Marnhull |

Marnhull is a parish and a large scattered village on the River Stour is two miles North East of Sturminster Newton. It is 3 miles east of Stalbridge and 3 miles north of Sturminster Newton. In clockwise order from the north the parish is adjacent to Fifehead Magdalen, Todber, Margaret Marsh, West Orchard, Hinton St Mary, Sturminster Newton and Stalbridge. The church of St Gregory is in the Early English style and seats 650 persons. The parish registers date from 1559. In the parish there were also Wesleyan, Congregational and Primitive Methodist chapels as well as a Roman Catholic church. |
In the 1890s the parish had two breweries, two maltings, a corn mill and several stone quarries, also a steam butter mill. The soil is clay, sand and rock and used to grow wheat, barley, beans and peas. The area is 3751 acres. A National School was built in 1874 for 200 pupils and a Catholic school for 50 pupils was built in 1880. In 1895 there was a police station with an officer in charge. The population in 1821 was 1274, in 1841, 1309; in 1851, 1480; in 1861, 1444; 1871, 1453; 1881, 1396; 1891, 1415; 1175 in 1931 and 2040 in 2001. |
