NOTE:- The register for 1655-1657 in particular is badly faded and the ink has bled into the paper. This coupled with poor handwriting makes it extremely difficult to read so you should consult the original if in doubt. In places the scribe was barely literate and has made identification of surnames and parishes very difficult, I have added nearest known approximation to aid searching but some make no sense at all? The register is held at the Dorset History Center but an image is available on Ancestry.com for those who have membership. Some names may become clearer when we are able to cross reference with other records concerning these individuals. If you can add clarification or knowledge from your own family history please make contact (e-mail address is on the home page)

NOTE:- An Act of Parliament of 29th September 1654, took marriages out of the hands of the Clergy and gave them as a responsibility to the Justices of the Peace. However these Civil Marriages were disapproved by many of the more devout, of which there were many in Dorchester, and such couples might get themselves married by their parish clergy, or even by ejected Anglican Clergymen in which case the ceremonies would not be registered. Also at this time some contiguous parishes were combined for registration purposes to enable them to employ a joint Parish Register (Registrar). On the other hand some marriages at this time and also later were registered in two places -- the parish where they took place, and the parish of residence of one of the parties. During the Interregnum, registration was very laxly carried out, but at the Restoration in 1660 marriage and its registration by the clergy were resumed and entries became more regular. Civil marriages already contracted after market-place banns were legalised and the children of such marriages legitimised.

NOTE:- In the seventeenth century 'Mr.' was a courtesy title for any man of respectable status. In Dorchester as we would expect it never applied to agricultural labourers and not as far as I can tell to husbandmen and rarely to Yeomen. It mainly applied to Gentlemen, or people running a successful trade such as Merchants, Clothiers, Maltsters, etc. 'Mrs' was a courtesy title for women of the status corresponding to that of men addressed as Mr but throughout the seventeenth century applied both to married and unmarried women, and even through the eighteenth century to spinsters of mature age as a mark of respect.

NOTE:- The addition of the initials [HACD] at the end of an entry indicates that an abbreviated entry for it was listed in " The History and Antiquities of the County of Dorset” by John HUTCHINS Published 1860-74"

[Note:- The first known child from this marriage was (1) Katherine who was born at the end of April and baptised at Holy Trinity church in Dorchester on 31 May 1657, she was followed by another daughter (2) Fran, presumably a colloquial form of Frances, baptised at Holy Trinity on 12th May 1661. The remainder of ther children were all baptised at St Peters. (3) Jone baptised St Peters 30th June 1661. There is some doubt about whether this is actually one of their own children both because it follows so closely upon the baptism of Fran and because the fathers name was originally recorded as Edward but the name Thomas added by a later hand. I cannot trace another Thomas Standige living in Dorchester at this time and wondered whether they adopted him. Their remaining children were all then baptised at St Peters possibly indicating a change of residence back to that parish (4) Richard bap St P 22 Oct 1665 (5) James bap St P 17th Nob 1667 (6) John bap St P 20th Jun 1669 (7) Elinor bap St P 12th Jun 1671 ]

[Note:-St Andrew Undershaft is a Church of England church located at St Mary Axe, in Aldgate ward of the City of London, near the Lloyd's Building. It is a rare example of a City church that has managed to escape both the Great Fire of London in 1666 and the Second World War bombing during the London Blitz of 1940-1941.- The church of St Mary the Moore in Exeter (Exon) is better known as St Mary Major]

24 Sep 1655 - William FACIE and Rebecca BOWER

08 Nov 1655 - Mr Thomas HALL of this parish and Mris Elizabeth ROW of Melcome were marryed in Melcome 1655

[Note:- As was traditional Thomas HALL (c1628-1693) a native of Dorchester married his bride Elizabeth ROW (c1630-1681) in her home parish of Melcombe Regis. After marriage they settled in Dorchester where Thomas Hall had his business and set about raising a family of seven children most of which unfortunately appear to have died in infancy. These were:- (1) Frances Hall born on 29th Jan 1657/8 she was baptised at St Peters church in Dorchester on 14th Feb 1657/8. (2) Elizabeth Hall Bap 24 Sep 1659 (3) Thomas Hall bap 13th Oct 1660 buried 7th March 1661/2 (4) Thomas Hall bap 7th May 1662 buried 19th May 1663 (5) Anne Hall bap 17th July 1663 there are two burials the most likely being 16th May 1668, the other 20th Aug 1676. (6) Mary Hall bap 6th Jan 1664/5 buried 7th July 1665 (7) Robert Hall bap 18th Oct 1666 buried 2nd Jan 1666/7.

Thomas HALL (c1630-1693) was elected as a Captial Burgess of Dorchester on the 5th October 1666 and served as its Bailiff for the year 1667/8. He warrants a brief mention in David Underdowns novel 'Fire from Heaven' (page 240) and held his position as a Captial Burgess until he resigned it on 29th September 1676. There is no doubt that he was a trader of some standing in Dorchester as when coinage was in short supply he was one of the traders that issued his own trade token, an example of which can be viewed via this link. Elizabeth is buried at St Peters Church Dorchester on 12th Aug 1681 and Thomas on 20th September 1693]

Mr. John BARTLETT was made the executor of Elizabeth MELLEDGE's Will written 16th May 1687 who was Martha's mother. Martha herself was one of the beneficiaries being left £5 as were two of her mothers grandchildren named as Nathaniel Bartlett and Mitiam Bartlett. A great grandson John Bartlett the son of her grandson Nathaniel was also a beneficiary - See Will of Elizabeth MELLEDGE proved 21st Jun 1687. Children from this marriage :-

26 Dec 1656 - John VIZAR [WINZAR?] and Margaret GIBBONS both of Abbotsbury

30 Dec 1656 - Thomas CHURCHILL of Trinity Parish and Alice COX? [Note:- Surname not clear especially last letter] of this parish

[Note:- Thomas CHURCHILL (1612- aft 1656?) He was the 8th child of John CHURCHILL (c1568-1621) Esq and Eleanor MELLER (c1571-1641). As usual they married in the brides parish of St Peters where records have not survived prior to 1653 so we are unlikely to discover her ancestry. Thomas was left £10 in his mother's Will in 1641. After marriage they lived in his parish of Holy Trinity in Dorchester. The mother Alice CHURCHILL recorded as the wife of Thomas CHURCHILL was buried at Holy Trinity on 9th May 1666. Known children from this marriage:-

    (1) Alice Churchill (1657-1657) Recorded as the daughter of Thomas Churchel, she was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 11th Nov 1657 - Probably a still birth 1 year after marriage as I have not located a baptism.
    (2) Alice Churchill (1658-?) baptised at Holy Trinity Church on 16th Nov 1658 - aged 3 weeks.
    (3) Richard Churchill ( 1661-?) bap HT 31st Mar 1661
    (4) Mary Churchill (1665-1665) bap HT 4th Feb 1665/6 and buried there 7th Feb 1665/6 ]

[Research Notes:- There are two further baptisms which appear to follow on from the above births (Joane bap HT 6th Dec 1668 and Thomas bap HT 21 June 1674) which might suggest that Thomas remarried. I could not locate a marriage but there is a burial record for a Thomas CHURCHILL at Holy Trinity Church on 24th March 1667/8 which raises further issues. We know this Thomas died intestate as a Letter of Administration was granted for the estate of Thomas CHURCHILL of Dorchester in Dorset dated 28th April 1668 (PCC Administrations Folio 60). Administration was granted to a George Hodder and Henry Cuffe who were appointed guardians for the children of the deceased who are named as being Richard, Thomas, and Mary Churchill. Clearly for guardians to be appointed both parents are dead which fits nicely as Alice died in 1666. If this is the same family however we do not know what happened to Alice who is not part of the guardianship, Thomas would have to have been born prior to thier death, not in 1674, and their daughter Mary died in 1665/6 so clearly some unresolved issues.

I have not managed to trace Henry Cuff. George HODDER however had married Mary CLARKE at nearby Stinsford on 5th Jan 1663/4 and had 2 children Mary and Elisabeth baptised in All Saints Parish Dorchester in 1664 and 1666. Only 3 months after the grant for administration of Thomas Churchill's estate George HODDER's daughter Mary was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 31st July 1668 shortly followed by his wife Mary HODDER on 6th Aug 1668. His other daughter Elizabeth also died and was buried at HT on 21st July 1674 after which we loose track of George Hodder. He either died or gave up guardianship as PCC records show that a 2nd grant (PCC Admons Folio 51) was made for administration of Thomas Churchill's estate on 06 May 1678. The entry states 'Grantee and relationship to deceased - Mary, wife of John WING, daughter (former grant Apr 1668)'. This suggests that Thomas's daughter Mary has married John Wing between 1668 and 1678 and has now been granted administration of her farther's estate. If this is correct she must have been an older child that survived and this also points to a different family. I append these notes in case further information comes to light which clarifies the situation]

1665

25 Sep 1665 - Thomas DELACOURT & Margreat [Margaret] COKER 1665 [HACD]
[Note:- The Pedigree of Thomas DELACOURT (1641-1708) Gentleman is given in the Visitation of Dorset for the year 1677; page 17 when his age was given as being 36. . He was the grandson of John DELACOURT of Milton Abbas, his father Thomas DELACOURT Senior having married Anne the daughter of Robert FRAMPTON of Okeford Fitzpayne in Dorset. I have not located his baptism probably because he was born in Milton Abbas around the year 1641 and parish registers only survive from 1651. A Capital Burgess of Dorhester from an early date he was UnderSheriff of Dorset 1665 and 1673; Margaret his wife shown here was Coheiress of Mathew COKER of Dorchester. Thomas was one of the 300 inhabitants of Dorchester who signed the Oath of loyalty to Charles II on 31st Aug 1681; He was first elected Bailiff of Dorchester in 1690 but re-elected in each of the years 1693, 1694, 1701 and 1705, and Mayor of Dorchester in 1692 and 1708. Because John Gould had recently died, he was made an Alderman of Dorchester on 26th Sep 1707. Mayo says 24th Sept 1708 Thomas Delacourt Mayor died this day & Thomas Seward chosen in his place till the new election - also See also his Will dated 18 Aug 1708, proved on 06 Nov 1708 ].

20 Feb 1665/6 - Mr. Maximilian [Maximeilien; Maximilien] GALOP [GOLLOP] & Mary POULDAN [POULSDEN]

[Note:- The Pedigree of Maximilian GOLLOP [GALLOP] Senior (1638-1719) is given in the Visitation of Dorset for the year 1677; page 32 --although it incorrectly ascribes his 3rd marriage to Elizabeth Haviland to his son: Maximilian GOLLOP was baptised at Botherhampton on 24th Nov 1638 the son of John GALLOP of North Borwood and of Netherbury by his wife Elizabeth the daughter of Maximilian Mohun of Fleet in Dorset. Maximillian Gollop was a woollen draper by trade and elected Governor of the Company of Freemen of Dorchester in 1679, also serving as Bailiff of Dorchester in 1688/9; 1691/2 and again in 1704/5. He first became Mayor of Dorchester in 1690 and was elected again in 1703. He was also a Capital Burgess of the town holding a 99 year lease on a tenement in St Peters Parish. He was elected Alderman of Dorchester from 1697 until his death in 1719. Mary GOLLOP his 1st wife was a beneficiary under her fathers will when he died and was buried at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 20th Feb 1673/4. Mary herself was buried at St Peters on 12th Oct 1677. As neither of their daughters Mary and Elizabeth are mentioned in their fathers Will of 1719 I assume they died. There is however mention of a grandson John HOSKINS who presumably descends from one of them.

He marries here in 1665 to his first wife' Mary' the daughter of William POULSDEN of Dorchester. They had 5 children baptised at St Peters in Dorchester:-
    (1) Mary Gollop bap 30th May 1666;
    (2) Maximilian Gollop (1668-1709) the younger bap 5th Mar 1668/9
pre-deceased his father being buried as 'Maximilian the younger' at St Peters on 23rd June 1709.
    (3) Elizabeth Gollop bap 23rd Mar 1670/1
    (4) Martha Gollop bap 11 Sep 1672, married a Mr WHITE who had died by 1719 when Martha WHITE his daughter was a beneficiary under her fathers will.
    (5) Charity Gollop (1674-1704) bap 4th Mar 1674/5 who was buried still a spinster on 23rd Jan 1704/5.

Although I have not been able to locate a marriage registration, Maximilian married a second time around 1682, to a 'Jane' and had 2 children as shown below. His 2nd wife Jane GOLLOP was buried at StP on 16th Oct 1694.
    (6) John Gollop (1683-1684) baptised at St Peters on 3rd July 1683. Unfortunately John died and was buried there on 27th Aug 1684 but was followed by a daughter:-
    (7) Jane Gollop named after his 2nd wife, who was baptised at St Peters on 2nd Dec 1684. She survived to be a beneficiary under the will dated 11th Aug 1718 and proved 08 Dec 1718 of Dorothy Turner when she received £200. She was also a beneficiary under her fathers will in 1719.

He married for a third time to Elizabeth HAVILAND on 6th Oct 1696 at Stinsford and she is appointed executrix of his will dated 11th May 1719. Maximilian GOLLOP was buried at the age of 81 at St Peters on 21st July 1719 and his Will proved by Elizabeth on the 24th August.]

1666

05 July 1666 - Lammas WIEST [WEST] & MARY DOUCH

[Note:- Lammas is a very unusual Christian name the origin of which seems to be a matter of some debate. The WEST Family appear to have arrived in Dorchester a few years before this marriage the only other earlier reference being another marriage of an Elizabeth WEST in 1633. There are no other families with this surname in Dorchester at this date raising the possibility that she was related. It's possible that Lammas and Elizabeth, who married in Holy Trinity church Dorchester to John Caswell on 13th Nov 1633 , were both children of a John & Elizabeth West as a Mrs Elizabeth WEST the wife of Mr. John WEST was buried at St Peters on 6th Dec 1672. The use of 'Mr.' before the name meant that the family were of respectable status, probably traders.

After marriage Lammas & Mary had the following children born in Dorchester:- (1) A still born male child buried unnamed 6th Jan 1667/8 (2) William West bap 17 July 1669 buried 21 Jan 1669 (3) Mary West bap 30 Apr 1670, buried 24 May 1670 (4) Mary West bap 18 Oct 1671 (5) Elizabeth West bap 6th jan 1673/4 buried 25 May 1675 (6) Alice West bap 5th Mar 1675/6 (7) Martha West bap 1st Aug 1678 (9) Lammas West (1680-1705) bap 24 Nov 1680, he married at the age of 22 at St Peters in Dorchester to Marey CHEEP and was buried at St Peters on 1st Apr 1705. (10) Robert West bap 4th July 1683 & buried 27th Mar 1684 (11) Constance West bap 2nd Jun 1686 buried 10 Feb 1686/7]. Lammas was buried at St Peters on 28th Dec 1707.]

[Note:- Thomas PAUL Junior (1655-1714) was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 18th Nov 1655 the 2nd of five known children from the marriage of Thomas PAUL to Marie (Unknown). His mother Marie was buried at All Saints church in Dorchester on 6th April 1679. His father Thomas PAUL Senior was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 16th March 1687/8.

Thomas Paul Junior had an elder brother James (1653-1695) baptised at Holy Trinity on 29 Jan 1653 who became a mariner on HMS Royal Victory and left a will dated 9 Jan 1692 in which he named his brother Thomas PAUL of Dorchester as the sole beneficiary and executor. Thomas had the will proved in London on 8th May 1695. They also had a younger sister Mary baptised at Holy Trinity Church on 13 Nov 1657 before their parents moved to live in St Peters Parish circa 1659. Another brother named John PAUL was baptised at St Peters Church on 12th Feb 1659/60. Unfortunately he died an infant and was buried back at Holy Trinity on 21st Mar 1660/1. Another sibling Elizabeth was bap at St Peters on 14th May 1665.

Thomas PAUL Junior was buried at Holy Trinity Church on 13th March 1714/15. His widow Mary PAUL nee CONEY was also buried at HT on 18th Mar 1747/8

[Note:- As far as I can see Robert was the only child from the marriage of Robert LEMMON from the parish of Pulham in Dorset to Mary BISHOP of Dorchester which took place at All Saints Church Dorchester on 24th May 1655. Robert was buried 25th Dec 1725; Tamsen left a Will dated 26 May 1729; she was buried 1st May 1730; Her will was proved 3rd Sep 1731 from which it is clear that Robert was a Cooper by trade and they Tamsen ran a shop in Dorchester. They had the following children baptised at St Peters Church in Dorchester (1) Mary bap 19th Aug 1683; she married William FREAK at St Peters on 6th May 1706 and is left 1 shilling in Tamsen's will of 1729. (6) Martha bap 22 Oct 1694 not mentioned in the will so assume died but no trace of burial (7) Thomas bap 21 Mar 1696/7 and is left 1 shilling in Tamsen's will of 1729. (8) Elizabeth bap 23 Dec 1701 and is named as the main beneficiary and executrix in her mother Tamsen's will of 1729. Note:- The derisory sum of one shilling was usually left in wills to show that they had been considered and prevent the will from being contested by kin that on the face of it might have been entitled to a share. This is not a slight and usually means they have already received support from the parents. Mary for example would have had her inheritance on her marriage to William FREAK and the boys probably set up in business.]

26 Oct 1717 - Geo [George] BARTLET [BARTLETT] and Ebett [Eabey] FFURMAGE [FURMAGE]

George Bartlett (1687-1731) had been baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 11th Sep 1687 the son of John BARTLET & Margreat HOSKINGS who had married at All Saints on 22 April 1679. George had a previous marriage to Alice HUTCHINS (1690-1711) from whom he had a son who only lived for 6 months. Follow link provided for more background.

Ebett is a colloquial form of Elizabeth. After marriage they lived in All Saints Parish where the 3 children shown below were baptised. A Letter of Administration for the estate of George Bartlet a shoemaker of Dorchester granted to Ebett Bartlett his widow and relict on 9th Oct 1731. The John BARTLETT Maltster of Dorchester who was also bound with her was her husbands elder brother. John was buried at All Saints Church Dorchester on 7th Jan 1753 and left a Will dated 10th Aug 1752 which was proved 18th Jan 1755. John's daughter Elizabeth BARTLETT (1710-1750) also acted as one of the witnesses on the Letter of Administration. Eabey BARTLETT was left 5 shillings in the Will of James HIDE written on 14th Nov 1738 and proved 9th Mar 1747. Ebett BARTLETT nee FURMAGE (bur.1767) recorded as a widow was buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 27th Aug 1767: Children from this marriage:-

    (1) John Bartlett (1718 - ?) bap All Saints Church Dorchester 19th Aug 1718: When his father died in 1731 his mother was given administration of his fathers estate which included his business as a shoemaker and John then aged 13 would probably have already been learning the trade as Apprentice to his father from around the age of 10. An Appreticeship usually lasted a minimum of 7 years so its not suprising to find that aged 17 when qualified and formally able to take over the running of his fathers business he married at All Saints Church on 9th Oct 1735 to Elizabeth NORAS [NORRIS] (bur.?) Follow link for more information about his marriage and son.

    (2) Barbaroah [Barbara also known as Barbary] Bartlett (1720 - 1777) bap All Saints 13th Sep 1720 ; Barbara, by then described as being from Holy Trinity Church in Dorrchester, married on 23rd May 1743 at St Peters Church in Dorchester to Thomas BRIDLE (Bur 1756) from the parish of of Warmwell. Thomas was the son of Richard BRIDLE by his wife Hester and baptised in the Parish of Stratton on Easter Tuesday 1719 [i.e. The Tuesday after Eatser Sunday which was April 9th - I have corrected the date given on ancestry.com]. They had no children and Thomas was buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 6th Aug 1755. Barbara BRIDLE nee BARTLETT then remarried to John KING from St Peters Parish at All Saints on 4th Oct 1756 and they had 3 children before she was buried at All Saints Church as Barbary wife of John KING on 15th June 1777.

24 Feb 1717/8 - Henery [Henry] LAKE of Salisbury and Avis ALDER of Dorchester

[Note:-When they married Henry LAKE (1693-1746) is described as being of Salisbury in Wiltshire. His bride was Avis ALDER (bur.1768) the daughter of Robert ALDER (1665-1746) described in his Will as Bailiff of Dorchester although I can find no official appointment as such. After marriage Henry & Avis settled to live in Holy Trinity Parish and were living in a house owned by Dennis BOND when the burgage rate was assessed in 1737. Her father Robert was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 18th April 1746 and a Letter of Administration for his estate was granted on 1st June 1746 to Avis LAKE 'his natural and lawful daughter and the wife of Henry LAKE a joiner (i.e. carpenter) of Dorchester'. 28 July 1729 - Ambrose HUNT of Fordington & Mary SPARKS of Dorchester

Note:- Ambrose HUNT VII (1708- ?) was the son of Ambrose HUNT VI (1681-1754) married Margaret ROGERS. This is his first marriage and there is no record of any baptisms of children in Dorchester or Fordington before Mary dies and is buried at FStG on 8th May 1741. Ambrose remarried to Elizabeth BARTLETT at St Georges Church in Fordington on 1st Jan 1742/3. There is then a baptism of a son Ambrose HUNT VIII (1742/3- ?) the son of Ambrose and Mary HUNT at FStG 16th Mar 1742/3. As this is only 3 months after his marriage this would mean the baby was conceived on or before June 1742. We either have a very late baptism from his first marriage or this was the reason for his 2nd marriage and the parish clerk made a mistake in recording the mothers Christian name. I have assumed the latter. Their son later married Sarah NORRIS at FStG Church on 15th Aug 1762. Mary died and was buried at FStG on 8th May 1741
