WraxallHigher Wraxall & Lower Wraxall |
|
Wraxall is a civil parish consisting of the two
hamlets Higher Wraxall and Lower Wraxall. It is situated in a valley in the chalk hills
of the Dorset Downs, about 11 miles north-west of Dorchester. The origin of the name Wraxall
is thought to be "a nook of land frequented by buzzards".
|
Higher Wraxall is set in a valley of its own up in the hills; there are a
few cottages, a farm and Wraxall Manor House. This fine house was built in the early 17th century,
probably by William Lawrence.
