[Note:- Joseph GAWLER (1766-1822) was a widower. His first marriage was to Maria SAMPSON in her parish church of St George in Fordington on 15th Jan 1795 (Follow link for information about his 1st marriage and children) Maria died and was buried at FStG on 9th Apr 1801. His 2nd wife Ann GAWLER nee KEATS (1782-1820) gave him 11 children before being buried at All Sts on 12th July 1820 aged 38 years making her aged 19 when she married. Joseph GAWLER senior died aged 57 and was buried at All Sts on 29th Mar 1822. Children from this marriage:-

[Note:- James CHAFFEY (1768-1843) was the 2nd child from the marriage of James CHAFFEY the Younger (1740-1775) to Ann HAYDON at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 1st Apr 1764. Follow link provided for more background. On the 22nd July 1794 he was made a Freeman of Dorchester and on the same day elected as a Capital Burgess. In 1796 he was elected as Mayor of Dorchester, a position his grandfather James CHAFFEY Senior (c1711-1782)J had held on 3 separate occasions. His Uncle, Batt CHAFFEY Senior (1749-1812) died in 1812 leaving a Will under which James inherited a 5th of his estate. In the Will he is referred to as a Joiner and Cabinet maker but baptisms of his last 6 childrn refer to him mainly as a coachbuilder (1814 to 1825) still living in All Saints Parish in Dorchester. By 1841 however he had retired and this presaged a fall in circumstances as they moved to live in Mill Street in Fordington where James is still descibed as being a Joiner aged 70/74 and his wife Ann aged 60/64 a Schoolmistress. James CHAFFEY (1768-1843) died and was buried there aged 75 on 5th June 1843. He was joined by his widow Ann CHAFFEY nee HOOPER (1777-1850)

(6) Martha CHAFFEY (1817-1855) bap All Saints Church Dorchester 21st Oct 1817; C1841 age 20/24; C1851 still at Mill Street aged 32, an Imbecile, with her 2 younger sisters and Alfreda her neice by her sister Florence; Martha died at the young age of 37 being buried at FStG on 24th Feb 1855 and of course was living in the area so badly affected by cholera at the end of 1854.

(7) Elizabeth CHAFFEY (1820-1828) bap All Saints Church Dorchester 14th Jun 1823 recorded as 3 years old and buried there aged 19 years on 7th Feb 1828

(8) Florence CHAFFEY (1821-1864) bap All Saints Church Dorchester 14th Jun 1823 recorded as 2 years old. Florence had an illegitimate daughter Elfrida {Alfreda] Adelaide CHAFFEY (1843-1885) bap at FStG on 19th July 1843. In the 1851 Census she is unmarried aged 27 a dressmaker and living in Mill Street with her daughter Alfrida aged 7 and her elder sister Martha. Florence had another illegitimate daughter Mary CHAFFEY who was privately baptised in Mill Street on 3rd Jan 1857 by Rev. Henry Moule. Her daughter Mary was later recorded as 'being received into the church' on 11th Sep 1862 by which time she was already seriously ill. She died and was buried at the Civic Cemetery at Dorchester aged 5 years on 26th Sep 1862. Returning to the 1861 Census, Florence was then recorded as unmarried, aged 37, and now head of the household as her elder sister Martha died in 1855. She is with her daughter Alfreda aged 17 and Mary Chaffey aged 4 already referred to. Her daughter Alfreda also had an illegitimate daughter Flora Mary Chaffey privately baptised at Mill Street on 7th Dec 1863 who was formally received into the church on 12th Oct 1865. Flora Mary was later generally known simply as Mary. Florence CHAFFEY died at the age of 42 still living in Mill Street being buried at FStG on 2nd June 1864. Alfreda Adelaide CHAFFEY married William FRY on 9th June 1872 at Melcombe Regis (Follow link for more information)

John McMAHON ( alias CREE) (1780-1853) was born in Dublin and baptised in St Peter's Church of Ireland on 28th June 1780. He was in the Army from 1799 to 1805 and more information about his background is available on 'The Cree Genealogy Website' from which it will also be seen that he came into possession of the impressive mansion Thornhill House and raised a family of 7 children with Ann who were baptised at Stalbridge. In 1828 the family moved to live at Moignes Court Owermoigne. They both died there, John at the age of 73 on 11th July 1853 and Ann aged 80 on 30th July 1870]

[Note:- After their marriage Thomas Rogers (1778-1841), who was a carpenter by trade, & his wife Rebecca nee Foster (1780-1840) had a son, (1) James Rogers bap Fordington 26 Sep 1806; then a daughter (2) Mary Rogers bap Fordington 6 Feb 1809 (who died and was buried Fordington 6th Feb 1809); and a 2nd daughter renamed (3) Mary Rogers bap Fordington 26 Dec 1809. This Mary went on to marry Robert F Jaynes a joiner journeyman from Tewksbury in All Saints Dorchester on 23 April 1832. Mary and her family are in the 1851 census by which time they have 5 children Martha (1836) Sarah (1841) Matilda (1845) Louisa (1846) and Frederick (1850). They are said to have emigrated to Kentucky Paris, Bourbon county in America in the mid 1850's. Thomas & Rebecca's next child was (4) Susannah Rogers bap 23 Aug 1813 (buried aged 6 months 31st Aug 1813); Then (5) Thomas Rogers junior bap Fordington 29 Nov 1814; followed by (6) John Rogers bap 23 Jan 1818 all bap Fordington --who later went on become a master cabinet maker working from 37 High West Street. The family then all moved to All Saints parish in Dorchester where their last child (7) Eliza Rogers was baptised 8th April 1821.Rebecca his wife was buried at Fordington on 6th Nov 1840 aged 60 followed by her husband Thomas on 18th March 1841 aged 63. In the 1841 Census taken on 6th June that year apart from Mary who was already married the other 4 surviving children were all still single and living together in Bell lane All Saints, James a carpenter journeyman like has father before him; Thomas was a tailor; John a cabinet maker and Eliza a dress maker]

[Note:- George WARREN alias CHURCHILL (1791-1846) was the illegitimate son of Mary WARREN and baptised at Holy Trinity Church on 13th March 1791. By 1814 he was also regularly using the surname CHURCHILL which in all probability was the surname of his father, hence the alias. He marries here to Elizabeth LEGG (1788-1857) who was the daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth LEGG and had been baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 6th Jan 1788. In 1819 they moved from All Saints to Fordington and he had his son and heir George Warren re-baptised as George Churchill. All subsequent children were given the Churchill surname. In the June 1841 Census they were living at South Back Street in Holy Trinity Parish when George is recorded as a Labourer but when his daughter Elizabeth marries later that year in October he is described as 'Sexton' of Holy Trinity Parish, a position he retained until his death. He was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 27th Sep 1846 when his age was given as 53. In 1851 his widow Elizabeth is living in Trinity Street in Holy Trinity Parish with her eldest son George & his family. Elizabeth was buried in the Civic Cemetery on 15th Apr 1857 aged 69. George & Elizabeth's children were:-

(1) Mary Anne Warren (b.1815) bap at All Saints Church Dorchester 14 May 1815; Probably the Mary Ann Churchill who married to William FOOKS at HT on 7th Aug 1836
(2) George Warren (1817- 1872) bap All Saints Church Dorchester on 13 Feb 1817 and baptised again after their move to live in Fordington as George Churchill on 28 Mar 1819; In the June 1841 Census age given as between 20-24. He married Caroline MARSH at HT on 10th Feb 1843, took over the role of Sexton of Ht in 1846 from his father and was buried at the Civic Cemetery aged 55 on 26th Feb 1872.
(3) Elizabeth Churchill (b.1820) - Bap St Georges Church Fordington on 2nd Jan 1820 ;In the June 1841 Census her age is given as being between 15-19. She married Henry Beasant MEADER at HT on 10th Oct 1841.
(4) John Churchill (1822 - 1896?) - Bap St Georges Church Fordington on 9th June 1822. In 1841 age given as 14 ; John married Elizabeth COX at Evershot on 02 Feb 1845.
(5) Maria Churchill (b.1824) - Bap St Georges Church Fordington on 10th Oct 1824;In 1841 age given as 12. She became a domestic servant but in 1851 aged 25 she was unemployed and living with her mother and eldest brother. She married an agricultural labourer Abraham Tompkins at Evershot on 28th Nov 1852 where they settled to raise a family.
(6) Henry Churchill (1827-1858) Bap St Georges Church Fordington on 21st Jan 1827 - In 1841 age given as 11. By 1851 he is described as single and a jouneyman tailor by trade. He married Eliza LOVELESS at Piddletrenthide on 26th Dec 1853. Henry died of Phthsis 23rd Mar 1858 at Thirthall Place Holy Trinity Dorchester
(7) Eliza Warren alias Churchill (b.1833) Bap Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 28 Nov 1830; In the 1841 Census age given as 8. She married 12 Feb 1854 to Joseph Sir Richard WYATT at HT.

[Note: John James Besant Sn (1787-1819) was baptised at St Peter's Church Dorchester 10 Jan 1787 the 5th child from the marriage of James Miller Besant (1741-1792) to Sarah Gatehouse at St John the Baptist Church in North Cheriton Somerset in 1777. Susan [Susannah] MOWLAM (1791-1872) was baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 25 Feb 1791 the 2nd child from the marriage of Henry MOWLAND [MOWLAM] of West Orchard to Elizabeth HEWSTINS of the parish of All Saints in Dorchester who married by Licence 5 Nov 1786. They moved to live in Holy Trinity Parish in Dorchester within the tything of Froome Whitfield where John James ( recorded simply as John BESANT ) was buried on 31st January 1819, when his age was given as 34. Susan lived to be 81 and died on 14th May 1872 at Dorchester leaving an estate of just under £600 to her son John described as a brewer. Children from this marriage

(1) Sarah Elizabeth Besant (1814-1879) bap All Saints Church Dorchester 28th Aug 1814. She married to Captain Thomas Henry Gatehouse BESANT at All Saints on 7th May 1849
(2) John James Besant (1818-1873) bap All Saints Church Dorchester 1st Aug 1819. He married Sophia Hayes ELDRIDGE at All Saints Church on 1st Oct 1851. Sole executor of his mothers will in 1872 and a brewer by trade.
(3) Henry Francis Mowlam Besant (1819-1893) bap All Saints Church Dorchester 1st Aug 1819. He married Amelia BEDLOE at St Georges Church in Fordington on 24th Feb 1852.

[Note:- William BRYER (1793 - 1874) He was baptised at All Sts on 16th Oct 1793 the son of William & Susanna BRYER. He is listed as a Schoolmaster in High East Street Dorchester in Roberts Street Directory of 1839. Also in June 1841 Census living near the churchyard at High West St, Holy Trinity Parish age 45/49 with Ann age 40/44; Also in Pigots St Directory 1844; and 1851C at Trinity St Age 58 : 1861 Census Trinity Churchyard aged 68 a Schoolmaster with wife Ann age 62 both born Dorchester. 1871C at Charity school trinity Churchyard Schoolmaster age 77, Ann age 71 : William BRYER was buried at the Civic Cemetery on 17th Feb 1874 aged 80 years and Ann joined him aged 75 on 1st Dec 1874. [Note:- William RUSSELL (1798-1883) was baptised at Stinsford Dorset on 18th Nov 1798 the son of James Rusell (1772-1840) and Anne SQUIBB (1776-1837). Elizabeth Ann BARTLETT (1802-1887) had been baptised at Melcombe Regis on 17th Jan 1802 the daughter of Samuel BARTLETT by his wife Maria DAVIS (1781-1858). Samuel was a native of Melcombe Regis and had married at Wimborne Minster in 1805 to Maria so I am not aware of any prior connection with existing Bartlett Families already living in Dorchester or Fordington. After marriage they lived in Dorchester attending the Independent Non Conformist Chapel in Durngate Street, but by 1829 were living in Melcombe Regis where William was an Inspector of Weights and Measures. Note:- Philip PEARCE (1794 - 1871) was baptised at Sherborne in Dorset on 10th May 1794 the son of a perfumer by trade called Daniel PEARCE by his wife Ann nee WILTON who had married at Sherborne on 12th Oct 1790. His bride Eliza was baptised at All Saints church in Dorchester on 7th March 1803 the daughter of Thomas and Ann WHITTLE. Her father Thomas WHITTLE (1771-1838) was landlord of the Crown Inn in Dorchester from 1829 to his death in 1838. Philip described above as from Sherborne married Elizabeth (Eliza) WHITTLE in her parish church of All Saints in Dorchester on 12th Oct 1820. They returned after marriage to live in Sherborne where Philip was employed as a printer and their first 3 children were all baptised as shown below before they moved in 1827 to permanently live in Fordington in 'Cuckholds Row'


(Note:- Source: Dorset County Chronicle Thur 20 Mar 1834- Page 3 - Philip Pearce, along with his adjoining neigbour John ANSTY a baker, gave evidence in a criminal case in support of Maria Stroud who had been charged with receiving stolen goods , it states:- "Philip PEARCE, who has lived in the parish of Fordington 7 years, also spoke in favour of the prisoner).

Their 4th child Alfred Pearce was duly baptised in St Georges Church on 4th Oct 1829. By 1839 Philip's name appears in 'Roberts Directory' for Dorchester where it gives him as the landlord of the 'Union Arms' in Fordington. The 'Union Arms', like most of the dwellings that surrounded it at that time had a thatched roof, and was destroyed by fire on 2nd September 1841 when the adjoining bakery owned by John ANSTY caught fire and the flames quickly spread to destroy 23 houses and other buildings in Cuckold's Row. This catastrophe was reported in the Dorchester Chronicle for Thurs 9th Sep 1841.I have placed a transcription of their account separately on this site (follow link provided) and attempted to identify all the people referred to in the 1841 Census which was taken only 3 months prior to the fire on 6th June 1841.

As will be seen from the 1841 Census Philip's age was placed in the age band 45-49 which was correct as he was then 47 years old. Eliza was placed in the 35-39 age band also correct as she was baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester as Eliza WHITTLE with her sister Amelia on 7th March 1803. They were the daughters of Thomas and Ann WHITTLE who are shown as witnesses above at Eliza's wedding. In the C1851 Philip Printer Compositor aged 57 whilst Eliza aged 50 is now running the 'Union Ams' as recorded as a victualler: C1861 'Union Arms' age 67 Victualler with son Francis: C1871 Fordington High street age 76 Printer Compositor, Eliza age 70 no occupation

Philip PEARCE the Elder died at thier residence in Fordington High Street at the age of 78 and was buried at St Georges Church on 29th Dec 1871. His widow Eliza PEARCE nee WHITTLE (1801-1879) also died 1st Oct 1879 when she was 78 leaving a Will and was interred at St Georges with her hisband on 4th Oct 1879 Link to Probate Calendar proved 8th Mar 1881 Estate under £4,000]

He left a Will with a codicil proved by his widow and his brother Philip at Blandford on 26th Nov 1875.

(2) Francis William Bower Pearce (1822 - 1915) born 22nd Aug 1822 and bapt Sherborne 11th Sep 1822 son of Philip & Eliz^th Pearce; C1851 Cuckold Row unmarried age 27 occupation brewer; C1861 age 37 a tailor. C1871 Fordington High Street age 48 unmarried ; Died 17th Oct 1915 aged 95 years at 1 Fordington Hill Buried 19th Oct 1915 St Georges Church Fordington.

(3) Philip Pearce (1824 - 1892) bapt Sherborne 10th Nov 1824 son of Philip & Eliza Pearce; C1851 unmarried age 25 occ attoorney's clerk C1861 Fordington Mill a widower age 36 a Solicitors Clerk: C1871 Philip age 46 unmarried Solicitors Clerk:Died 16th June 1892 leaving a will proved 27th July by his brother Francis and an estate of £10,801. 12. 7d

(4) Alfred Pearce (1829 - 1909 ) bapt St Georges Church Fordington 4th Oct 1829 son of Philip & Eliza Pearce. C 1871 Fordington High St age 41 Accountant; Buried St Georges Church Fordington 1st Jan 1909 aged 79.

[Note:- Mary Oakley was the 4th child from the marriage of Francis Oakley (1761-1821) and Mary Coombs who married at St Peters Church Dorchester on 18th June 1786. In the 1861 Francis INGRAM (1826-1862) was a solicitor and operated from 44 South Street from before 1830 (his name recurs in all the street directories) and he was still there with Mary in the 1861 Cenus. He was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 19th May 1864 aged 67 followed by Mary aged 68 on 8th Dec 1854]

Note:- George SLADE (1800-1865) was the 3rd child from the marriage of Thomas SLADE (1767-1840), a Stone Mason by trade, to Mary LOCK (1770-1842) who married at Upwey in Dorset on 27th May 1792. had two children by his first wife Elizabeth nee BISHOP (1799-1828) that he married here before she died at the young age of 28 and was buried at All Saints Church on 28th Jan 1827. The children were both baptised at the Presbyterian Chapel in Pease Lane Dorchester (1) Elizabeth Mary SLADE born on 6th Nov 1823 was baptised there on 29th March and living with her father and ste mother aged 15/19 in June 1841. (2) Francis Lock SLADE(1825-1828) born on 6th Nov 1825 was baptised there on 30th Dec 1825 and buried there aged 2 years on 17th Feb 1828. With two young children to look after he quickly remarried in the brides parish of Lyme Regis in Dorset where he was a sojourner, to Mary TAYLOR a spinster on 4th Dec 1827 and they returned to Dorchester to live. [Note:- Sarah GALPIN is the daughter of Elias GALPIN (1756-1846) Brewer and Maltster by his third wife Elizabeth nee Moors. She was baptised at All Saints church on 7th Jan 1807 and was therefore 19 years old and eight months pregnant when she married - Link to more information about her family. Children from the marriage:- (1) William bap AS 23 Feb 1826; (2) George bap AS 9th Aug 1829; (3) Elizabeth bap Charminster 15th Sep 1832. In 1851 she is 19, unmarried and working as a drapers assitant for Edward Steel in High West Street Dorchester. (4) Mary Ann bap AS 12 May 1833. All four of these children are beneficiaries under the will of Sharah's brother Robert Galpin in 1859]

[Note:- Charles Curme (1801-1855) was the son of Thomas CURME by his wife Jane nee Fouracres who had married at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 04 Mar 1798. Charles was baptised at bap HT 22nd Nov 1801. Mary Ann Kirkwood was the daughter of John and Hester Kirkwood and born 4th May and bap 25th May 1804 George St Independant Church in Croydon Surrey. After marriage they lived in West Back Street in his parish of Holy Trinity where he worked as an appraiser and builder. In 1832 he moved to Radipole in Dorset trading as a merchant and by 1835 was living in Melcombe Regis. By 1840 he was back living in Dorchester in High West Street working as a bank cashier. He was buried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 17th March 1855 aged 53 but gave his abode as Weymouth. Mary Ann Curme nee Kirkwood (1804-1873) was living in Rosemary St Milborne Port Somerset in 1871 ; buried at Milborne Port on 22nd Dec 1873 aged 69 years. They appear to have had abou 13 children of which I have given details of the first 10 below:-

(1) Charles Thomas Curme (1827-1892) bap Holy Trinity Church Dorchester 21 Sep 1827; he joined the Royal Navy on 6th Oct 1847 and was a Commander, single aged 34 in 1861 on board HMS Algiers; Made a Captain 16th Feb 1864; Flag Captain / Chief of Staff The Nore Jan 1875- Feb 1876; Captain of Devonport Dockyard Steam Reserve from January 1877 to January 1880; Made a Rear Admiral RN 1st Jan 1880; Vice Admiral 9th Mar 1886. He married to Emma Wright at Portsea Island 3rd qtr 1871 but had no children;. He died 19th Feb 1892 leaving an estate of £9378 probate granted 13th April to Emma his widow and Decimus Curme a surgeon.

(2) Mary Ann Jane Curme (1828-1904) bap HT 30 Aug 1828 ; aged 12 in 1841 Census; Unmarried Needlewoman with parents Hackney 1851; unmarried housekeeper with widowed mother Milborne Port Somerset 1871 aged 42; unmarried schoolmistress 1881 living East St Milborne Port with sister Esther Rosa..- Still both there 1891 and 1901; Died 24 Jan 1904 Heathcot Sherborne Dorset, still a spinster probate to Henry Hugh Ensor Clerk Attorney for Olivia Priscilla Ensor (her sister) Effects £674

(3) Francis John Acres Curme (1829- 1894) bap HT 01 Oct 1829 ; aged 11 in 1841;Became an accountant and was living in Charminster unmarried in 1871; unmarried Solicitors Clerk Charminster 1881;Living with his sister & brother-in-law Robert H Ensor at Milborne Port Somerset 1891 aged 61; He died 1st qtr 1894 in the district of Wincanton Somerset.

(4) George Kirkwood Curme (1831-1852) bap HT 10 Feb 1831 ; aged 10 in 1841; As a young man he was a medical student - aged 20 in 1851 st St George Bloomsbury London. He died in the 3rd qtr 1852 in the London district of Kensington

(5) Esther Rosa Curme (1832-1910) bap Radipole Dorset 4th Sep 1832; aged 8 in 1841 Census; incorrectly named Esther Cora in 1851 Hackney Middlesex, a teacher ; Unmarried aged 38 Schoolmistress 1871 Milborne Port Somerset; unmarried schoolmistress 1881 living 2 East St Milborne Port with sister Mary Ann Jane.- Still both there 1891 and 1901; Died 18th June 1910 Heathcot Sherborne Dorset, still a spinster probate to Decimus Curme Gentleman (her brother) Effects £1892.

(6) Sophia Elizabeth Curme (1835-1899) bap Melcombe Regis 29th Oct 1834; aged 6 1841 Census; She married 2nd Nov 1858 to William Webster a widower Gentleman at Milborne Port Somerset.She died aged 64 and was buried at Ealing Greater London - Acton Cemetery 2nd Feb 1899

(7) Fanny Susan Charlotte Curme (1836-1910) bap Melcombe Regis 19 Apr 1836; aged 5 in 1841;She married at Melcombe Regis to Francis Avery Ensor a glove manufacturer 27th July 1858; She died a widow on 9th Aug 1910 at 8 Westcliffe Seaton Devon Effects £84 to Revd Henry Hugh Ensor Clerk

(8) Edna Martha Curme (1837-1837 ) bap Melcombe Regis 4th July 1837; She was buried at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester being from St Peters Parish described as an infant on 7th Dec 1837

(9) Olivia Priscilla Curme bap (1838-1923) born on 17th July 1838 bap Radipole Dorset 23rd Oct 1838; aged 3 in 1841 Censusl; Incorrectly recorded 1851 Census as Christian? P Curme aged 12 with parents and siblings; She married a glove manufacturer Robert H ENSOR and was living at Rosemary St Milborne Port Somerset in 1891 with 2 children and her brother Francis John Acres Curme. Olivia of 15 Soberton Ave Heath Cardiff died at 18 Gloucester St Pimlico on 3rd Oct 1923 Effects £1690

(10) Decimus Curme (1840-1925) Bap St Peters 24 Jan 1840; aged 17 months in 1841 Census; as a young man he studied to be a surgeon at Kings College and in Paris. Made a member of the Royal College of Surgeons [M.R.C.S.] and Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries [L.S.A.] 1861; Married Louisa Jane Webster 4th qtr 1866 at Newcastle in Emlyn Cardiganshire. She was a native of Upton Cheshire; He set up a General Practice at Yew Hedge House Childe Okeford in Dorset and raised a family of 6 children there. Died aged 86 at Bournemouth 4th qtr 1925]

[Note:- Robert OAKLEY (1799-1872) was the youngest of 5 children of Francis OAKLEY by his wife Mary COOMBS who married at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 18th June 1786. Anne (1798-1880) the daughter of Robert and Anne INGRAM had been born in the hamlet of Galton within the parish of Owermoigne in Dorset where she was baptised on 16th Sep 1798. Robert inherited the bulk of his fathers estate when his father died in 1821. Like his father he became a brewer by trade and was living in All Saints Parish High East Street as a tennant of N Stickland in 1822. In 1823 he it is clear from Land Tax returns that he used his fathers estate to purchase the premises and he lived there with Anne after their marriage in 1827. On 23rd May 1834 he joined the Freemasons in Dorchester. He was still shown as a proprietor of the property in High East St in the 1841 and 1851 Census returns as well as the 1855 Post Office Directory, the 1857 Electoral Register, 1858 Jury Lists and 1859 Post Office Directory.

By 1861 however he had moved to Melcombe Regis and become a farmer of 24 acres . He was buried at Melcombe Regis aged 73 on 27th Jan 1872. Ann was also buried at Melcombe Regis on 8th Nov 1880 aged 82. Children from this marriage :-

(1) Ellen Oakley (1828- ?) bap All Saints Church Dorchester 6th July 1828. Ellen married a coach builder Edward George LEWER at All Saints Church on 26th Oct 1854. Edward was the son of Edward and Anne LEWER and born in Wimborne Minster where his father was a timber merchant, Coach Builder and farmer. He was still living with his parents in Wimborne in 1851 but his brother Frederick had already left and established a coach building business in Dorchester trading out of South Street where they employed 17 men. By 1852 the family were trading there as 'Lewis and Sons (Coachbuilders to Her Majesty and HRH Prince Albert).The 1861 Census shows Edward George Lewer and Ellen living at South Grove House in Trinity street with their 4 children and employing 17 men and 7 boys. Their father Edward LWER Senior died at Wimborne 15th Feb 1869 by which time Edward George Lewer and his family were living in Plymouth Devon and his brother Frederick in Salisbury. They were joint executirs of their fathers will.

(2) Mary Ann Oakley (1829- 1830) bap All Saints Church 23rd Oct 1829 buried All Saints Dorchester 14 May 1830 aged 7 months

(3) William Oakley (1831- 1832) bap All Saints Church 9th Mar 1831 buried 15 Feb 1832; age 1 year;

(4) Susan Oakley (1833- 1922) bap All Saints Church 4th Feb 1833. Susan married George LOCK (1832-1901) at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 21st Sep 1858.  See Family pedigree compiled by David Beamish 8th April 2004. Page 25 for more information about this family

(5) Robert Oakley Junior (1835-1916) bap All Saints Church 9th Apr 1835. He moved with his family to live in Melcombe Regis and became a bank Manager. He married at All Souls Church St Marylebone London on 14th Aug 1866 to Mary Dowland MILLEDGE the daughter of a Gentleman William Milledge who had actually been born in Weymouth. He brought Mary to live with him in Melcombe Regis at 85 St Mary's St where they are shown living in 1871. Mary died in 3rd quarter 1900 and Robert remarried to an Ellen. They were living in Holdenhurst Hampshire in 1911.Robert died on 12the Dec 1916 leaving an estate of £3749 to be administered by his widow Ellen Oakley and Sidny Spark Milledge auctioneer.

(6) Clara Oakley (1836-1924) bap All Saints Church 4th Dec 1836 Clara married John George Dixon Galpin at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 16th June 1864. Follow link for more information about her family.

(7) Ann Oakley (1838- aft 1871) bap All Saints Church 11th Nov 1838. In 1871 she was aged 32 and still unmarried living with her sister Clara and her husband in Islingon.

(8) Mary Oakley (1841-aft 1861)bap All Saints Church 4th July 1841. With her parents in Melcombe Regis in 1861 aged 19. ]

This William and Jane had a daughter Mary Jane Masters baptised at All Saints church in Dorchester on 11th Dec 1828. Do not confuse with William Masters (1794-1834) an Innkeeper who married a Jane Smith at St Peters church in Dorchester on 12th Oct 1824 and had 3 children. This William MASTERS (1805-1854) appears as a shopkeeper in Pigots and Roberts Street directories for 1830 and 1839 trading from High East Street and the family is shown as still living in High East Street in the June 1841 Census. William is aged 35 to 39 in the 1841 Census and with him are his wife Jane aged 30 to 34 and his daughter Mary aged 12. The others listed are probably his mother Elizabeth shown as head of the family aged 60 to 64 and of independent means; and probably a younger brother George aged 25 to 29(this needs further research). They are still at High East St in 1851 William now referred to as a grocer aged 46, Jane as aged 44 and their daughter still unmarried aged 22 - all three born in Dorchester. Thier daughter Mary Jane Masters was buried at All Saints church on 29th Nov 1852 still only aged 24 years. William soon followed being buried there aged 49 on 17th Aug 1854.

Note:- Joseph WELLSPRING (1803-?) a basket maker by trade who lived at High West Street, he was the 3rd child from the marriage of William WELLSPRING (1766-1813) to Mary VINCENT at St Georges Church Fordington on 11th Feb 1795. Children from this marriage (1) William bap Holy Trinity Church Dorchester 3rd Aug 1828, he followed his father to become a basket maker and married by banns on 29 Apr 1851 at Holy Trinity church Dorchester to Susan Elizabeth MILLS a dressmaker the daughter of James MILLS a shoemaker from HT. (See their martriage for more info) (2) Joseph bap F StG 24th Oct 1830, and buried there aged 6 years 21st May 1837 (3) Mary Jane bap F StG 3rd Feb 1833 (4) Henry bap F StG 21st June 1835 (5) Joseph bap F StG 8 Feb 1838 (6) Sarah bap F StG 31st Jan 1841 & buried 28 Feb 1841. (7) George bap Holy Trinity Church Dorchester (HT) 20th Aug 1843 (8) Charlotte bap HT 24th Aug 1845. His wife Sarah nee OLD lived until she was 68 being buried in the Civic Cemetery on 5th June 1875.

[Note:- George LOCK (1802-1868) was the 2nd of 12 children from the marriage of William LOCK (1780-1851) to Ann BASCOMBE who married at St Peters Church in Dorchester on 1st May 1800. He was baptised at St Peters on 28th Feb 1802 and became a brewer and maltster by trade operating from Back South Street in 1830 (See Pigots Street Directory). From about 1834 they moved to Blandford Forum where George was Inkeeper at the Crown Hotel.

[Note:- William TILLEY (1800-1881) was baptised in St John the Baptist church in Bere Regis in Dorset on 30th Nov 1800 the son of Thomas TILLEY (1762-1842) & Mary nee RUTTER (1763-1840). Both his parents were married (14 Aug 1799) and died in Bere Regis but William marries here to Mary Haskett in 1829. William had a younger sister Mary TILLEY who had married in Bere Regis to a Thomas BOSWELL on 15th Feb 1825. He also had a younger brother Thomas TILLEY who was baptised in the parish on 7th July 1805. Thomas also married in 1829 on 28th June at St Georges Church in Fordington to a Martha SIMMONDS. Mary HASKETT (1806-1833) was baptised in All Saints Parish in Dorchester on 16th Nov 1806 the daughter of Stephen and Edith HASKETT. After marriage they lived in South Street in St Peters Parish in Dorchester where William was a shoemaker by trade. Unfortunately Mary died aged only 26 and was buried at All Saints on 08 Sep 1833. They raised two children :-

(1) Thomas Tilley (1830-1870) baptised on 02 Nov 1830. aged 10 1841; Cordwainer Journeyman aged 20 1851; Boot & Shoe Maker aged 30 still at 42 South St 1861; Died aged 40 buried St Peters Church 13th Dec 1870
(2) John Tilley (1833-1843) baptised on 13 Jan 1833. aged 8 1841; died aged 10 & buried at St Peters Church 13th Aug 1843.

Second Marriage:- With two young children to look after William soon re-married to Mary's elder sister Elizabeth HASKETT (1804-1873) at Wyke Regis in Dorset on 18th Jan 1836. Elizabeth had also been baptised by Stephen & Edith Haskett at All Saints in Dorchester on 24 Jun 1804. They returned to St Peters Dorchester where William was succesful in expanding his business, (See Roberts Street Directory for 1839 & Pigots Street Directory for 1844) not only being a cordwainer but also a dealer in Leather living at 42 South Street in 1865 (Harrods Street Directory) and employing 7 men by 1851. Still at 42 South Street 1861 Boot & Shoe Maker employing 3 men + 3 Apprentices. By 1871 William & Elizabeth had retired handing over their business at 42 South Street to their son Mark and were living in Trinity Street in the Parish of Holy Trinity Dorchester. Elizabeth died at the age of 69 being buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 1st Aug 1873. William died at the age of 80 and was also buried at the Civic Cemetery on the 17th Jan 1881. William & Elizabeth had the following children baptised At St Peters Church:-

(3) Mark Tilley (1836-1920) bap 14 Nov 1836; aged 5 1841; aged 14 1851; He married at St Georges Church in Fordington to Eliza TAYLOR the 28 year old daughter of a Yeoman Samuel Taylor on 31st March 1859.Follow link for more info.
(4) Luke Tilley (1839- 1914) bap 21 Apr 1839; aged 2 1841; aged 12 1851; Resident at Huish, Yeovil, Somerset unmarried aged 22 Shop Assistant in 1861; He moved to live in Ledbury Hertfordshire and at the age of 31 (after banns were read on 24th April; 1st and 8th May 1870) he married on the 12th May in his brides parish of Baltonsborough in Somerset to Mary Ann Sarah LUTLEY who was then aged 21. She was the daughter of Robert LUTLEY an Innkeeper & later a carpenter by trade by his wife Ann. After marriage they settled to live at 32/33 High Street Ledbury where Luke was a printer and bookseller. They had a daughter Ellen named after Mary's sister and in the 1871 Census Luke's brother Peter is living with them working as a Printer (Letter Press). Luke died 30 Sep 1914 at Ledbury.
(5) Matthew Henry Tilley (1842-1919) bap 17 Jun 1842;1861 Census aged 18 at 42 South Street Watch & Clock Maker. He then married Elizabeth ACKERMAN (1849-1906) at Wyke Regis in Dorset on 05 Dec 1866. Follow link for more information.
(6) John Tilley (1845-1919) bap St Peters 31st Dec 1845 (GRO Births John Tilley 4th qtr 1845 Ref 8/48) aged 5 1851; Aged 15 in 1861 Census Grocer's Apprentice; aged 25 unmarried in 1871 living with his retired parents in Trinity St Holy Trinity Dorchester working as a grocers assistant. In 2nd qtr 1879 he married in the district of Bath to Amelia Tomlyns ROLES. John of 8 Cornwall Road Dorchester died 4th July 1919 leaving an estate of £8055 to his relict Amelia.
(7) Peter Tilley (1849- 1919) bap St Peters 25th Mar 1849; aged 2 1851; aged 12 Scholar 1861; aged 21 unmarried living & working with his elder brother Luke in Ledbury 1871; He remained a bachelor for the rest of his life working with his brother Luke in Ledbury until after 1911 as a letter press printer. His death is also recorded in the Probate Calendar as being at Bath Villa Leek Street Wrenn Shropshire leaving an estate of £416 to be administered by his brothers Mark & Matthew Henry.

[Note:-James BARTLETT (1809- 1879) was a child from the marriage of James BARTLETT to Jane c1800. After Marriage they settled in All Saints Parish Dorchester in Durngate Street to live where James Bartlett was a Tailor by trade. In the 1841 Census he was aged 30 to 34 and His wife Amelia Bartlett nee Chandler (1822-1856) aged 25/29. In the 1851 Census they are still living at Durgate James a Journeyman Tailor and Amelia aged 39 states her place of birth as Portsmouth in Hampshire. Amelia was buried at All Saints Church on 24th Jan 1856. In the 1861 Census James, now a widower aged 51, was living with his 4 surviving children in Durngate Street in All Saints Parish. In 1871 Census he is a Master tailor aged 61. James was buried at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 4th March 1879 aged 69 years . Known Children from this marriage:-

(2) Jane Bartlett (1833-1858) bap All Saints 29 Sep 1833 : C1841 age 8; C1851 age 17: Buried at the Civic Cemetery 24th June 1858 aged 25 years described as Jane the daughter of James Bartlett a Tailor

(3) Elizabeth Bartlett (1836- aft 1883) bap All Saints 7th Aug 1836: C1841 age 5 ; C1851 High West St, Holy Trinity Parish, age 14: born Dorchester: C1861 age 24 unmarried : C1871 age 33 Housekeeper: C1881 Durngate St still unmarried aged 44 and a seamstress; Elizabeth married at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 31st July 1883 to Isaac BONNELL an Army Pensioner. His Pension Service No. is 86863 2nd battalion 60th Regt Royal Rifles and he served for a total of just over 21 years including overseas in China for 1 year 4 months and 13 years 5 months in India and Afghanistan. When discharged to Pension he was aged 39 and residing in Pease Lane in Dorchester. Isaac died aged only 46 and was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 30th Dec 1887.

(4) George Bartlett (1840-aft 1901) bap All Saints 13th Sep 1840 : C1841 age 10 months : C1851 age 10: C 1861 age 20 Wheelwright : George Bartlett a wheelwright married at Christchurch West Fordington to Emily CROSS on 26th May 1863. Follow link for more information about their family.George is in the 1901 Census living at 39 Portman Road, Bournemouth within the district of Christchurch Hampshire.with 4 of his children. recorded as a widower aged 60 a Wine Merchants manager born Dorchester.

(5) John James Bartlett (1849-1875) bap All Saints 2nd Dec 1849 : C1851 age 1: C1861 age 11 ; C1871 age 21 Cordwainer Journeyman. John James recorded as a shoemaker by trade was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 25th Jan 1875 aged 25 years

(6) Henry Bartlett (1853-1931) bap All Saints 15th May 1853 : C1861 age 7 : C1871 age 18 Carpenter Journeyman. He married a widow named Mary COBB nee READ, a native of Poole at Wimborne Minster on 1st Aug 1880. Her father Mark READ a gardener was one of the witnesses. They settled in St Martins Parish in Wareham to live where they had 2 children (William Henry c1882 and Beatrice Martha c1885). By 1901 they had returned to live in All Saints Parish Dorchester where they operated a Coffee Tavern in High East St near the Vicarage, whilst Henry contined his trade as a Carpenter. By 1911 they were living at No. 14 on Fordington Hill, Henry 58 and Mary 61. Henry was buried at the age of 78 at Weymouth Ave Civic Cemetery Grave 2-1839 during 1st qtr 1931.

[Note:- James Robert England CURTIS (1811-1891) was baptised at Holy Trinity Church Dorchester on 10th Sep 1811 the son of a tailor, Thomas CURTIS (1772-1866) and Susannah SAUNDERS (1773-1861). His father died at the age of 94 and was buried at St Georges Church in Dordington. His bride Frances Old GREENING was baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 7th Feb 1813. After marriage they lived in West Back Street where James worked as a tailor and draper but by 1851 they had moved to live in a better house in High West Street where James, now a Master Tailor, was employing 4 men. By Easter in 1852 James had also taken on a part time 2 day job as Assistant Crier to the Court at the Quarter Sessions as they had a lot of work to get through. He was used in this capacity again at the Sessions held at Easter in 1856 and both the Ephiphany and Easter Sessions in 1857. the they remained until his death. - The Post Office Directory for 1871 shows that he had been appointed Sergeant at Mace for Dorchester, a position he retained until his death in 1891. The 1881 census and Kelly's Directory for 1889 also suggest that another function he carried out was that of Bill Poster for the Corporation. He died at Dorchester aged 81 in March 1891 and was interred at the Civic Cemetery on 24th of that month. Frances CURTIS nee GREENING (1813-1883) his widow was also buried at the civic cemetery aged 71 on 12th Dec 1883. He died on 28th May 1860 at Worton Wilts leaving a Will with his mother as exectrix. Effects under £100 and Rosina returned to her family In Dorchester with her newly born son Henry Frederick Perrett who is with her and her parents in the 1861 Census. Now recorded as a widow she remarried at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 4th Aug 1865 to William Henry JENNER (1830-1901) .

[Note:- William MARTIN (1804-1875 ) was baptised at St Georges Church Fordington on 1st Jan 1804 the son of William & Elizabeth Martin. He grew up in Fordington but by the time of his marriage was working as a servant in All Saints parish. Between 1838 & 1841 they moved to live in Friary Lane in Holy Trinity Parish where William worked as a brewer. By 1851 he is describing himself as a Maltster Journeyman's Labourer a trade he worked in for most of his life. By 1871 however William now aged 67 had moved again with his wife and son Charles to live at the back of the St Georges church in Fordington and then Standfast where William worked as an Agricultural Labourer in nearby Fordington Fields. William was buried at Fordington aged 71 on 24th Feb 1875. After his death his widow Jane MARTIN (1808-1881) as a long standing member of the community was awarded a place in Chubb's Almshouses in North square where she died at the age of 72 in 4th qtr 1881. She was probably buried at the civic cemetery where records are currrently unavailable. After termination of their partnership William continued to trade as a stonemason under his own name from High West Street and is listed in Slaters Street Directory of 1852. By 1861 he had retired and the 1865 Harrods Directory lists him as resident at 8 High East St. The 1871 Census records him living at No 2 High East St with his wife Mary Slade (1804-1877) Mary was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 14th June 1877 aged 73 leaving a Will. William SLADE died on 9th March 1884 at 3 High West St was also buried at the Civic Cemetery aged 83 on 13th March 1884 recorded as a proprietor of Houses. He left an estate of £8,062 proved at Blandford on 5th May by Samuel POND of Blandford his nephew, William Nichols of Parkside Hounslow and George Hawkins Gentleman of Dorchester his executors.]

Note:- Thomas Henry Gatehouse BEASANT (1806-1874) was born In Dorchester on 19 Nov 1806 the son of Thomas Gatehouse BESANT (1778-1808) but he and his elder sister Mary Mowlam Besant were not baptised at All Saints Church until 28th June 1812. His bride, Sarah Elizabeth BESANT (1814-1879), was the only daughter of the late John James BESANT Esq (1787-1819) of Dorchester an Ordnance Storekeeper. They had three children (1) Rosa Ann Besant (1850-1851) (2) Floras Ann Besant (1852-1878) and (3) Francis Thomas John Besant (1854)

[Note:- Henry CHARLES (1823-1879) was the son of John CHARLES (1789-1869) and Ann HIDE [HYDE] (1796-1883) of Fordington and baptised at St Georges Church on 27th Oct 1823. - Elizabeth HART (1828-1885) was the daughter of John and Sarah HART and baptised at Hilton in Dorset on 15th Aug 1828. By March 1851 she was already working as a house servant for James LONGMAN the Innkeeper of 'The Green Dragon' in Durngate Street in All Saints Parish and this is probably how she net Henry Charles. Initally after marriage they settled to live in Mill Street in Fordington where their first child was born as shown below. By 1856 they are resident in Hollow Row in Fordington where 2 more children are born and I think Mary their 1st child died. By June 1861 they are living at Tubb's Corner in Fordington where their 4th child Sarah was also born shortly after the census. Henry and Elizabeth are still there in 1871 and Henry died at Tubs Corner aged 55 and was buried at FStG Churchyard on 22nd July 1879. By 1881 Mary (alias Elizabeth) is still living at Tubb's Corner with her unmarried daughter Elizabeth and son George. Elizabeth CHARLES nee HART died at the age of 57 being buried at FStG as Elizabeth CHARLES on 21st July 1885. I have not discovered any logical reason why from time to time she chose to call herself Mary but the fact is that she was baptised, married, buried and in Census returns as Elizabeth even when she is having her name recorded as Mary on most of her childrens baptsims . (1) Eliza Mary Charles (1853-1857?) recorded as a daughter of Henry and Mary [i.e.alias Elizabeth] Charles abode Mill Street. She was baptised at St Georges Church in Fordington {FStG} on 25th Sep 1853 abode Mill Street Fordington. Probably died as not with the family in the 1861 Census - also note a Mary Jane Charles of Holloway Row in Fordington (where the family was from 1856) aged 4 was buried at FStG Church on 9th Nov 1857 which might be her.

(2) James Charles (1856-1924) recorded as a son of Henry & Elizabeth Charles abode Hollow Row Fordington. He was baptised at FStG Church on 30th Nov 1856. Aged 4 in the 1861 Census but already training to be a blacksmith in 1871. He married on 27th Jan 1878 at Sherborne to Agnes Anne FRAMPTON (1856-1929) a 22 year old widow the daughter of John BARRETT an Agricultural Labourer. (3) Eliza Jane Charles (1859- 1860) recorded as a daughter of Henry & Elizabeth Charles abode Hollow Row Fordington. She was baptised at FStG Church on 12th May 1859 and buried at FStG Church on 12th May 1860 aged 1 year.

(4) Sarah Ann Charles (1861-1897) recorded as a daughter of Henry and Mary [i.e. alias Elizabeth] Charles abode Tubb's Corner. She was baptised at FStG Church on 28th July 1861; aged 9 in 1871 when her mother is recorded as Elizabeth;

(5) Elizabeth Hart Charles (1864-Aft 1881) GRO birth 3rd qtr 1864 Dorchester district Ref5a/328; She was bap FStG church 30th Oct 1864 recorded as the daughter of Henry and Mary [i.e. alias Elizabeth nee Hart] Charles abode Mill Street Fordington. Elizabeth Charles Aged 6 in 1871 and still with her mother unmarried aged 17 in 1881.

David BARTLETT recorded as a Malster from St Peters Parish died at the age of 47 and was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 17th Dec 1875. At the time of the C1881 Harriet Bartlett now a widow aged 45 is working as a nurse at the Dorset County Hospital in Princess Street in Holy Trinity Parish whilst Mary Jane Bartlett her step daughter is recorded as head of the household back in Trinity Street looking after 5 of her younger siblings. C1891 Harriet living on her own means in Princess St aged 56 with her daughter Lilian: C1901 23 Orchard St Peters Parish Dorchester Harriett Bartlett Mother Widow aged 67 living on own means born Gosfield. Mr Croft, George Butcher Bartlett to Emily, daughter of Mr. Rose of Frampton [near] Dorchester. C1911 resident at Ravenswood Wokingham George a coachman aged 45 with Emily married for 16 years with 2 living children (Frederick and George) I have no followed this family as they left Dorchester.

She married on 18th Dec 1893 (4th qtr 1893 Dorchester Dist Ref 5a 748) to John William Thomas SIMMONS a native of Portsea Hampshire and had 4 children 1893-1904. John served in the Dorset Regt for 19 years 156 days and re-enlisted on 6th Oct 1914 on promotion to Sergeant and was then posted to the Wiltshire Regt. He was awarded 'Meritorious Service Medal in 1917 and mentioned in despatches in 1919. On re-enlistment Alicia was resident at 18 Damery St in Blandford Dorset. . Alicia Simmons is in the 1911 Census aged 40 married for 17 years raising 4 children born in St Peters Parish Dorchester. Alicia died at the age of 76 in Devon (GRO Ref 5b/81)

As a young man George worked as a tailor with his father in Bell Street All Saints parish in Dorchester, a trade he was still following when he married here 1870.

His 1st wife Elizabeth BRUSHETT (1850-1891) (recorded above) was bap at Fordington on 24th Nov 1850 the daughter of a labourer John BRUSHETT by his wife Elizabeth. John soon changed occupation and in 1851 was working as a brewers labourer and living a few houses away from the Bull's Head on Fordington Hill. By 1861 he had moved with his wife and family to live at the Charminster Tavern in Charminster where he was a beer retailer. By 1865 he had returned to live in Dorchester and now well versed in the trade was the Innkeeper of the 'Three Mariners' in High East street.

After marriage George & Elizabeth PITFIELD lived in Durngate Street where for a time he continued to trade as a tailor, but he also obtained a licence to sell ale and by April 1871 when the next Census was taken he and his wife are shown as running 'The Old House at Home' Public House at 54 Durngate Street. Elizabeth's father is also recorded as living in Durngate Street in 1871 and was no doubt helping to establish the business as he is still recorded as being a publican. They soon gained confidence and by 1875 her father John Brushett was Innkeeper of 'The Star Inn' in Bell street. In 1877 the existing Innkeeper Thomas RIGGS of the Bull's Head Inn on Fordington Hill died and George Pitfield seized the opportunity to take over the business. George ran the Bull's Head with Elizabeth for 16 years until she died in 1891.

Elizabeth died according to her memorial on 17th Jan 1891 aged 41 and was buried at St George Church in Fordington on 22nd. George had the following children by Elizabeth:- (1) George John (1871-1947) bap All Saints Dorchester 15th Jan 1871, he married Alice Mary Scard 2nd qtr 1894 (2) Walter Thomas (1875-1947) bap All Saints 19th Dec 1875 he had become a printer compositor by 1891. (3) Arthur Francis (1878-1911) bap F St G 17th Nov 1878 (4) Bessie Sarah (1881-1883) bap F St G 27th Apr 1881 & buried at the age of 2 years 8 months on 18th Mar 1883 (5) Rosina Kate bap F St G 4th April 1883-died 1909 (6) Caroline Margaret (1885-1885) privately bap F St G 4th June 1885 buried 31st Dec 1885 aged 8 months]

George re-married to Eliza Jane LEGGE (1858-1915) in 1891 in Epsom Surrey (See GRO 3rd qtr 1891 district Epsom Ref 2a/16). Eliza Jane was the daughter of the principal prison warder at Portland Jail, James LEGGE who had married Eliza Jane PITFIELD (b.1821) in Fordington on 4th Oct 1849 . His 2nd wife Eliza Jane had been raised in Portland until her father moved to Battersea to work in Her Majesty's Convict Department and she was living with them in 1881 at 57 Morrison Street Battersea. Clearly through her mother she remained in contact with Fordington. Circa 1896/7 George handed over control of the Bull's Head to his son George John PITFIELD (1871-1947).

They moved to Parkstone where he was still described as a publican in 1898. By 1911 he had become the Hotel proprietor of the Halfway Hotel, Poole Road, Parkstone, Dorset and George John is shown as Innkeeper of the Bull's Head in Fordington. Eliza Jane died at the age of 56 and was buried at Longfleet on 5th Feb 1915. George also died at Parkstone and was buried at Longfleet aged 72 on 13th Jan 1917. [Note:- Thomas BEAVIS (1850-1916) was baptised at FStG Church on 12th Dec 1850 the son of Thomas BEAVIS (b.1822) and Mary WHITE who married at Portesham in Dorset on 3rd Sep 1846. He was born at Little Britain in Fordington and is aged 5 months in the 1851 Census, and 10 years in 1861. In the 1871 Census, taken on the night of 2nd April, they are living in All Saints Parish in Durngate St where Thomas Beavis is recorded as a wheelwright journeyman. Selina gives her age as 20 and birthplace as Broadmayne and with her is their daughter Agnes Alice TREVISS who was baptised at All Saints on 17th June 1870. They married 11 days later after she recovered from the birth so Agnes is correctly recorded in the 1871 Census as Agnes Alice BEAVIS aged 10 months. In the 1881 Census Agnes aged 10 years is staying with Thomas and Mary BEAVIS (her uncle) in Fordington High Street. She much later married Walter William SAMMONS on 1st Aug 1897 at All Saints Church in the Parish of Rotherhide in Surrey and went on to raise 6 children. Thomas and Selina moved briefly to Charminster where a daughter Ada Ann was born c1776 before settling in Surret at Newington where they had raised a further 3 children by 1881. By 1891 they had moved to 12 Golden's Place in Lambeth and were still there in 1901.By 1911 Thomas is a widower having raised a family of ten children living at 94 Lollard St in Lambeth. Thomas died in Lambeth at the age of 66 during 1st qtr 1916]

[Note:- Thomas Riglar (1865-1947) was the son of George Riglar Junior (1821-1902) In 1891 he was a Railwy Porter living in Bell St Dorchester, and by 1911 a Railway Goods Clerk living at 43 Icen Way. Thomas enlisted into the 4th Battalion of the Dorset Regt during the First World War on 25th Sep 1914 Soldier 5038. Unusually he served in the Royal Defence Force and remained in England until demobilised 12th March 1916. He died Dorchester District 4th qtr 1947 aged 82 GRO Ref 6a/469. They had 9 children together :-

(1) Winifred Mary Riglar (1890-1893) Born on 8th Feb 1890 she was bap at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 18th May 1890 and died aged 3 23rd May 1893 (GRO Dorchester 5a 209?)

(2) Dorothy Riglar (1891-1965) Born 29 Mar 1891 she was bap at All Saints 19th Apr 1891. In 1939 she was unmarried living at 136 King Henry's Road Hamstead working as a parlour maid. She died at the New Hospital Hamstead whilst still living at this address on 10th Jan 1965 leaving a modest estate of £355 to Kathleen Maple her younger sister.

(3) Reginald Thomas Riglar (1892-1985) Born 4th July 1892 he was baptsied at All Saints Church on 30th Oct 1892. In the 1911 Census he is a Railway Porter in Dorchester but he emigrated to Australia on the ship "Orama" on 6th June 1913 when he recorded his occupation there to be a farmer. In WWI he enlisted in the Australian 6th Field Ambulance Soldier 3394 on15th Feb 1915 and served in France from 9th Aug 1916 until April 1918 and returned to Australia 22nd July 1919 being discharged 28th Dec that year. He married Susannah Laura Bottomley in 1919 at Victoria (Ref 9087) He died 22nd Jan 1985 at Melbourne Australia.

(4) Sidney Ralph Riglar (1893 -1962) Born 15th Nov 1893 he was baptised at All Saints Church 27th Jan 1894. He was a tailors Apprentice 1911 and married Edith C Curtis in the district of Sheborne in June 1923. He died at Weymouth 8th May 1962.

(5) Winifred Dalley Riglar (1895-1897) Born 26th Oct 1895 she was baptised at All Saints on 26th Jan 1896. She died on 10th Mar 1897 and was buried at the civic cemetery in Dorchester on 13th.

(6) Kathleen Dalley Riglar (1896 -1998) Born 30th Dec 1896 she was baptised at All Saints 28th Feb 1897. She married Harold Maple (1892-1971) on 26th May 1926 in London St George Hanover Square (district). She died in2nd qtr 1998 in Woking Surrey.

(7) Richard Thomas Riglar (1898-1918) Born 26th Sep 1898 he was baptised at All Saints Church on 30th Oct 1898. He enlisted in WWI Soldier 350410 1st/6th Bat Highland light Infantry and died of woulnds 5th Oct 1918.

(8) Nelson Dalley Riglar (1900-1971) Born 1st Feb 1900 he was baptsierd at All Saints Church on 25th Feb 1900. A Gardener by trade he married Ivy G.M.A. Paulley (born 9th Jan 1907) in 1931 and they lived at 27 Dukes Avenue in Dorchester in 1939. He died 2nd Jan 1971

(9) Ida Mary Riglar (1901-1989) Born 27th Aug 1901 and baptised All Saints 29th Sep 1901. She was unmarried in 1939 but married in 3rd qtr 1948 to John Jones in the district of Frome Somerset. She died 29th Mar 1989

[Note:- Thomas BARTLETT (1874-1951) was born at Maiden Newton but baptised at Toller Porcorum Dorset on 10th May 1874 the son of a Labourer John BARTLETT by his wife Ellen HALLETT when they were recorded as living in Great Toller. The 1881 Census records John BARTLETT aged 31 an Agricultural Labourer born at Melplash in Dorset with his wife Ellen aged 26 born Netherbury living in a Cottage at Netherbury with their son Thomas then aged 7 years with 2 youmger sisters. I am not aware of any prior association with existing Bartlett families living in Dorchester or Fordington. Gertrude Louise EVERETT (1877-1956) appears to have lost her parents at an early age as she is aged 3 living in Plumstead (which she later records as her birthplace) described as the grandaughter of Ann BRUCE a widow aged 59 and a Laundress born in Scotland. By the age of 13 Gertrude is in the 1891 Census where she is already a working as a Domestic Servant in a small boarding house at 12 Great Western Terrace run by Esther the wife of William J GOULD a Printer by trade. By the 1901 Census Thomas has become a Police Constable and they have moved to live in Weymouth ]
