Note:- Word of caution, these records were extracted for investigation because they each gave their place of birth as Dorchester in Dorset. In fact many have proved to come from surrounding parishes and may have simply enlisted at Dorchester, or given Dorchester as the nearest large town. In some cases there may be an indication as to which parish they came from such as "Upwey, Dorchester Dorset" but even this may not be strictly accurate. For early records the vast majority were illiterate and by the time they enlisted or were examined could only remember where they grew up rather than where they were born. Added to this they often lied about thier age by one or two years in order to be eligible for the bounty on joining. The information given below is only from the index and more information can probably be obtained by consulting WO97 and WO116 at the National Archives. Where I have been able to clearly identify individuals as coming from another parish I have deleted the word Richard AMEY [Link to Military Service Records File File for more information]

He has 3 siblings all born in Fordington. Curiously he was actually baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester by the Rev Thomas Sanctuary the Rector of Powerstock, but the baptism is not recorded at Holy Trinity but entered into the parish register at Powerstock on 2nd July 1876 with a side line entry in a different hand explaining that it took place in Dorchester. [Link to transcription in Strays File] Thomas Iona Gale gave his families abode as Powerstock so presumably they were living in the parish while he was temporarily working there. His sister Harriett Kate GALE was baptised at Christchurch West Fordington on 25th Jan 1880 and his younger brother Frederick Arthur Gale baptised there on 13th Feb 1881.
