[Note:- Edwin (alias Edward) SCOTT (1831 - 1881) He was baptised at All Saints Church in the parish of Leigh in Wiltshire on Christmas day 1831 recorded as EDWIN John the son of Edward and Sarah SCOTT. As far as I can tell his father died when he was young leaving his mother Sarah a widdow with 4 children to support. By June 1841 she was working as a woollen spinner in the tything of Holt in the parish of Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire . With her are her children and her younger son Edwin is already recorded as EDWARD Scott aged 9. In March 1851 (the first detailed Census) shows Edward now 19 has obtained employment in Bath working as a servant. Census forms were dsitributed to the head of the household a couple of days before Census night and the completed forms were collected the next day.  Edward alias Edwin had been living in Holt for more than a decade so he probably had little or no memory of where he was actuyally born so I am not suprised to find Holt given as his birth place.

Their Banns of Marriage were read on 5th; 12th and 19th Nov 1854 between EDWARD John SCOTT and Eliza COX in line with the above marriage but he appears to have used either Edward or Edwin regularly as his Christian name. As stated at his marriage he worked as a bricklayer until 1857 when he became a porter working for the Great Western Railway, a job he retained until about 1866 when he became a general labourer. In the April 1861 Census, now recorded as EDWIN John SCOTT , he and Eliza are living with their first 3 children at Millers Close in Fordington. By 1871, Still recorded as Edwin J Scott, they have moved to live in Pease Lane in Holy Trinity Parish in Dorchester and by 1881 in Grove Buildings in West Fordington.

Edwin John SCOTT Senior was buried at St Georges church in Fordington (Christchurch had no burial ground) on 15th June 1881. After his death Eliza SCOTT nee COX (1839- ? ) moved the family to Louds Road in Fordington and took in Laundry. By 1901 she was living with her married daughter Eliza Jane and 2 of her sons. [Note:-Frank VOLLER (1864-1895) was the son of James VOLLER a carman by trade by his wife Emma and baptised at Rogate in Sussex on 3rd July 1864. He grew up initially on Bulls Farm at Liss in Hampshire before his family moved to Chantry Lane Cottage in Storrington in Sussex where he was working at the age of 16 as a farm labourer in 1881. He joined the Royal Navy and was serving on HMS Minotaur (picture left) at the time of his marriage to Annie. Annie according to the GRO was born in the 3rd quarter of 1869 and baptised at Maiden Newton in Dorset on 29th Aug 1869.She was therefore actually 16 not 19 when she married. As a young girl she lived for a time with her older married sister in Godmanstone.

In 1891 he was on board the newly commissioned "HMS Ringarooma" which was being fitted out for foreign service at Devenport. They sailed for Australia, Frank serving as a leading stoker, and arrived at Sydney on 5th Sep 1891. The picture left shows the crew of the Ringamoora whilst anchored at Bribane in Australia in 1894 but I have no idea whether he is featured. He must have returned to England as he died at the young age of 31 being buried at Alverstoke.

Annie returned to Dorset and in 1901 she was living with her parents Lot and Emma GREEN at 42 Dukes Avenue in All Saints Parish in Dorchester, correctly now recorded as a widow and working as a monthly nurse. She remarried in 1903 to Harry Foster GROVES a carpenter and was living with him at Moreton Station in 1911]
