Leonard died and was buried at FStG on 7th January 1784. He was quickly followed by Ann his widow who was buried on 12th Sep 1784. Leonards death meant that Ann had no support and the Overseers of the Poor for Fordington in their accounts dated Sep 1784 refer to paying 7 shillings for her sickness & waking - an all night vigil for the deceased prior to burial - and 16 shillings and 8d for her burial

Entry 80 John BEAVIS resident in this parish & Sarah MATTHEWS of this place were married by banns 05-Oct-1780 by me Nathaniel Templeman both their marks witnesses John Bishop and George Lester

Note:- John BEAVIS (1757-1813) From the above it is clear he was already resident in Fordington in 1780. From surviving Land Tax returns we know that between 1806 and 1814 the family were living in Mill Street in Fordington in a House with a Garden owned by Robert Summers. Sarah BEAVIS nee MATTHEWS (d.1812) was buried at St Georges Church on 3rd September 1812 and her funeral must have been paid for by her husband as there is no evidence of support by the Overseers in Fordington. John BEAVIS however soon followed her being buried at FStG Church on 22nd July 1813 when his age was given as being 56. The Overseers of the Poor Accounts for Fordington (image 831 on ancestry.com) record in the Accounts for the period 4th to 30th July 1813 that they paid 14 shillings for John BEAVECS [BEAVIS's] Coffin; 8 shillings for a Shroud ; and 7 shillings and 6 pence for his funeral expenses. These typically would have included Laying him out, making his shroud, Beer for the widow's laying him out, pall-bearers, a black cloth for the coffin, ringing the church bell and paying the Sexton to dig his grave. Looking back through the accounts he was first in receipt of relief during the week commencing the 18th April 1813 (image 825) when he was given 5 shillings. Further down the account in the same week it's clear they had the doctor in to see to a number of sick individuals for which they paid the exorbitant amount of £20. A further 3 shillings relief was paid to John BEAVIS and it's clear from later accounts that this is the amount they were paying for him to be looked after. They continued to pay him 6 shillings a week relief during April and May and an additional 3 shillings a week for his care. By July I think it was clear that he was unlikely to recover and they paid a combined amount of 8 shillings a week until he died. Children from this marriage:-

Entry 94 William NORRIS otp & Martha SPARKS otp were married by banns 23-Nov-1783 by me Thomas Bryer curate his mark her signature witnesses Jacob Corben and George Lester

[Note:By 1779 William NORRIS (1744-1818) already had a family of 7 children with Martha Unknown and she appears to have died soon after 1779 as there were no more children. Martha SPARKS husband Nathaniel Sparks Senior died intestate and was buried in the graveyard at St Georges Church on 12 Oct 1779. William and Martha nee Sparks had a daughter they baptised as Elizabeth Norris (1785- ) at FStG on 17th July 1785. William NORRIS was buried at FStG on 9th January 1818 aged 77 years giving an estimated year of birth of 1741.In fact this has enabled me to identify his baptism. He was the eldest son of William NORRIS (d.1799) by his 2nd wife Mary VOS who had married at FStG on 29th April 1744. His father had been married before on 28th May 1738 to Mary DIFFEY (d1742/3) but they had no children.

As already explained under his previous marriage he was by then a pauper and the Overseers Accounts for St Georges Church in Fordington show they paid £1.5s.8d for his coffin, a shroud cloth and the fee to the Sexton to dig his grave and gave his widow 2s 6d.to tied her over. Widows in receipt of poor relief were often employed by the overseers when a person they were responsible for died to wash the body of the deceased and lay them out for burial and sometimes provided ale for while they worked.

Entry 114 Nicholas SWYER otp & Ann EWER otp were married by Banns 06-Jun-1787 by me Thomas Bryer curate his signature her mark witnesses James Norman and George Lester

Nicholas SWYER (1753- ) was the illegitimate son of Ann HUTCHENS and baptised at All Saints Church in Dorchester on 6th July 1753. He appeared at the Shaston Quarter Sessions on 14th July 1772 recorded as Nicholas HUTCHINGS Alias SWYER charged with 'feloniously stealing one iron hammer valued at 2d the property of Henry Greening of West Stafford a Blacksmith but was found 'not guilty for want of prosecution'. (See Quarter sessions Plea Books 1768-1780 - Ancestry.com Image 103/104 of 283)

On 23rd April 1794 Nicholas SWYER was again arrested, charged with stealing a deal board but acquitted at the Easter Assizes 1794. The Prison Register however confirms that he was then aged about 40 working as an agricultural labourer and gives a physical description. Follow link provided for more information. [Note:- Jonathan FUDGE (1761- 1836) was the eldest of 13 children of Jonathan FUDGE & Mary LOCK who had married at FStG on 16-Apr 1759. His name appears upon the listing of men living in Fordington on 11th January 1796, who were between the ages of 18 & 45, and therefore eligible for selection to serve in the Militia. This is particularly useful as being aged 35 we can rule out several other relatives with the same name. The listing also confirms that like his father before him he was an agrcultural labourer, he was married (i.e. to Sarah Lock in 1787) and was 5 feet 5 inches tall, and had no children. We can be sure of this because the number of children were listed against other entries on the form and any man with more than a wife and one child to support was excluded from the selection pool. This was common practice as destitute wives and children would fall upon the parish for support. He was buried at FStG on 27 Apr 1836 when his age was given at 80 Years which seems to have been an approximation as he was actually 75. Sarah FUDGE nee LOCK (1760-1825) the wife of Jonathan FUDGE pre-deceased him and was buried at FStG on 8th July 1825 aged 65 years.

William and Ann had a son John HARDEN Bap at FStG on 16 Aug 1789 but he died and was buried at FStG on 11th Oct 1789. Another son also named John Harden was buried on 8th Dec 1790 so was probably a still birth as there is no baptism for him. Ann died and was buried at FStG 16th July 1791. William HARDEN then remarried to Sarah TOOP at FStG on 21 Aug 1791. ]

William NORRIS & Mary DAVIS married 04-Feb 1793 [BT's have Jan 4th ]

[Note:- WILLIAM NORRIS (1769-1852) BIRTH. He was baptised in nearby Stinsford Dorset on 5th November 1769 the eldest child of William & Martha NORRIS. After Baptism his parents settled in Fordington where his six younger siblings were born and baptised between 1771 and 1779. The family were very poor with the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor lending support when his father was out of work or helping to by his children clothes and shoes.

BASTARDY : Prior to this marriage Mary DAVIS had an illegitimate daughter who was baptised at FStG on 26th Aug 1792 and Christened as Jane DAVIS. When questioned by the Overseers of the Poor she named the father as William NORRIS and they wanted recompense for the costs of her lying in and security for the maintenance for her daughter. William NORRIS was arrested on 18th Jan 1793 against a warrant issued by the JP Francis Steward Esq on a charge of Bastardy but annotated that it was for want of securities. The prison register gives his age as being 22 years old and his status as being single. This suggests that he had acknowledged he was the father and agreed to contribute to the costs of her maintenance but had failed to come up with sufficient security. They appear to have reached agreement that they would marry (avoiding appearance at the Quarter Sessions) as this legally bound him for his families maintenance and as stated above they married on the 4th February which was also the date he was formally released from the County Gaol by Colonel David Robert Michael one of the JP's who attended the Quarter Sessions on 15th Jan 1793. Jane NORRIS/DAVIS married Robert Peaty at FStG on 2nd Aug 1808 when her mother Mary NORRIS was one of the witnesses.

2nd ARREST: William NORRIS was arrested again on 22nd Dec 1804 charged with allowing his family to become chargeable on the parish for which he was found guilty and spent 14 days hard labour in Dorchester Prison. Arresting someone 3 days before Christmas seems harsh but he spent the time in the House of Correction working a large engine. Capable prisoners were all employed, some manufacturing hats, others spinning wool or employed on other productive work which helped reduce the cost of running the prison and even raised revenue. They were paid a wage according to what they did and taught how to do the job and even allowed to retain a percentage for them or their families. He was of course also fed so this may have been a better option for him if he was completly destitute with at that time 5 children to support. .

Mary the wife of William NORRIS was buried at FStG on 8th Sep 1811.[Note:- The Overseers of the Poor Accounts for Fordington (image 783 on ancestry.com) record in the Accounts for 5th Sep 1811 :- "William NORRIS Wife Funeral Coffin, Shroud & Expenses £1. 8s.4d] .They had the following six children after they married. above :-

WIDOWER: On the 18th (or 19th) of November 1814 William NORRIS was again arrested for Bastardy, and his entry in the prison register correctly describes him as a widower having 7 children. I have not located any background to this charge but he appears to have served 3 months hard labour and been released on 10th Feb 1815. It is difficult to be sure which of the baseborn children listed in the parish register might be relevent but a likely candidate might be Mary the baseborn child of Susannah LYDE?

DEATH: William NORRIS (1769-1852) is recorded in the 1851 Census as a pauper resident in the Union Workhouse in Fordington a farm labourer aged 84. He died there and was buried at FStG on 23rd Aug 1852 aged 85.

[Note:- Lot GARTELL is a very unusual name but information about his life and those associated with him has proved difficult to locate so I have simply recorded the following series of documents that appear to be relevant.:-

[On 1st Feb 1796 Elizabeth the daughter of Lot and Elizabeth GARTELL was buried at St Georges Church in Fordington. I cannot trace a baptism so may have been a still birth.

[On 12th July 1796 Lot GARTELL , described as a Yeoman of Fordington, appeared before the Quarter Sessions held at Shaston charged with assault on a Daniel HARRIS a labourer of Fordington. [QS Plea Books 1793/1810]. This required further investigation so he was bound over to appear at the next Sessions having to provide a surity of £20 to answer the complaint. {Image 50 of 261] A warrant for Daniel Harris to appear prosecute and give evidence against Lot GARTELL was also issued {Image 52]. This does not however appear to have resulted in a prosecution as they are not mentioned in subsequent Sessions records.

[There is a very brief mention in the Will of a Frances LEGG (1747-1830) the widow of Samuel LEGG (1749-1833) a Baker of Fordington which states on the 1st page ""All that the said Dwellinghouse Outhouses and Garden with the appurtenances which were lately occupied by the said Lot GARTEL and then in the occupation of Samuel LEGG" her husband. From reading the document I suspect that her husband purchased the property from Lot GARTELL soon after the turn of the century .]

Entry 13 Joseph BISHOP otp & Sarah WINZAR otp were married by banns 17-Aug-1798 by me John Davis curate; both their marks; witnesses James Brooke and John Oliver

[Note:- Joseph BISHOP (1777-aft. 1814* ) was bap at FStG on 27th July 1777 the 8th child from the marriage of Joseph and Elizabeth BISHOP. Sarah WINZAR (1774-1846) was the daughter of Samuel & Catherine WINZAR and baptised at FStG on 28th July 1774. After marriage they lived in Fordington raising a family of 4 children by 1811 as listed below. There can be no doubt that this was a very poor family often being supported by the churchwardens and overseers of the poor of Fordington.

*Joseph Bishop is a common name in Dorset. For example a Joseph Bishop the son of Joseph & Celia BISHOP was born 7 months after our baptism at nearby Stinsford on 9th Feb 1778 and he is in the 1841, 1851 & 1861 Census returns living at Burlestone in Dorset and this has led to some confusion in family trees. There is no obvious burial for our Joseph so I have had to turn to other records. There are some indications that he joined the Dorset Militia. Before his marriage I think he had been working for some time in All Saints parish as a Joseph Bishop, a servant who was 5ft 6inches tall appears on the list parishioners for All Saints in 1796 who were between the ages of 18 and 45 and eligible for the ballot to serve in the Militia. He would then have been aged 19. Although there were Bishop families living in All Saints none seem to contain an eligible Joseph at this date. This made me turn to the Overseers accounts for Fordington and they show for example that in 1811 the Overseers were paying Sarah Bishop during her confinement for the birth of their 4th child John. Apart from weekly support of 5/- they also paid Sarah Anson an extra shilling a week to look after her during 7th to 21st Dec 1811 (image 789). At the end of December they were also paying 3 shillings a week extra payments to Joseph. From January we get a weekly sum of six shillings a week for 'Joseph BISHOP and wife' and on 22nd Feb they also buy Joseph a pair of shoes.

In Oct 1812 we start to get Militia Payments made to a list of families (Image 812) one of which is Bishop's Wife for 5 weeks £1. 6s. 8d . The Dorset Militia was then in East Anglia but Joseph (often entered only as Jos) seems to be back by Feb 1813 (820) and back on 6/- a week with his wife although he goes on 2 weeks training with the Militia during 4th to 18th April 1813. for which Bishop's Family is paid 13s 4d. Sarah continues to need extra help from time to time eg. being given an extra 2/- in April 1813 (825). Joseph's last Militia payment to his family (Image 842) is for the full amount of £1. 6s. 8d for a month up to 1st April 1814.

NOTE: [Joseph Bishop's father also Joseph BISHOP (1730-1814) was buried at FStG on 18th June 1814 aged 84 and the overseers pay for all his funeral expenses. Just for the sake of clarification he had not been eligible (i.e. below age of 45) to serve in the Militia since well before his son married here in 1798. Also all his children were dead or had married so any ref to Bishop's children cannot apply to his family other than his son Joseph married here]

On the 15th Sep 1813 Sarah is arrested giving her age as 34 (1779) and her trade as 'Day Work'. She says she is married with 4 children which is correct. She is accused of stealing a gown but acquitted and released from gaol but not until 19th March 1814. Sarah is arrested for a 2nd time on 15th Dec 1817 this time accused of stealing turnips, presumably to feed her 4 children, for which she is fined 20 shilling. Her daughter Catherine is arrested twice 1stly 1st July 1820 (See Catherine below) for misbehavior in the workhouse and again on 5th Jan 1821 accused of obtaining money under false pretenses. Sarah is arrested for a third time on 30th March 1822 accused of obtaining money, goods and chattels of the Overseers of the Poor of Fordington under false presences. For 2nd time she is acquitted being released on 19th Apr 1822. Unfortunately Poor Law records finish in 1822 but Sarah continues to have relief right to the end. By the time of the death of their daughter Catherine in 1828 Joseph appears to be absent from any records as Catherine is simply referred to as the daughter of Sarah BISHOP.

She was buried at FStG on 23rd Oct 1846 described as being from the Union Workhouse aged 70 years.
    Children from this marriage :-

On 2nd May 1822 Katherine BISHOP had her base born son Joseph baptised at FStG. The father was Joseph STROUD who was arrested for Bastardy on 24th Aug 1822. [Note:- This is the 2nd marriage of Lot GARTELL, his first marriage was to Elizabeth BUN at FStG on 3rd Dec 1795. The assumption is that she died prior to this marriage, but no trace. Follow link for more information about his life prior to his 2nd marriage. Children from this marriage :-
    (1) Ann GARTELL (1801- aft 1804) bap FStG 1st Nov 1801 ,
    (2) Robert GARTELL (1802 - 1802) no trace of baptism but was buried at FStG 24 May 1802

[On 7th Oct 1800 Lot GARTELL referred to as a Yeoman of Fordington pleaded guilty at the Bridport Sessions to a charge of Assault on Jane LEGG , who appeared to testify, and was supported by a witness William TERRELL. Lot was fined 6d [Quarter Session Plea Books 1793-1810 Images 112 and 114]

[On 10th Apr 1804 Jane LEGG of Forthington a single woman pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault upon Sarah the wife of Lot GARTELL and had to find surety for £20 and William TERRELL in £20 for her appearance at the next Sessions to try the issue. What is strange is the William TERRELL was a witness at Sarah's wedding to Lot Gartell. She faced a 2nd charge for assault on Ann the daughter of Lot GARTELL (who from the baptism register was 3 years old!) and again had to provide surety of £20 to appear at the next assizes. [QS Plea Books 1793-1810 Image 170 ] The charge against Sarah was discharged and Jane pleaded guilty to the charge of assault on Ann for which she was fined 6d.{Image 173]

The family then seem to have returned to live in London where it appears Sarah died as Lot Gartell remarried in 1807 described as a widower (see below). Ann also appears to have gone with them to London as she married at St Marys Lambeth on 13th July 1828 to a Mark Lamb.

[On 24th May 1807 the first of 3 banns of marriage (read on 24th and 31st May and 7th June 1807) were read at St Giles Cripplegate in the City of London (Image 29 of 397) between Lot GARTELL a widower and Elizth OFFICE a widow - I have not located the marriage but there is a CLDS index entry for 14th June 1807 which seem likely to be correct. ]

[On 12th Mar 1808 there is a baptism in the City of London, Saint Giles Cripplegate with entries in the following order :-[ "Childs Christian name: Sex: fathers Christian and Surname: His trade: His wife's Christian name: Date Born: Date Baptised "] The entry is :- " James S [son] Lot GARTELL Vict [victualler] & Elizth [Elizabeth] March 12th" The baptism is on an inner magin between the pages and not opened properly but looks like 24th. same day as the next entry. I cannot be absolutely sure this is the same family but his name is so unusual and his wife being Elizabeth make it highly likely. His occupation is different however.

The Overseers of the Poor Accounts for Fordington (image 657 on ancestry.com) for January 1805 record having paid for "Susannah LUCKES 'Laying In and a Midwife £1. 0s. 0d '-- ALSO (image 670) for the period 3rd Nov to 1st Dec 1805 " Paid Expenses in taking up and marrying of Jacob BEAVES £8. 16s. 0d.

At the Quarter Sessions held at Sherborne on 26th April 1808 (image 83 on ancestry.com ) an appeal was heard from Stanton St Gabriels Parish against an order for the removal of Susan the wife of Jacob BEVIS [BEAVIS] a private soldier in His Majestys Fifty Third Regiment of Foot and John their son aged about 7 months out of and from the Parish of Fordington to Stanton St Gabriel. The original order was quashed so the Overseers for Fordington became liable to support Susan and her child and recover costs from Jacob's Militia Pay. I have not located any military records relating to him but it is possible that for a time the Militia was at Bridport as Susannah gave birth to their 2nd son William at Whitchurch Canonicorum in 1810.

Land Tax returns for the years 1816 to 1826 inclusive survive which show that Jacob BEAVIS was occupying a House and Garden in Mill Street in Fordington owned by Thomas LISTER on which a tax of £3.10s pa. The witness William LUKES was the 2nd husband of Elizabeth FUDGE nee NOTLEY wife of William FUDGE (1763- 1797) whom she had married at Winterborne Monkton on 23 May 1784. Children from this marriage were:-

    (1) Mary Ann Fudge (1809 - aft 1829) bap FStG 18th Mar 1809; Probably the Mary Ann Fudge that gave birth to an illegitimate daughter Emma Anne FUDGE who was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 22nd Mar 1829. Mary's abode was given as Pease Lane in Holy Trinity and it looks like she had been working there for some time and gained settlement in the parish but returned to her mother in Fordington to give birth (as was traditional for a first child) as a removal order was granted on 1st Nov 1828 from Fordington to Holy Trinity as she was then pregnant. The reputed father was David Davis a domestic servant of John Dansey Esq of Blandford and it would have been Holy Trinity's Overseers to pursue him for her lying in costs and support for the child.

    (2) Maria Fudge (1811 - ?) bap FStG 5th Apr 1811;She married at FStG on 6th February 1831 to Joseph STROUD

    (4) Richard Fudge (1815 - ?) bap FStG 11th Feb 1815

    (5) Edward Fudge (1817-1893) born on 10th August 1817 he was baptised at St Georges Church in Fordington Dorset on 7th Sep 1817. He joined the Police Force as a Constable in December 1838 but after 18 years service suffered a dislocated ankle whilst living at Hooley, Coulsdon in Surrey and was found unfit for service. The 1851 Census confirms that he was born in Fordington and was married to Elizabeth who in 1851 said she had been born in Eling Hampshire circa 1815. He was discharged on 9th June 1856 and entitled to a Pension of £28 pa which he intended to draw at Southampton. His Discharge record is available to view on Ancestry.com and confirms he was born in Dorset on 10th Aug 1817 the son of James and Mary Fudge. By 1861 He and his wife were back living in Dorchester running the 'Antelope Tap' in Princess St. Some time before the next census however they moved back to Hampshire living in Millbrook. Edward Fudge died on 29th May 1893 at Portland Cottage 39 Waterloo Road Freemantle Milbrook Hants. Probate was granted over his estate of £979 to his widow Elizabeth. died during the 2nd qtr 1893 aged 75.
