the first time since the Easter holidays.

Jun 1 - Received on May 24^th for school use 1 dozen slates for Stand I, Picture of Lighthouse and Specimens of Sponge for Object Lessons. Only 16 children present this morning owing to heavy rain.

Jun 9 - Gave Miss SHERSTON holiday on Thursday to go to Weymouth. Emma BURR (StandV) has been home for a fortnight ill, and Jane DAY (St: V) has attended very irregularly lat ely.

Jun 23 - Admitted Alfred John GUNDRY (St: III) on Tuesday June 15^th. Gave Beatrice CURTIS permission to leave school at 2.45pm last Thursday, as she wanted to go to Sherborne.

Jun 28 - The school was opened only five times last week. Holiday being given on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon on account of ‘Jubilee Festivities’. The Revd. Canon MAYO very kindly took charge of the school on Friday morning to enable mistress to attend the ‘Jubilee Festivities at Thornford. Arthur CURTIS (Stand VI) returned to school this morning, after an absence of six weeks.

Jul 3 - The work of all classes, excepting the 1^st class, is making due progress. The 1^st class attend so irregularly, that their work is most unsatisfactory. Tom CHAMBERLAIN (Stand III) has been absent from school for three weeks on account of weak eyes. Sent names of eleven children who have attended very irregularly to Mr TULK, school attendance officer, yesterday.

Jul 9 - Many of the children in the upper classes have been absent this week, which retards progress in their work.

Jul 19 - Admitted William LOCK and Bertram NEWPORT (Infants) on Monday July 12^th. There are now 23 infants on the books. On account of intense heat had singing instead of drill last week. Holiday given today as the members of the Temperance Society have gone to Weymouth.

Jul 23 - Inspected the school - J. BUTT. Something should be done to secure greater punctuality on the part of the children coming from a distance. None of them live 2 miles away and yet they habitually dawdle in till 9.30 o’clock and after - 21 were late this morning. Signed: J.B.

Aug 30 - Emma BURR (Stand V) has not yet returned to school on account of illness.

Sep 6 - The wet weather last week account fo the low average. Emma BURR is still unable to attend school.

Sep 13 - On Thursday morning there were only 27 children present, owing to heavy rain.

Sep 20 - Arthur CURTIS and Thomas CHENEY have left school. The pictures have been hung in the schoolroom, according to the request of Mr BUTT, H.M.A.I.

Sep 25 - Have marked Emma BURR left, as she will be unable to attend school during winter months, on account of delicate health. The children coming from a distance have been more punctual in coming to school this week.

Dec 1 - Received Drawing Report ‘God’ being awarded. Began new registers today, and re-arranged the classes, and began new work.

Dec 13 - On Friday afternoon the Revd: Canon MAYO called and presented Rosa ORAM with a prize for having made the highest number of attendances during the year ending Nov: 30^th 1897. Out of 431 attendances she made 430.

Dec 23 - Miss SHERSTON (Assistant) has given up her duties in this school today Dec:23^rd ’97. The school has closed this afternoon for Christmas Holidays, two weeks being given.

Nov 15 - The stove in the big-room, continually smoke[s], during the wet, and cold weather and has to be put out, this makes it very miserable, for Scholars and Teacher. The children had to go out this morning, into the playground, till the smoke had cleared off, while the fire was put out.

Nov 16 - Sarah COX, IV Standard girl, still absent, her name has been sent in continually.

Nov 18 - Cecil DUNFORD and his brother Maurice, and Herbert COX, went home this afternoon, at 3pm, without permission, while the children were out at play.

Jul 12 - The Scripture Examination was held this morning. A holiday was given in the afternoon.

Jul 13 - The mistress being unwell, the school, in the morning, was left in charge of the teacher, B. CURTIS, who had an accident and upset the ink over the register.

Jul 17 - Report of the Scripture Examination:

The school has passed a satisfactory Examination, and there is every promise of progress. The First Standard Children and the Infants acquitted themselves excellently.

Jul 18 - Lily ELSWORTH (3^rd Standard) went home during recreation time. When she returned she was punished when she again left the school without permission.

Jul 20 - The Attendance not very good owing probably to a fête in the next village. 32 present in the afternoon.

Jul 27 - Canon MAYO took charge of the school as the mistress was unwell.

Dec 6 - Rebecca VINCENT’s mark cancelled, as she was sent home on account of sickness.

Dec 8 - Four children have gone this afternoon to be examined for a Labor [sic] Certificate. The attendance bad this week so many being away ill. The Vicar has said that a medal will be given, at the end of the year, to every child who has not lost an attendance.

Dec 14 - Robert GALTON’s mark cancelled, as he went home before time.

Dec 15 - Received a notice today saying that neither of the children who were examined last week for a Labor Certificate have passed.

The lower part of the school should not be crammed into the ‘lean to’ for their Scripture Lesson - 25 were present this morning and this no: is not a full attendance. The atmosphere at 9.45 was fearful. The Attendance Board must be painted so that it may be really useful. The Drawing report must be entered in full.

May 21 - J.W. DIGBY Esq:, M.P., has requested that the children might have a half holiday to-day because of Mafeking.

May 24 - The Rev canon MAYO opened the school on Monday and Wednesday morning. When Mr BUTT visited the school on May 3^rd he said that the children might have a holiday but suggested they should have it later, to enable them to see the Yeomanry at Sherborne. The children are to have a holiday tomorrow May 25^th.

Jun 8 - The attendance has not been nearly so good this week, probably owing to its being Whit week.
