Fordington

Notes:- Some Latin words or phrases are still in use. e.g. "Eodem die" meaning "the same day" which has been abbreviated here sometimes to" e/d” or "eod die”. Also "i” and "j” in Latin are interchangeable so there are examples of "iun” as an abbreviation for junior. Also "vidua” meaning widow. 

It should be noted that Jone is a variant of Joan and much more common than Jane pre 1650 but it is often very difficult to tell the difference in old faded or damaged documents

The Christian name of Hamnet is a diminutive of the earlier Hamo which was common after the conquest and came to be used independently. Another diminutive of Hamo is Hamlet. It became established in some families and carried down through the generations.

[Note:- Her father Philip BUNN's will dated 29 Sep 1662 has been transcribed and names as beneficiaries his wife a Jone (or Joane) Bunn and his daughters by then called Ann Moores and Mary Froome (or Fone). Records are missing for Fordington for the period 1640-1663 inc and they are likely to have married in the mid 1650's as 25 years old was the average age of marriage at this date for women of their status. Joane the mother does not appear to have died until 1667, although as explained records prior to 1664 have not survived. The entry in St Georges burial register states " Joane BUNNE widow was buryed November the 24 1667". Mary Froome sought a Letter of administration over the estate of her father in 1662 which suggests her mother was not capable of carrying it out. Ann and Mary also had at least one brother:- Richard Bun was baptised in Fordington on 15th April 1638 but was also buried there 10th November the same year. ]

NOTE:- With records being fragmentary its difficult to be sure of anything but I think her name was 'ANN' not 'AGNES'. First there is only one prior baptism with this surname in Fordington which occurred on 14th November 1608 when an Anne the daughter of Christopher WATTE was baptised there. If this is her she would be 23 years old. I cannot trace any other reference to the Watts family at this time so Ann/Agnes may well have had no family available for support by 1631/2. There are then four entries in the Quarter Sessions Order Books that appear to relate to this illegitimate birth. It first comes to the Court's attention at Bridport Sessions held 4th to 6th Oct 1631 just over 3 months prior to this baptism. Where a single woman fell pregnant, had settlement in the parish, and had no means of support she would have been subject to a barstardy examination by the Overseers of the Poor for the parish during which she would have had to disclose the name of the father. In this case the Overseers latched onto Thomas HUNT as the culprit and looked to him to defray the cost of her lying in, birth and maintenance of the child. So the timing is about right. At the Bridport sessions the case was deferred and I suspect that this was to wait and see whether the child survived and ongoing support applicable. The next sessions were at Blandford and held between the 10th and 13th of January so ended the day before he was baptised so its not surprising to find the case deferred again.

The case then came for trial at the Sherborne sessions held between 10th & 12th April 1632 by which time it was clear that the child would live and need maintenance. Court records state:- " Thomas HUNT of Fordington, husbandman, had been ordered to pay 12d per week for the maintenance of the bastard child of Ann WATTS of Fordington. He now appeals, and says the father is Thomas TIZAR of Fordington husbandman. The Court orders that the appeal shall be heard at the next sessions, and TIZAR is to appear 'with such proofs as he hath or can get in defence of himself'.

At the next sessions at Shaston 3rd to 5th July 1632 they both appear before the court and following evidence given by Ann WATTS concerning the time of the birth and which of the two was responsible that Thomas TIZAR is the real father. they rule however that "As both men had carnal knowledge, they are ordered to contribute 6d per week each and give security to discharge the Parish of Fordington. Thomas HUNT's bond to the overseers of Fordington is cancelled."
