Note:- Some entries are not in date order often because the churchwarden had to get details of baptisms from other officiating ministers who had stood in for the vicar - they are shown in the numbered order given in the Bishops Transcripts - In this return the word "infant" seems to have been used for children under the age of 1" - Transcribers comments in [italics in brackets]. Some returns are missing from the Bishops Transcripts as indicated, but entries are complete having been taken from the original parish records

Image 960 on ancestry.com shows accounts for 16th April 1819 and that the Overseers for the Poor in Fordington had paid the Widow MUTFORD to look after George BURTS wife who was clearly sick. She was paid a shilling for each of the weeks 16th; 23rd and 30th of April 1819. Later payments suggest this mainly consisted of doing the households washing. In the week commencing 30th April Sarah BURT clearly died as costs include (image 960 right hand page) "For laying out George BURT's wife= 1 shilling; Barrers [bearers] = 2 shillings;Making a shroud= 1 shilling; For the Cloth [to cover the coffin] = 1 shilling 6 pence; Coffin= 14 shillings; shroud 7 shillings 6 pence; Clark and Saxton [Clerc as in Cleric and Sexton] = 2 shillings and 2 pence : Total Cost £1-9-6d . After Sarah's burial Widow MUTFORD continued to look after George BURT's Family and was still being paid 1s. a week 31st March 1820 when she is referred to as "Molly MUTFORD for washing G.BURT" [i.e. his family washing image 989]. On 23rd June there are 2 separate entries of 2s and 4s and an entry for "Mrs HISCOCK being paid another 5s. for laying Mary MOOR". 'Laying out' is a phrase often used after someone has died when widows or married women were paid to strip and wash the body and lay them out in the coffin in their shroud. Here I think it simply means she was washed and probably dressed in a clean shift. As she is sick and there is a risk, payments were higher eg 5 shillings. In the same account the Overseers also paid 10s. 9d for a blanket for her and continued to pay 3 shillings for her to be looked after each week. On 14th July 1820 however there are entries for "Coffin and shroud for M Moore's child 8s.0d. paid Mary Moors 3s.0d and further down paid for Bell & Saxton for M.MOOR's child 2s.2d (i.e. for the church Bells to be rung at the funeral and the Sexton to dig the grave. Mary wife of John BARTLETT; 260; All Saints Dorchester; 01 Apr 1821; 76 Years; John Palmer Vicar [Note:-Thought to actually be the widow of John BARTLETT (1742-1798) whom she married in 1769 and raised a family of 6 children in St Peters Parish where he ran a business as a baker. When her husband died in 1798 I think she lived with her eldest son James & his wife Mary. They had married the year before her husband died and were already living in All Saints Parish and raised a faily there 1798-1804. In later years I think she was with her 2nd son John and his wife Ann (who married in 1798) and lived in Fordington from their marriage until his death in 1836].

They also paid 2 shillings for pall-bearers and another shilling for making the shroud. They also paid 2 shilling and 2 pence the charge for digging the grave and ringing the church bells.

Charles Richard son of Samuel & Rachel? TAYLOR ; Entry 568; F; 04 Aug 1828; age 11 months ; John Palmer Vicar

[Note:- Baptism of Charles Richard Taylor was on 20th Aug 1827 at St Georges Church Fordington but his parents are given as Samuel & Virtue? TAYLOR - I have rechecked both baptism & burial images and this is not a transcription error. Samuel Taylor from Fordington married Virtue Paul in West Stafford Dorset on 7th July 1823. They appear to have settled in Fordington having 5 children there Charles Richard (1827); Sophia (1829); Philip (1831); Abram (1833) and Virtue (1835) before his wife Virtue Taylor appears to have died at the age of 37 being buried there 3rd Oct 1838. There is no trace of a Rachel being married to a Samuel Taylor or having other children here so I assume the vicar got her name wrong on the burial record]
