Their Banns of Marriage were read on 5th; 12th and 19th Nov 1854 between EDWARD John SCOTT and Eliza COX in line with the above marriage but he appears to have used either Edward or Edwin regularly as his Christian name. As stated at his marriage he worked as a bricklayer until 1857 when he became a porter working for the Great Western Railway, a job he retained until about 1866 when he became a general labourer. In the April 1861 Census, now recorded as EDWIN John SCOTT , he and Eliza are living with their first 3 children at Millers Close in Fordington. By 1871, Still recorded as Edwin J Scott, they have moved to live in Pease Lane in Holy Trinity Parish in Dorchester and by 1881 in Grove Buildings in West Fordington. Edwin John SCOTT Senior was buried at St Georges church in Fordington (Christchurch had no burial ground) on 15th June 1881. After his death Eliza SCOTT nee COX (1839- ? ) moved the family to Louds Road in Fordington and took in Laundry. By 1901 she was living with her married daughter Eliza Jane and 2 of her sons. Still with them in1911 aged 71. (9) Albert SCOTT (1874-1947) Born on 9th Jan 1874 he was baptised at Christchurch in West Fordington on 3rd Apr 1874 recorded as the son of Edwin and Eliza Scott. He enlisted into the Dorset Regt at Dorchester on 11th Aug 1890 as (Soldier 3091) . He was aged 18 and served in Egypt and India as well as during the Boer War in South Africa where he attained the rank of Corporal in 1902. He was awarded Queen Victoria's South African Medal 1899-1902 with 5 clasps as well as King Edward VII South Africa Medal with two clasps. He was discharged on 17th Sep 1902. He returned to Fordington and married at St George's church on 23rd June 1903 to Agnes Bessie SOPER (1873-1945) a 30 year old spinster the daughter of Thomas SOPER a Grocer. They had 3 children Hilda Mary born 3rd Sep 1905: Albert Leonard born 29th Nov 1908 : and Cyril Victor born 30th March 1914. At the outbreak of the 1st World War aged 40 he re-enlisted on 17th April 1914 serving a further 3 years and attaining the rank of Sergeant until he was transferred to the reserves 30th April 1919. Albert and Agnes are in the Sep 29th 1939 2nd World War Census living at 15 Alexander Road in Dorchester. Agnes Bessie Scott died at the agde of 72 and was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 14th April 1945. Albert appears to have died at Chelsea in London in the 4th qtr of 1947 probably as a Chelsea Pensioner. After marriage here in 1860 William and Rhoda lived at 29 Grove Buildings (1860-1880) before moving to Church Street (1881-4) and 12 High East St (1885-1900) in All Saints Parish Dorchester. After giving birth to 10 children Rhoda died at the relatively young age of 41 and was buried at the civic cemetery in Dorchester on 12th Dec 1881. William Henry CROCKER died at 12 High East Street on 2nd April 1900 leaving an estate of just over £1,277 to be administered by his son Charles Crocker a butcher. In 1901 he was living at 43 High West Street. He was granted administration of his fathers estate in June 1900. He died at the age of 65 and was buried at the civic cemetery 25th Aug 1933. (6) William Henry Crocker (1869-1931) bap Christchurch 30th May 1869, he married St Peters church Dorchester to Ida Louisa Wilmott on 1st Aug 1892. 1889-1902 he was the Innkeeper of White Horse Inn 33 Colliton St then lived at 10 Orchard St 1904-9. He died at the age of 62 and was buried at the Civic Cemetery in Dorchester on 12th May 1931. (7) Eliza Crocker (1871-aft.1891) bap Christchurch 30th Apr 1871 ;in the 1891 Census with her widowed father and siblings aged 20 unmarried a housekeeper (her mother having died in 1881); (8) Harry Crocker (1873-1900) bap at All Saints Church Dorchester 28th Apr 1873 and for some reason re-baptised there on 19 Sep 1875 with their next child. He joined the Dorset Imperial Volunteer field force and was killed during the Boer war. He died in Pretoria Hospital Transvaal South Africa on 14th Oct 1900. Mary Ann RANDALL was the 16 year old daughter of John RANDALL a stone mason by trade. After their marriage they lived at 10 Grove Buildings in West Fordington and appear in the 1861 Census living there there, Charles working as a journeyman cordwainer and Mary Ann a dressmaker. Annie their first child was baptised at Holy Trinity but their 2nd child Samuel Charles was baptised at Christchurch in West Fordington. Charles Ernest LAKE with his wife Mary Ann and two children Annie and Samuel Charles then obtained an assisted passage to Queensland in Australia and all arrived in Brisbane aboard 'The Queen of the Colonies' a fully rigged ship of 1,346 tons. It had sailed from the East India Dock in London on 7th July 1865 and arrived at Brisbaine in Australia on 7th Oct 1865. Mary Ann, who had been pregnant thoughout this voyage gave birth to their thrid child Sarah Ann on the 28th Oct 1865. An account of this voyage was written by one of the 1st class cabin passengers Mr H.H.C.Hurle. ALink to a further account of the voyage with a full passenger listing. They raised a family of 14 children before Charles Ernest Lake died on 10th Feb 1895 at Kilkivan, Queensland followed by Mary Ann on 16th Dec 1909 . The following year on 23rd July 1887 he won first prizes in a competition offered by a publication called "Ally Sloper's Half Holiday" to its readers. 1st prize of £10 with a second class return ticket was published as going "To JAMES VINCENT, Town Crier and Army Boot Maker of Dorchester, age 40 years; married; family of thirteen ; wishes to go to Weymouth as soon as possible". In Kellys Street Directory for the year 1889 he is listed as an officer of the Corporation and Urban Sanitary Authority and Town Crier for Dorchester. Kelly's Directory for 1895 confirms they had moved to live at 41 Glyde Path Road in St Peters Parish. James is shown in the above picture taken in 1900 standing next to the mace bearer on the right. James died on 29th May 1910 described at Probate as resident at No.7 Northernhay Dorchester a bootmaker and Town Crier. He left a modest estate of £29.15s 1d to his widow Emily VINCENT nee CARTER (1845-1914) . James was buried at the Civic Cemetery on 1st June 1910. After James death Emily continued to live at 7 Northernhay with her 2 youngest children Benjamin and Randolph. She died aged 69 being buried at the Civic Cemetery on 30th Dec 1914 Children:- (1) James Walter VINCENT (1868-1958?) was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 31st May 1868 He followed his fathers trade to become a shoemaker and lived with his parents at Pease Lane Dorchester until on 11th Sep 1885 aged 18 he enlisted into the 39th Dorset Regiment as Soldier 2147. He married on 23rd Dec 1890 aged 22 to Elizabeth Ann KEECH the 20 year old daughter of George Keech a labourer when he gave his trade as that of a shoemaker.They were living in Holy Trinity Parish at Glydepath Hill in Dorchester in 1891. By the following year they had moved to Somerset where they had 5 children before briefly returning to Abbotsbury where a sixth was born in 1900. By 1901 they had moved again to live in Glamorgam South Wales where a further 7children were born including the 5 listed on his WWI enlistment record [Follow above links for more information]. Elizabeth Ann died in the 3rd qtr of 1916 and James Walter re-enlisted into the Royal Engineers on 1st June 1917: Regimental Number 296372: He was discharged on 4th July 1918. The only death located is for a Jame Walter VINCENT of 24 Kerrison Road Battersea who according to probate records died on 10th March 1958 at St Johns Hospital in Battersea leaving an estate of £1271. 7s. 6d. in the hands of a Solicitor Frederick William Pope and an Insurance official Edward Whitmore. The appropriate GRO Death is in the 1st qtr of 1958 and gives his age as 92? (2) Charles Vincent (1869-1944) Born on the 4th Sep 1869 he was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 31st Oct 1869: He followed his father's trade of Shoemaker living with his parents until after 1881 but has not been located in 1891. He married however at The Parish Church in Hendford Somerset aged 24 on 30th May 1892 to Elizabeth NUTLAND the 27 year old spinster daughter of Thomas NUTLAND a packer. Follow link for more information and picture of his family] (3) Louisa May Vincent (1871-1920) Bap HT Church 2nd Apr 1871: She married on 21st July 1896 aged 25 to a chemist William SHARPE GILL (1868-1914) the son of Hugh GILL, also a Chemist, at St Peters Church in Liverpool by whom she had 2 children in Hampstead in London. On 9th Sep 1918 she joined the Air Womans Service (Service No. 15808) records are at the National Archives in Kew AIR/80/87/58. She died on 13th Jan 1920 at 82 Colney Hatch Lane Muswell Hill Middlesex leaving an estate of £3,385 and was buried at Camden on 17th. (4) William Vincent (1872- aft 1939) Born on the 26th Aug 1872 he was baptised at Holy Trinity Church in Dorchester on 29th Sep 1872 and aged 8 was living with his parents at Pease Lane in Dorchester in 1881: As a young boy of only 14 years he enlisted into the Royal Horse Artillery at Fordington Barracks on 5th Oct 1887 [Soldier No. 61796] By 1891 he was a Gunner Driver in the Royal Artillery Barracks based at Woolwich Arsenal, but he suffered from deafness and was discharged at Woolwich on 31st Aug 1895. He then appears to have had a civil marriage to Rose HARDING in the district of Camberwell London during the 3rd qtr 1895. They had 8 children between 1895 and 1913. (5) Kate Vincent (1873-1949) Born on 14th Aug 1873 she was baptised at HT Church in Dorchester on 25 Dec 1874 : Aged 16 she was already working as a Domestic Servant in Croydon to James Thomas Stayner and his familey. James Stayner was actually born in Holy Trinity Parish in Dorchester and was by 1891 a Clerk in the Magistrates Office in Croydon. By 1901 she was the Housekeeper for John Louis CANTELO (18531918) a mechanitian who made writing apparatus for the blind and living in Toxteth Park Lancashire. They married in Lancashire the 3rd qtr of 1909. Kate Cantelo died at the age of 76 during the last qtr of 1949 in the district of Reading Berkshire. (6) Emily Vincent (1876-1957) Bap HT Church 4th June 1876 : she remained with the family and aged 14 was already employed locally as a nursemaid. She married a steam roller driver John Benjamin MITCHELL and they were living at 4 Terrace St in Weymouth in 1911. She died in the Herrison Hospital and was buried at Charminster on 13th Feb 1957 aged 80. (7) Mabel Vincent (1877-1943) Born on 1st Feb 1877 she was baptised at HT Church in Dorchester on 16th Nov 1877 : she remained with the family and aged 13 was already employed locally as a nursemaid. By 1901 aged 21 she had moved to live in Willesden Middlesex still working as a Domestic Servant.She married Sidney William Hughes PEARCE (1878-1939) a native of Saltash in Cornwall at the Wesleyan Chapel in Bournemouth and they had a son Sidney Herbert Pearce (1913-2004). In 1939 they were living at 52 Richmond Road Poole. Mabel died during 3rd qtr 1943 in the district of Poole Dorset. (8) Nellie Vincent (1878-1943) Born on 12th Feb 1878 she was baptised at HT Church in Dorchester on 21st Apr 1878: she remained with the family and married at the Registry Offoce in Dorchester to William Edward CURTIS (1876-1941) on 4th Jan 1897 described in the Western Gazette on the 8th Jan as both being of Middle Farm in Fordington. In 1900 they were living at Cattistock but by 1901 they had moved to Northfield Cottages in Chilfrome, William working as a carter which meant they followed his work. They had been in Mintern Magna, Dorchester and Powerstock by 1911. They had 7 children and Nellie died aged 65 being buried at Bradford-Abbas on 22nd May 1943 (CLDS Film 002427624). (9) Fanny Vincent (1879-1942) Born on 7th Aug 1879 she was baptised at HT Church on 14th Nov 1879 and was living with her parents in 1891. I have not been able to locate her in 1901. She appears to have had a civil marriage to a butler called Lansley William Charles STEER (1876-1943) a native of Brighton in Sussex on 27th Jan 1906 at Westminster in London. They had 3 girls before 1911 and were living at 11 Rossetti Buildings, Millbank Westminster from at least 1909 as they appear in the Electoral Register. By 1919 they are living at 36 Turner Buildings but still in Millbank. They were still there when the War Census was taken on 29th Sep 1939 with their youngest daughter Hilda. Fanny died aged 63 during 4th qtr 1942 in Surrey. (10) Robert Vincent (1880-1882) GRO Birth 4th qtr 1880 5a/314) 1881C age 5 months, he was buried at the Civic cemetery in Dorchester on 16th May 1882 aged 1 year - recorded as son of James Vincent Shoemaker (11) Bertie Vincent (1882-1931) Born on 27th May 1882 and baptised at HT Church in Dorchester on 21st June 1882: He initially worked as a waiter but enlisted into the Royal Navy [ADM 188/543. No.358222 and WWI - Y20559] on 1st April 1900 as a Rating 3rd Class.and was described as being 5'4" tall with light brown hair blue eyes and fair complexion. . In March 1901 he was resident at the Royal Navy's training twin screw battleship HMS Collingwood. He transferred to HMS Melampus on 24th March 1902 and promoted to 2nd Class on 1st April. He returned to Collingwood for a year on 1st June 1902. On 25th June 1903 he was posted to HMS Hood for a week before taking up post on HMS Aelous an apollo class cruiser on 1st July 1903 until 8th Feb 1904. After leaving the Navy he married to Susan Lilian LANGRIDGE (1877-1926) in East Grinstead Sussex during the 1st qtr 1908. In 1911 he was working as a hotel waiter and living at 39 Morland Buildings on the Millbank Estate. in Westminster. They are said to have had 3 girls by 1912. He re-enlisted into the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve on 8th Aug 1916. (12) Arthur Vincent (1884-1885) Bap HT Church 7th July 1884; his death is recorded at the GRO during 1st qtr 1885 aged 1 year Dorchester district Ref 5a/272 but we have not located a burial which should have been at the civic cemetery. (13) Benjamin Disraeli Vincent (1886-1944) Born on the 16th April 1886 Most records simply refer to him as Benjamin or Benjamin D Vincent. Unusually I have not been able to locate a baptism for him. He became a newspaper compositor and was living with his widowed mother in 1911 at 7 Northernhay where his mother died in 1914. An article in the Western Gazette on 3rd March 1916 states that he was rejected for the Army as he was stone deaf. He was still living at Northernhay in 1917 but had moved to live at 2 Old Cottages on the Richmond Road in Poole by 1918. He married Beatrice M DAVIES (1885-1946) during 2nd qtr 1935 at the General Registry Office in Southport Bournemouth.In the 29th Sep 1939 War Census they were resident at 44 Limes Ave Aylesbury Buckinghamshire. Benjamins death is rceorded there at the GRO at the age of 59 during 1st qtr 1944. (14) Randolph Vincent (1887-1958) Born on the 2nd Nov 1887 and baptised at HT Church Dorchester on 2nd Dec 1887. He was employed as a shop assistant as young boy and enlisted into the Royal Navy on 15th April 1906 [Seaman 364666] assigned to HMS Roxburgh and of good character but was discherged to shore as unfit for situation on 16th Oct 1906. He worked for the town council employed as Dorchesters Town Crier (as his father had before him). In the 1911 Census he is unmarried aged 23 living with his widowed mother Emily and his elder brother Benjamin. On 25th Oct 1913 a Bastardy Order was issued against him in respect of the illegitimate child (Flossie) of Eleanor Eliza THORNE by the Cerne Abbas Union Workhouse. This resulted in a number of articles in the Western Gazette concerning non payment of maintenance and even prison in Dorchester Gaol during 1913 and 1914. On the 8th March 1915 Randolph re-enlisted into the Royal Navy as a stoker 2nd class. After training he was promoted to Stoker 1st class on 8th May 1915. He was then posted to HMS Grafton in 1st July 1915. Unfortunately he was severly wounded in action in the Dardanelles on 12th August 1915. He was hit by a shell resulting in the amputation of his left foot and was hospitalised at Malta on 17th August 1915. He is in the electoral Register for Westminster for 1915 as a resident at 98 Titchfield Street. He married on 27th Feb 1918 at St Philips church Camberwell to Edith LAWRENCE (1883-1964) a 34 year old spinster daughter of the late Richard Lawrence a builder by trade when their residence was given as 112 Avondale Sq. In the 29th September 1939 war Census Edith's entry states which was originally shown as married has later been changed to seperated. Randolph entry has not been located. Randolph and Edith had a son Jack Harold Vincent (1928-2003) . Randolph continued to move around London and by 1947 was in the Salvation Army Hostel at 18 Great Peter St Westminster. Prior to this marriage John BARTLETT (1824-1906) had married his 1st wife Ann BRINSON (1821-1875) at Beaminster on 31st May 1849. In the 1851 Census they are living at Mosterton in Dorset John aged 28 described as a bread maker born Beaminster; Ann aged 25 also born Beaminster with their 1st child Alfred aged 10 months born at Mosterton. By the December that year they have returned to live in Beaminster the 1861 Census showing John (aged 36) and Ann (aged 38) with their children Alfred aged 10, Fanny aged 9, and William aged 7. By 1871 his parents seem to have separated with William staying with his mother and sibling Alfred living in Charminster. (The boys names have been transposed by the enumerator as Alfred is the elder sibling aged 20 and William aged 17); John BARTLETT (1824-1906) however is in the 1871 Census living at Rampisham in Dorset with his father John BARTLETT (1798-1879) then aged 75 a Dairyman born at Odcombe in Somerset and his step-mother Martha BARTLETTnee VINCENT aged 62 born at Netherbury in Dorset. John BARTLETT (1824-1906) was then described as being married, (no wife present) aged 46 years, a Journeyman Miller born at Beaminster. Also living with them (and a servant and her 2 children) is their grandson George (Brinson) BARTLETT aged 9 years born at Beaminsteraged 62 born at Netherbury. John is aged 46 and described as a Miller Journeyman. (1) William John Grant born on 21 May 1877 he was bap Christchurch WF 02 Jun 1878. A bricklayer by trade he enlisted at Portsmouth on 13th Sep 1898 as a stoker 2nd class Service No. 290035 for 12 years and after training joined the flagship HMS Duke of Wellington on 1st April 1899 at Portsmouth. Apart from a short period (13 Oct 1899-30 Nov 1899) on the Battleship HMS Rodney he continued on the Duke of Wellington promoted to stoker 1st class until posted to HMS Naiad 19th Mar 1902. Based in the Indian Sea she was involved in the military operations in Somaliland 1902-1904 her crew receiving 285 medals and clasps for the campaign. According to his service record he returned to Portsmouth and was posted to HMS Firequeen II 3rd Aug 1904 which was a small Steam Yacht acting as a tender to HMS Duke of Wellington. This posting enabled him to get married. On the 23rd of August 1904 in her parish of Hook in Dorset he married Frances Mary a spinster and daughter of Thomas FOX. He served on many famous ships and re-enlisted on 17th Dec 1910 to complete his service to qualify for a pension but died on HMS Gilia on 19th March 1919 being buried on shore at RN Cemetery Capuccini on Malta. His widow Frances was then living at 17 Love Lane Rodwell Weymouth.
